Australia Manuscript order book, commandant's office, Port Arthur penal settlement, 1839-44 1-78, 97-132, 135-195 [7] pp., entries dated from 4th January 1839 to 6th January 1844, index at rear, contemporary blind-panelled sheep binding, externally worn and damp-stained, concomitant damp-staining to initial leaves, no free endpapers, some 20 pages towards front with annotations dated 1870-9 (comprising commercial accounts possibly for a firm of household decorators, and in some instances obscuring text), tear with loss of text to final leaf (index), some soiling and stainingNote: Note:An important primary source for the history of the settlement at Port Arthur, Tasmania, founded in 1830 as a timber station before becoming a designated penal colony in 1833, with former soldier Charles O'Hara Booth (1800-1851) its first captain commandant. Booth remained in post until 1844; under his auspices 'the township of Port Arthur was laid out on an extensive scale, harbour construction carried out and reclamation undertaken, a government farm established at Safety Cove, and the semaphore telegraph system brought to a high degree of efficiency for helping to arrest escapees. His administration of the convict system was extremely efficient, his rule was impartial, never capriciously tyrannical, and, though by present standards justice then seemed merciless, he was as prompt to reward as to punish; he had patient attention for the most trivial cases and used the lash as a last resort with great reluctance. Both his personal qualities and his administration received high praise from his contemporaries: Lieutenant-Governor Arthur, entirely satisfied, described him as "kind and humane, active and most determined", and Lieutenant-Governor Sir John Franklin was favourably impressed by his plans at Point Puer' (Australian Dictionary of Biography).Provenance: Private collection, Scotland.

[Newton, Isaac] - The Royal Society The Philosophical Transactions and collections, to the end of the year MDCC, abridged... (vols 1-3) by John Lowthorp. The fifth edition; (vols 4-5) by Henry Jones. The third edition; (vols 6-7) by John Eames and John Martyn; (vols 8-11) by John Martyn. London: W. Innys and others, 1749; vols 6-7: J. Brotherton and others, 1736; vols 8-9: W. Innys and others, 1747; vols 10-11: Lockyer Davis and Charles Reymers, 1756, 11 volumes, 4to, 309 (of 317) folding engraved plates, 2 (unnumbered) folding tables, contemporary calf, morocco lettering pieces, occasional light spotting, head of a few spines slightly rubbedNote: Note: The Abridgements cover the Transactions from their beginning in 1665 to 1750, but in fact the most important papers are substantially complete. Chapter III of volume 1 is entitled 'Opticks' and includes all of Newton's founding papers on the subject as well as the debate generated thereby, commencing with the famous 'A New Theory About Light & Colours' of 1672. In his biography of Newton, Michael White notes that Newton's Opticks, published in 1704, was based largely on the manuscripts composed some thirty years earlier and published in the Philosophical Transactions. Further papers on optics appear in subsequent volumes. 'If all the books in the world except the Philosophical Transactions were destroyed, it is safe to say that the foundations of physical science would remain unshaken, and that the vast intellectual progress of the last two centuries would be largely, although incompletely, recorded' (Huxley, quoted in Norman). It would be impossible to overestimate the historical importance of the Philosophical Transactions, which was first published and financed by Henry Oldenburg from March 1664-65 for the new Royal Society (founded in 1662), and, following his death, published by the Society itself. Nearly every contemporary British scientist and numerous foreign scientists contributed extensively to the Transactions in its first hundred years. Contributors include Thorbern Bergman, Edward Berkeley, Boerhaave, Boscovitch, Borelli, Boyle, Celsius, Euler, Fahrenheit, Ferguson, Flamstead, Franklin, Hales, Halley, Harvey, Hevelius, Hooke, Huygens, Leeuwenhoek, Leibnitz, Locke, Malpighi, Morgagni, Newton, Petty, Ray, Redi, Steno, Swammerdam, Wren, and numerous others. Sold as a periodical not subject to return

Andy Warhol. Interview. New York, Eigenverlag / Brant Publ., 1969-1989. Folio. Vast collection of 159 numbers of the legendary pop-art magazine from the first 19 years of its existence. Original illustrated wrappers (rubbed, bumped, a few covers with ball pen marginalia). Loosely inserted in 18 new chemises in bright colours in 18 blue cardboard slipcases. - See above for a listing of some of the early numbers. - The covers with colour offset portraits partially by Richard F. Bernstein among others as listed above. - This is a hard-to-find set without duplicates of the legendary magazine Andy Warhol self-published from 1969 during the greatest period of his Factory. Originally based on Warhol's tape recordings of parties, the mostly unedited "interviews" in written form, combined with large-format graphic advertisements and photos, offer a brilliant insight into the - not only New York - cultural scene of the time and what moved the Factory's employees, guests and muses. Alongside Warhol, other celebrities such as Bianca Jagger or Truman Capote later increasingly wrote their own contributions. In the 1980s, Warhol left the management of the magazine to Bob Colacello, under whose influence it gradually transformed into a fashion magazine. - A set hardly to be obtained in this quantity any more without duplicates. - Uncut, some browning due to paper, partially with foldmarks and backed defects, otherwise overall very well preserved.
