Frederick Arthur Bridgman (American, 1847-1928)Ouled-Nahil, Dancing Girl of Biskra oil on canvas43.5 x 59.5cm (17 1/8 x 23 7/16in).Footnotes:Painted circa 1880.ProvenancePrivate collection, France.Exhibited(possibly) New York, 1881.LiteratureFrederick Arthur Bridgman, Winters in Algeria, New York, 1890, illustrated p. 227.The present lot depicts an Ouled-Nahïl woman dancing in an interior with two musicians seated before her in the lower right corner of the composition and two observers to her left and one man seated behind her. This is a close-up of a bare Biskra interior with no windows or doorways indicated, although light streaming from the left suggests an unseen aperture. Biskra buildings were simply constructed with little or no furniture. The Ouled-Nahïl women traditionally left their villages in western Algeria to earn money for their doweries by dancing in other towns, such as Biskra. They were known for their provocative movements and elaborate costume, consisting of unusually large head-dresses as the beaded white and blue one the dancer wears in this painting. They also wore much jewellery — bracelets, earrings, necklaces, and a decorated chain that fastens the woman's wrap. In the early 1880s, Bridgman began showing many views and interiors from Biskra such as the present lot. His intense earthy palette, strong modelling and dramatic lighting suggest similarities to his Egyptian paintings of the late 1870s, and therefore this painting may have been stylistically a transitional work.Biskra became a popular winter place for Europeans, and the Ouled-Nahïl women a significant fixture there, identified with prostitution as well as entertainment. Unlike Etienne Dinet, who later became famous for his depictions of these women, Bridgman composed only one scene of them (although two variants) over the course of his career. The present work was reproduced in Bridgman's 1890 book Winters in Algeria about his travels throughout the country. For a comparable work see Danseuse Ouled-Nahïl (Touggourt)/Dancer Ouled-Nahïl Touggourt, Paris Salon, Société française, 1927, illus., in Catalogue illustré, pl. 62.We are grateful to Ilene Susan Fort, Ph.D., F. A. Bridgman authority and Curator Emerita, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, for confirming the authenticity of this work on the basis of photographs. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Benjamin Goodison served as Royal cabinetmaker to George II from 1727 onwards, furnishing apartments at Hampton Court and St. James’s Palace. Longford Castle was built during the Elizabethan period, with silver and gold retrieved from the wreck of one of the Duke of Medina-Sidonia’s galleons, which sank in the wake of the Spanish Armada. In 1717, it came under the ownership of Sir Edward des Bouverie, whose family were descendants of a Huguenot refugee, Laurens des Bouverie (1536-1610), who in the late sixteenth century fled persecution by the Catholics in the then Spanish Netherlands.Following settlement in England, his successors earned vast fortunes during the seventeenth century with the Levant Company, profiting from a time of flourishing trade with Turkey. In 1713, Sir William des Bouverie (1656-1717) was knighted by Queen Anne, from which point they transitioned quickly into nobility, amassing wealth and status through the purchase, lease and inheritance of land, particularly in the South West of England. Upon Sir Edward’s death in 1737, his brother Sir Jacob inherited the castle and brought about the advent of several generations of refurbishment, refurnishing and remodelling. Amelia Smith in 'Longford Castle: The Treasures and the Collectors' credits Sir Jacob Bouverie as ‘the most important patron and collector of art to reside at Longford Castle’, acquiring some of its greatest assets, including ‘two suites of fine eighteenth century gilded and upholstered furniture’, of which these mirrors may have been a part. Some of the decorative motifs seen in these mirrors are similar to those in a pair of pedestals, also attributed to Goodison, which were sold at Christie's, 'The Collection of Paul F. Walter', 27 September 2017. The remaining four are still situated in the castle’s picture gallery, in which also reside gilded furniture attributed to the likes of Giles Grendey and William Vile. Other notable pieces that were acquired during this period include Hans Holbein’s ‘Ambassadors’, sold to the National Gallery in 1890, and works by Velázquez, Claude Lorrain, Poussin, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Sir Godfrey Kneller and Van Dyck. Backboards appear to be original and don't appear to have been off, with the plates appearing relatively contemporary, however the shaped bevel does not follow the profile of the frame, inferring that the plates were probably re-acquisitioned from a slightly earlier pair. Chips, small knocks and losses to gilding and gesso. Later gilding and gesso to the frames. Gilding worn through in places and quite unstable, with areas flaking. One fitted with later girandole sconce brackets. Some small losses to floral detail to crest and apron. Some areas of re-touching and overpainting. Splits and cracks to frames. One crest a little wobbly. Some scratches to plates. Traces of old worm damage to the backboards, particularly to one. General wear commensurate with age.

An Henry VIII boarded oak chest,c.1500, the hinged lid with a channel-moulded edge, above a solid front with five variously decorated chip-carved panels and traces of red painted detail, with an impressed 'A' to the front and 'AH' to the underside of the lid, raised on stile supports,103cm wide33cm deep42cm highProvenance: Acquired from the personal collection of Christopher Pickvance, ex-Chairman of the Regional Furniture Society.A rare and undocumented Tudor chest, the carved decorative elements echoing mullion-style windows of late medieval stonework. The decorative register and construction of the chest places it within a known group thought to originate from the eastern counties of England, most likely Suffolk. Identical diagonal linear infills can be seen on both a chest front in the V&A collection (W.430-1922) and a chest from the Clive Sherwood Collection, Sotheby's, 22 May 2002, lot 53.Literature: See Cescinsky and Gribble, 'Early English Furniture and Woodwork Vol ii' (fig 30.31.32) for further late fifteenth-century examples, each with comparable structural and decorative elements, and notably each also showing a void under the lockplate, typical of the regional style and period.Condition ReportOverall appears in good order for its age. All panels warped and bowed. The front panel is warped, with it having separated from the base board, with two pieces of later wooden moulding added to cover the gap. Traces of historic woodworm and some rot, however this does not appear to be active. Small splits and scratches. Various later old nails and pins. General wear commensurate with age and use.
