Lot 104

1998 Rover Mini Cooper Transmission: manualMileage:65588The Mini was manufactured by the British Motor Corporation (BMC) and its successors from 1959 until 2000. The original is considered a British icon of the 1960's and its space-saving front-wheel drive layout allowing 80% of the car's floorpan to be used for passengers and luggage, influenced a generation of car makers. In 1999, the Mini was voted the second most influential car of the 20th century behind the Ford Model T. Initially, Mini's were marketed under the Austin and Morris names until Mini became a marque in its own right in 1969. The Mini was again marketed under the Austin name in the 1980's and was offered in a number of limited editions, which usually included a special combination of trim and badging. This late production 1998 Cooper is presented in exceptional condition following a full body strip down and respray, interior retrim with new leather, leather dash top and door cards, new headlining and carpets, as well as a new walnut dash and door capping's. Other work on the exterior included stainless steel bumpers, new near-side front wing and door skins and new rubbers for the lights, windows and doors. The work continued beneath the surface too, both subframes were replaced and powder coated, a new S pack steering rack was fitted and the suspension and braking systems were overhauled. In total there are invoices for around £4,500 for the mechanical parts alone. The car comes with its original handbooks and various invoices and old MoT test certificates. This example is being offered without reserve and with all the work that has been done it can be enjoyed right away.

1968 Ford Mustang Fastback Transmission: automaticMileage:18133The Ford Mustang was the brainchild of Lee Iacocca and was branded as the first 'Pony Car', borne out of a need to compete with the flood of European sportscars coming into the USA in the sixties. The first production Mustang rolled off the assembly line in Dearborn, Michigan on 9th March 1964 and was introduced to the public at the New York World's Fair on 17th April 1964. Legendary Texan racing driver, Carroll Shelby had been campaigning Ford Mustangs with considerable success in America, winning the SCCA's production title three years running. Capitalising on his success, Shelby began manufacturing modified Mustangs, which were officially sanctioned by Ford and sold through selected dealerships. The first Shelby Mustang, the GT350, arrived in 1965 powered by a modified version of the Ford's 289ci, small block, V8 engine with a four-speed Borg Warner manual gearbox. This lovely 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback was import from Europe by a Swedish gentleman who had properties in both Sweden and the UK. Purchased by the current owner in 2021 and placed in his collection of American muscle cars, he only registered the car in the UK in June of this year. At some time, this Mustang has been gone through and up rated with a later 390GT big block V8 engine married to an automatic gearbox. Finished in silver with a burgundy interior, this very good Mustang Fastback is supplied with a V5C registration document, an MoT test certificate which expires in August 2024 and two sets of keys. This is a very useable Ford Mustang Fastback and is an ideal candidate for the possibility being rebuilt as a 'Eleanor' from the film 'Gone in 60 Seconds' or as a Steve McQueen 'Bullitt' recreation.

Lot 254

1961 Ford Zephyr 6 Mk. II Convertible Transmission: automaticMileage:75472The Zephyr was first displayed at the Earls Court Motor Show in 1950. The Mk. I Zephyr and Zodiac were the first British cars to use the MacPherson strut independent front suspension in mass production. The Mk. II Zephyr and Zodiacs had shared the same body as the new Zodiac and Zephyrs launched in 1962 but shared very few body panels thereafter. The Mk. II range was much more popular.  A useful modernisation of the original car, the Mk. II added fins and chrome to the equation as well as more interior room. Ford's advertising referred to them as the 'Three Graces', implying a feminine and graceful nature. There is no doubt that the performance of the Zephyr and the Zodiac Series II models was restricted by the rudimentary exhaust system, but with a well-known, Raymond Mays complete engine conversion, it boosted their performance figures. Autocar Magazine recorded a standing quarter mile of 17.6s in 1957. As well as a three-speed manual gearbox, there was an optional overdrive and from 1956 a Borg Warner DG automatic transmission. At first, drum brakes were fitted all round but front discs became optional in 1960 and standard from mid 1961. A convertible with overdrive was tested by The Motor magazine in 1961; it had a top speed of 88.3mph and could accelerate from 0-60 mph in 17.0 seconds. The test car list price was £1,193.This delightful Zephyr 6 Convertible is in very good condition and is offered in Caribbean Turquoise over Dover White with matching trim. The car was restored in 2005 according to invoices contained within the history file. This car and a sister car were used by ZZ Cars for weddings and events throughout the 2000's before being sold to a Ford enthusiast in 2014. This three-speed manual example with optional overdrive also boasts a continental kit; this can be seen at the rear of the car, giving the Zephyr that iconic American look that was so sought after throughout the 1960's. The gearbox was rebuilt in 2016 and the car has been lovingly cherished by the vendor, always garaged and well cared for. More recently, the car has been garaged and cared for by the vendor and in 2016, he had the gearbox rebuilt. The manually operated roof is in good order and complements the fabulous look of the car. The Zephyr was an icon of British motoring at the time and they are widely recognised as a highly sought after classic marque.

From the Estate of Alfred Dilwyn 'Dilly' Knox - Scholar, Papyrologist and WWI / WWII Codebreaker - a selection of items from his estate, including an autograph book filled with laid-in signatures of Knox's colleagues at 'ID25', July 1920 - likely given on the occasion of his wedding to Olive Roddam (with whom he worked). The book is filled with autographs of colleagues from 'Room 40' (later ID25) - special codebreaking department of the Admiralty in the First World War.  Autographs within the book include; Alastair Guthrie Denniston (appointed head of GC&CS 1919-1942, including work with Alan Turing in Bletchley Park), WF Clarke, Joan Harvey, Professor J. B. Henderson, Harold E. Boulton, Mary Jenkin, Ruth Page, Rev. William Montgomery (deciphered the famous Zimmermann Telegram), Richard Keigwin, Violet Hudson, Captain C. W. Hardisty, Victoria Down, Margaret Bayley, Dorothy Holcroft, Henry R. Ford, John Hooper, and others. All those named were known employees of ID25 / Room 40 and can be found on official staff lists. The first page of the book has a well detailed cartoon of Knox working in his bath (which was installed in his office), drawn and signed by 'GPM'. The fly leaf is dedicated 'To Mr Knox and Miss Roddam with best wishes from their Old Colleagues of ID25, July 1920.' Roddam and Knox married in that month.  Also included within the collection is Olive Roddam's personal vanity set, with gilt 'Olive' to the top corner. filled with various bottles, and sundry items. Knox's Barclay's Bank book from 1922 to 1931 is present, along with a wealth of correspondence relating to him, his wife Olive and their children / extended family - these documents appear more of 'personal' interest rather than relating to anything code-breaking related. A unique archive of effects relating to one of the most famous code-breakers of both the First and Second World Wars.  Provenance; all items belonged to the late Joanna Knox, granddaughter to Dilly and Olive Knox. The items were stored in a poor state and will show signs of damp / water damage in places.
