A COMPOSITE SET OF EIGHT MAHOGANY DINING CHAIRS IN GEORGE III STYLE LABELLED GILL & REIGATE, IN GEORGE III STYLE, EARLY 20TH CENTURY To include two pairs of armchairs, all with anthemion backs, the ivorine label 'GILL & REIGATE, LONDON, W.' an armchair 99cm high, 62cm wide, 53cm deep TOGETHER WITH TWO FURTHER SIDE CHAIRS See BIFMO, Gill & Reigate, (fl1899-1958), recorded as 'Dealers in Antique & Modern Furniture, Artistic Decorators and Upholsterers'. The firm were decorators King George V and Queen Mary was said to be a customer. They exhibited and advertised widely in publications such as Country Life and the Burlington Magazine.

ATTRIBUTED TO GIOVACCHINO FORTINI (SETTIGNANO 1671-1736 FLORENCE) A MARBLE FIGURE OF A STANDING ECCLESIASTICAL FIGURE ITALIAN, CIRCA 1700 Possibly a depiction of St Pietro I Orseolo (928-987), a former Doge of Venice who left that office to become a Benedictine monk 77cm high, 26.5cm wide, 22cm deep Traditionally this figure was known as Saint Norbert, holding a bishop's mitre and scroll, however it has been suggested that what has been taken to be a mitre is in fact the Doge's cap, and he wears a Benedictine habit. Giovacchino Fortini was one of the most respected Tuscan sculptors of the 18th Century. He is best known for his work in the sculptural and architectural decoration of the Complex of San Firenze, where he was responsible for the interior architecture of the Church of the Filippini. His patrons included Anna Maris Luisa de'Medici, the last daughter of Grand Duke Cosimo III de Medici. Provenance: Heim Gallery, London, 1984. The end of one finger is missing. There is a noticeable join line around the neck, indicating the head has been previously re-affixed. Overall, minor surface discolouration and wear. An Aesthetic ebonised side cabinet, c.1880, by Snowdon of Rochdale, with chamfered and gilt borders, mounted with a bevelled glass back, a shelf, over a spindle gallery, the fall-front cabinet below mounted with three painted pottery panels, depicting cherries and flowers, flanked with a pigeon and a heron, each on a flower head and crackle painted background, stamped 'Snowdon Rochdale 399' over a shelf, with further galleries to the sides, on turned supports, 94.5cm wide 43.5cm deep132cm highWilliam Snowdon was listed at Butts, Rochdale and Oldham in The Furniture Gazette Directory, 1876 and 1877.Snowdon showed a white oak fireplace buffet with dado furniture, a couple of dining chairs in white oak which were elaborately carved and upholstered in morocco, and some bedroom suites in sycamore and walnut with gold enrichments at the Yorkshire Exhibition, 1879.In 1883, the firm opened new extensive showrooms at 19 Yorkshire Street, Oldham, whilst maintaining cabinet works and showrooms in Rochdale. In 1885, they were awarded the contract for the supply of furniture for the boardroom and offices of the Fern Cotton Spinning Mills, Shaw, near Oldham.Condition ReportLeft tile - chip to base edge. Central tile cracked - all crazed. Lock area - chips and damage where cabinet opened without unlocking. He went on to exhibit regularly with the Devon Guild of Craftsmen during the 1970s/80s. Faulkner also began teaching in 1974 and now runs furniture-making courses from Totnes, as well as specialising in one-off original pieces to commission.Condition ReportOne example with some minor rocking to the frame.
