Each volume offers detailed illustrations and descriptions that aided in the identification and analysis of various plant materials used in drug preparation. Dr. Ludwig Konrad Albert Koch, born to lawyer Johann Jacob Koch (1805–1886) and Dorothea Wilhelmine (née Schilling, 1827–1907), was a prominent figure in the field of botany. His academic journey began at TH Darmstadt and Ruprecht-Karls-University Heidelberg, culminating in a doctorate in philosophy on August 8, 1874, from Heidelberg. Koch's early career saw him serving as an assistant at the Phytophysiological Institute and Herbarium. His academic prowess earned him a professorship at Heidelberg on June 4, 1877. Following a brief tenure as a lecturer and acting head of the Plant Physiological Institute at the Agricultural Academy in Proskau, Koch returned to Heidelberg, where he made significant contributions to botany from the winter semester of 1878/79 until 1929. His academic journey saw several milestones: he became an extraordinary professor on February 7, 1882, an honorary professor on March 15, 1902, and was honored again with the title on February 21, 1908, all at the University of Heidelberg. Koch's achievements were recognized on November 29, 1885, when he was elected a member of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina, matriculation number 2560. His distinguished career was further acknowledged in 1910 when he was awarded the Knight's Cross First Class of the Order of the Zähringer Lion.
