AN INTERESTING FRENCH TOLE PEINTE BESPOKE MILLINER'S TRADE OR SHOP SIGN EARLY 19TH CENTURY In the form of a red painted and gilded bicorne hat as worn by Napoleon Bonaparte, modern stand hat 25cm high, 64cm wide, 27cm deep In 1732 Dean Jonathan Swift wrote of Dublin's shop signs 'I have not observed the wit and fancy of this town so much employed in any one Article as that of contriving a variety of signs to hang over houses where punch is served'. Before the general spread of literacy and standardised postal addresses brightly painted signs hung outside shops and businesses to advertise the services or goods within. Shop signs are one of the most long established forms of European folk art. The golden age of trade signs was from the late 17th century to the early 19th century. In the late 18th century, many large cities placed prohibitions on the installation of street furniture as streets became more crowded and inhospitable. This, together with the rise of literacy and the spreading of the use of plate glass allowing for elaborate window displays, put an end to this particular form of street art. * RAMSAY GILLIES, THE FISHERMAN copper/sheet metal rotating sculpture of a fisherman/angler raised on a wooden base, initialled "RG" to base52cm high x 61cm longNote: Ramsay Gillies was born and raised in Edinburgh and attended Edinburgh College of Art, studying Graphic Design, life drawing and sculpture. He spent his working years as a graphic designer in Scotland, Bermuda, New York, Boston, London, coming home to Edinburgh in the mid seventies. He returned to sculpture around five years ago with a simple resolve to avoid repetition and keep it quirky. He is inspired by the folk art tradition and every piece is unique, fashioned mainly in metal and wood with interesting finishes.

* WILLIAM ROBBIE (SCOTTISH 1887 - 1967), TWO CLYDESDALES, PETERHEAD watercolour on paper, signedmounted, framed and under glassimage size 40cm x 52cm, overall size 50cm x 62cm Note: William Robbie was one of thirteen children born to a farmworker and his wife in the Parish of Old Deer (Buchan, Aberdeenshire). He showed artistic promise from an early age, however modest earnings prevented the family from sending Robbie to art school, instead he flourished in the Buchan schools winning several prizes for his work. Clydesdale horses were of prime importance to arable farmers before the advent of the tractor and as such were worthy and prized subjects of the artist's talents. William Robbie focussed on horses and adopted folk art techniques, including using cigarette packet foil to highlight the horse brasses. His horse portraits have been sold by Christie's, Bonhams and in our auctions.

[No Reserve]Acquired on the UK art market before 2000. Property of an Essex, UK, gentleman.This amulet was believed to offer protection against 'Elfshot'. The attack of elves was believed responsible for mysterious suffering in men and livestock: sudden shooting pains localised to a particular area of the body, such as in rheumatism, arthritis or muscle stitches or cramps. Elves were thought to shoot darts or arrows where such pains had no obvious external cause. Belief in elfshot persisted into the 20th century in rural areas, and as proof country folk would sometimes find small arrowheads (the remains of Neolithic or Mesolithic flints, or naturally-occurring spear-shaped stones) that were believed to be the magical weapons that caused the afflictions. Belief in elfshot began in the Pagan Germanic period.

This Antique Organ Grinder and Monkey Cast Iron Mechanical Bank features a classic scene of a street performer and his trained monkey, a popular motif from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
