WW1 11th Bn Royal Fusiliers, 17th Bn Manchester Pals Regiment MC, DCM, group of five medals. Awarded to Captain Fred Ruddy, who won the Distinguished Conduct Medal, with the 11th Bn Royal Fusiliers on the Somme 1916 and after been commissioned into the Manchester Regiment was awarded the Military Cross, whilst serving with the 17th (2nd City Pals) Battalion. Comprising: Military Cross, Distinguished Conduct Medal, 2058 L.CPL F. RUDDY 11/R. FUS, British War Medal, Victory Medal CAPT, Defence Medal. Medals mounted for display ... The group is accompanied by a miniature medal group of the first four medals... Original postcard photograph of a group of Manchester, with Capt Ruddy ... Selection of newspaper cuttings ref the award of the DCM ... Also a large quantity of detailed research. Citation for the MC appeared in the London Gazette on the 16th September 1918. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty, while commanding a Company during a hostile attack. He formed a defensive flank and when the enemy broke through and both flanks were in the air, he held on and inflicted severe loss on them, before withdrawing in good order. He then took up a new position, collected stragglers from other units and maintained his position, in spite of heavy barrages and strong attacks, for two days, when he was relieved. Citation for the Distinguished Conduct Medal appeared the London Gazette on the 25th November 1916 For conspicuous gallantry in action. He found the central enemy telephone dug out attacking it and capturing 15 prisoners. Later he held the post for twelve hours under intense fire. Captain Fred Ruddy was born in 1895 and at the outbreak of the Great War was clerk for the United Counties Bank in Liverpool, the newspaper cutting indicate that he originally joined the 26th Bankers Bn Royal Fusiliers in February 1916. before landing in France and joining the 11th Bn. The cuttings also indicate that the DCM action was at Thiepval. He received a commission into the Manchester Regiment in September 1917 and returned to France to serve with the regiment. Promoted to Captain, he was given command of a Trench Mortar Battery. He resigned his commission in 1919 and entered the cotton industry. A keen fly fisherman, he was appointed Captain of the English Fly Fishing Team
