This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by search certificate no.11825-207620.The sculpture is a good example of 2nd-3rd century A.D. Palmyrene female funerary portrait types. The amount of jewellery displayed in these portraits could be a direct reflection of the wealth of the family, and certainly they reflected the jewellery possessed by the owner of the grave. Particularly important is the gesture of the raised hand: the evidence from several sanctuaries in the city corroborates the connection between this gesture and the female gender. There is no indication that the raised arm was associated with worship in the funerary sphere. [A video of this lot is available to view on Timeline Auctions Website]

Y&nbspA FINE VICTORIAN OXIDISED BRASS FORTIN-TYPE MERCURY FORECASTING BAROMETERGEORGE S. WOOD, LIVERPOOL, CIRCA 1880Constructed with central large-bore tube flanked by silvered scales applied to separate ebonised moulded panels calibrated in barometric inches 0-32 and with rack and pinion adjusted Vernier slide to right hand side, opposing an arrangement of three plates engraved with detailed forecasting predictions within fine scroll engraved margins and incorporating recording slide labelled SET AT, 9 A.M. YESTERDAY to top, the apex with further applied bridging plate signed G.S. Wood, LATE ABRAHAM & Co., OPTICIAN, LIVERPOOL, the base with substantial cylindrical cistern incorporating glazed collar enclosing ivory level pointer between screw-clamped collars over fine level adjustment screw to underside, the instrument mounted onto the backboard of a full-height half-round glazed case opening at the front, with domed cupola surmounted with a reeded gilt brass ball finial and conforming inverted dome to base, (mercury removed).130cm (51ins) approx. high, 20.5cm (8ins) wide, 15cm (8ins) deep. George S. Wood is recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS AND RETAILERS 1660-1900 as taking over the business of Abraham Abraham and Company located at 20 Lord Street, Liverpool in 1875 and working until 1894. The current lot is made to the principles laid down by Nicholas Fortin (1750-1831) and incorporates a glazed cistern so that the level can be calibrated via the adjustment screw to the base against an inverted conical ivory cone in the cistern in order to obtain consistency in the readings. This particular type of barometer provides an accurate reading hence was generally adopted for laboratory use throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. The combination of comprehensive scales complete with detailed observations to assist in forecasting (based on those laid-out by Admiral Fitzroy in the 1850's) and fine bow-fronted case suggests that the current lot was either made to be exhibited by the maker (possibly in his own showroom) or for a wealthy client or institution. Condition Report: Instrument appears complete with the exception of mercury and two (of the three) brass cistern securing rods and screws (for holding the base of the cistern tight against the cylindrical glass sleeve) which are now unfortunately missing. The silvering to the register plates has some patchy discolouration but engraving is fine and crisp. The case is in good original condition with noticeable faults apparently only limited to the finial being a little bent. Condition Report Disclaimer

It was utilised as an ‘Allstars’ car being driven by Holowczyc Krzysztof (with co-driver Fortin Jean-Marc) on two WRC events, namely the Swedish International Rally on 10th February 2000 as car 22, and by the same pairing as car 26 on the TAP Rallye de Portugal 2000 on 16th March 2000. Subsequently, Chassis #15 was totally re-prepared and later in 2000, was sold to well-known Northern Irish driver and businessman Andrew Nesbitt, now bearing the registration ‘V10 WRC’ and its famous ‘Cuisine de France’ livery. He and co-driver James O’Brien campaigned the car for 18 months, winning six events, including the Shell Donegal International Rally, breaking all previous records by taking the fastest times on all  22 special stages, and going on to win the Irish Tarmac Championship.  In 2002, the car was subsequently sold to Niall Maguire who converted it to right-hand drive and competed in the National Championship of Ireland, which he won in 2003. Our vendor bought the car from Maguire in March 2004 and has owned/campaigned it ever since, this being a long and fruitful custodianship. He has used Chassis #15 on all home national/international rallies including Jim Clark, Killarney, West Cork, Waterford, Wexford in Ireland, Bethune Rally and Rallye Charlemagne in France, Mull and Isle of Man; the last of these being the Pentraeth Glyn Memorial Stages in November 2021. The car is presented to auction in immaculate condition, having been the recipient of a full bare shell rebuild (costing £50,000), only 800 miles ago. With absolutely no expense spared and with a full photographic record, the work included an engine prepared by Graham Sweet of GT Motorsports Ltd., a fully rebuilt gearbox (£5,500) by Autosportif Engineering Ltd., new front hubs and new rear hub bearings, a new tubular front cross member (£3,000), a new Inconel exhaust manifold (£5,000), and a new AP clutch; the Reiger 3-way suspension had the fronts re-gassed and oiled, whist the rears were rebuilt. The bag tank is valid until 2024 (which can be extended by 2 years), with Motordrive seats (2022) and harnesses (2022), Lifeline Zero 360 fire extinguishers (serviced March 2021) and a Peltor intercom. The car has been solely prepared and run by GEO Preparation of Bromsgrove whilst in our vendor’s ownership.  Chassis #15 is a very well-known and highly revered car, having been hugely successful and reliable in the hands of just three owners (the last of which for 18 years), and is the final competing WRC99 example in the world – a testimony to its diligent ownership. The car's status and achievements are fully documented on the ewrc-results.com website: https://www.ewrc-results.com/carinfo/38-subaru-impreza-s5-wrc-99/?car=851This is a very special car, and we invite any interested parties to come and inspect it. He is known for both of his styles, realism and gestural abstraction. From the 1930's to 1960's, he created traditional style portraits, still lifes and landscapes, and from 1960 to 2001, he did gestural abstraction including organic collages, and geometric constructions. With his family's origins rooted in Sicily and born in Montreal, Canada, Joseph Giunta began his painting studies in 1925 at the age of 14 under the direction of Adrien Hebert and Johnny Johnston. From 1927 to 1930, he studied at the Monument National and at the Montreal School of Fine Arts and pursued his training under the supervision of Maurice Felix, Charles Maillard and Joseph St-Charles. He was influenced by the Impressionists and the Fauves, especially Paul Cezanne and Henri Matisse. In 1930 he continued his painting studies under the critical eye of professor C. Dyonnet, and in 1931 at the young age of 20, he was accepted for the first time at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts' Annual Spring Exhibition. He also studied and painted in Boston, Massachusetts from 1935 to 1937. Giunta's first exhibition was in 1936 at the Fine Art Department of Eaton's store in Montreal, where he exhibited along with Marc-Aurele Fortin. After 1958 Giunta started turning toward abstract art. He went on an observation journey that took him to Italy and France, and became influenced by the work of Kandinsky, Klee, Tapies, De Kooning and Miro. For Giunta, a period followed of gestural-abstraction painting and organic collages. He participated in a host of solo and group exhibitions, including at the Quebec Pavilion at the Osaka Japan World's Fair in 1970. In 1975 after the tragic death of his only son, Giunta did not exhibit for over nine years. He turned inward and emerged with geometric constructions. In 2001, the year of his death, a major exhibition was held at the Maison de la culture Frontenac in Montreal, along with the release of a posthumous documentary tribute to the artist by filmmaker Pepita Ferrari. It was titled "Joseph Giunta: A Silent Triumph", and has won 5 awards in 3 separate countries: Canada, the United States and France, and has helped to propel Giunta to international status.

§ Brian Hagger (British 1935-2006) Tyne Main Cole, Seagrave Roadsigned and dated 'BRIAN HAGGER 1972' (lower right)oil on canvas51 x 76.5cmProvenance:With Thackeray Gallery, London, where purchased by the present vendor 11th April, 1972A painter and draughtsman of urban and industrial scenes, Brian Hagger was born in Bury St Edmunds in 1935. After training at Ipswich School of Art and the Royal College of Art, under tutors including Colin Moss, Pif Fortin, Carel Weight, Ruskin Spear and Ceri Richards, Hagger became the studio assistant to William Scott and exhibited his work in numerous exhibitions in Piccadilly and the Kings Road. In London, Hagger enjoyed considerable critical success, holding numerous solo exhibitions at the Bramante Galleries and Thackery Gallery and he exhibited with the Royal Academy throughout the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. Typical of Hagger’s work both in style and subject, the present lots demonstrate Hagger’s atmospheric and characteristically restrained and atmospherically tempered palette, punctuated by unexpected flashes of colour. Describing his practice, Hagger wrote, ‘I have always been interested in Urban landscape and seascape. This has been the subject matter of my work for most of my life… although almost photographic in concept I try to base them on sound principle of abstract design. An important part of the paintings are the figures which are stylised and simplified to suit the painting in question’.
