STATUETTE DE VAJRAKILA EN LAITONTIBET, XVIE SIÈCLEHimalayan Art Resources item no. 4636 15.5 cm (6 1/8 in.) highFootnotes:A BRASS FIGURE OF VAJRAKILATIBET, 16TH CENTURY西藏 十六世紀 普巴金剛銅像Provenance:With Claude de Marteau, Brussels, by 1970sDepicted with three heads, six arms, and embracing his consort is Vajrakila, the embodiment of the same three-sided dagger (phurba) he holds in his principal pair of hands. Draping above his shoulders is a conflation of flayed human and elephant skin, with each of their faces projecting on opposite sides. In this fierce portrayal, Vajrakila destroys all obstacles with resounding force. The alloy and casting quality is typically associated with the Tsang province production of Central Tibet of the 15th and 16th century. Close comparison of the distinctive yellow and green tint of the alloy can be seen in a Mahakala from the Claude de Marteau Collection (Bonhams, Paris, 14 June, 2022, lot 66) and a folk-like representation of Vajrapani in the Essen Collection (HAR 3314731). Also compare with another Vajrakila with the same squat proportions (HAR 31949) and a Virupa attributed to the Tsang province with a single row of broad lotus petals similar to the present lot, sold at Bonhams, New York, 13 March 2017, lot 3086.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Art Deco Eagle" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 55c Art Deco Eagle Mail Box stamp issued February 22, 2001. America's beloved national emblem, the eagle has appeared as a featured decorative ornament in American folk art almost since the birth of the nation. This popular symbol is seen on such diverse items as wallpaper, musical instruments, pottery, glassware, china, cookie jars, playing cards, canes, bookends, posters, picture frames, whiskey bottles, ship figureheads and flags. During the Revolutionary War, General George Washington chose the eagle as the motif for the buttons on his uniform. In 1782, it became the central figure of America's Great Seal and, in 1789 when Washington was inaugurated the first President of the United States in New York City, he proudly stood beneath a magnificent eagle that adorned the pediment of Federal Hall. The eagle first appeared on American coinage when New Jersey issued a copper coin in 1786. Silver dollars, half dollars and dimes displaying the eagle entered circulation in 1794. The nation's first gold coins were minted in 1795, and were known as eagles and half eagles -- ten and five dollar pieces respectively. Many 19th century American coins featured an eagle in flight or perched upon a branch or rock. Other designs portrayed the eagle in a heraldic pose with a ribbon or banner held in its beak. Eagles are also a popular design for weather vanes made from sheet copper, brass or tin. Eagles were featured motifs in fabrics, beautifully stitched into quilts, draperies and rugs -- often elaborately ornamented with stars, flowers, sun rays, trees and houses. Image Size: 13.5 x 11.5 in. Overall Size: 20 x 14.5 in. Unframed. (B16900)
A LARGE BRONZE DANCER'S HEADPIECE IN THE FORM OF A PANJURLI BHUTA (BOAR SPIRIT DEITY)South India, Kerala or Karnataka, 18th century. The mask finely cast in openwork to depict the head of a boar spirit with large pierced almond-shaped eyes, neatly incised arched brows, the mouth agape revealing teeth and tongue, the long pierced snout and lips detailed with beaded decorations, the head surmounted by an intricately cast crown; topped by six cobras above beaded and floral decorations as well as a row of numerous smaller snakes. Provenance: German trade.Condition: Good condition with old wear and some casting irregularities. Losses, nicks and dents, a bit of verdigris here and there, particularly to back and interior. Naturally grown patina overall.Weight: 5,475 g (excl. stand)Dimensions: Height 48 cm (excl. stand)This dramatic dancer's headpiece in the form of a boar's head was created in the southwestern coastal region of Tulu Nadu (in the modern Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts of Karnataka state and Kasaragod district of Kerala state), for ritual use in dance festivals propitiating and honoring the local tutelary spirit deities (bhuta). Hundreds of these elaborate community celebrations, called Dharmanema festivals, are held every year between February and May to venerate the regional pantheon of over 350 spirit deities. The boar spirit deity (Panjurli), one of the most powerful and important Genii Loci, is said to be borne of the forest and is thus particularly revered in this lush tropical region. He is also responsible for upholding righteousness through his identification as a manifestation of Vishnu, the supreme Hindu god of preservation and social order. This religious correlation is expressed by Panjurli's visual similarity to Varaha, the boar-headed avatar of Vishnu. Dancers' headpieces and masks are fashioned in a wide variety of iconographic forms and local artistic styles. They are typically quite large in size, and made in one of three primary media: wood, papier-mâche, and bronze. This headpiece is a tour de force of the genre because of its superb artistic quality, pronounced facial modeling, and complex ornamentation. With a modern stand. (2)Literature comparison: Compare a closely related copper alloy dancer's headpiece in the form of Panjurli Bhuta, 43.5 cm high, in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, accession number M.2005.49a-b.
