It wasn’t until the 11 Duke of Hamilton in the 19th century that the family made Brodick Castle a primary residence with major renovations in 1844, almost tripling the size of the building, under the architect James Gillespie Graham. Now under the care of the National Trust for Scotland, Brodick Castle has a wealth of family heirlooms in the house. Particularly interesting is a collection of mounted hardstones and porcelains that were collected by William Beckford. The Beckford Collection came to Brodick through Beckford’s youngest daughter, Susan Euphemia (1786-1859) as they had a better relationship than her elder sister. Susan Euphemia became the wife of Alexander, 10th Duke of Hamilton (1767-1852). She inherited much of the Beckford Collection and by descent the Collection passed to William, 12th Duke of Hamilton (d. 1895).Lady Mary Hamilton would have therefore experienced the collection. Her admiration for history can be seen in a portrait of her dressed as Mary Hamilton, a lady in waiting to Mary Queen of Scots. Now housed in the National Portrait Gallery accession number NPG Ax41207.Together, Mary and William had one daughter named Mary (1884-1957) who married the Duke of Montrose, cementing a fruitful alliance with another aristocratic landowning family in Scotland. As they had no male heir, the family estates passed to a male cousin, but provisions were made their daughter, Lady Mary, and her father ensured that Brodick Castle was left to her where it continued to be an important family home right up until the 20th century.

He attested at Edinburgh 02/09/1914 and went to Egypt as a Sergeant in the 5/6th Battalion Royal Scots 15/09/1915. Discharged to a commission 06/11/1916, he was posted to the 16th Battalion Royal Scots 11/12/1916 and was in command of a platoon of A Company when they participated in the attack on Roeux 28/04/1917 - part of the Battle of Arras. "I mopped up the houses and cellars in my area, taking a few prisoners.....we encountered what appeared to be a preliminary counter-attack by the enemy. For some time we maintained our position by rifle fire and bombing in the hope of reinforcements arriving." Henderson attracted the attention of a sniper, and received "a through and through wound of the front of the right thigh....the openings [of which] were large & ragged" and was made a prisoner. He attributed his eventual recovery from his wound to the ministrations of British NCOs and Russian doctors among his fellow prisoners "as the Boche did very little for us, especially in the way of food." Interned in Switzerland, he was repatriated 09/12/1918, and resumed his career in government service. In 1933, as General Inspector Department of Health for Scotland, he superintended the evacuation of the few remaining inhabitants of the remote island of St Kilda.

After a turbulent childhood King became an apprentice at the Hatton Garden jewellery firm MJ Greengross at only 14 years old in 1927. During this time King became adept at mounting diamonds and began to learn the mechanics of jewellery-making.This artistic education was somewhat disrupted with the Second World War, during which King worked as a planning engineer in an aeroplane factory. King climbed the ranks and led a department of 100 workers, while also learning complex tool techniques. This wartime experience was translated into the design and manufacture of jewellery, with King making uncredited pieces for Rolex, Cartier, Asprey, and Garrard in the latter half of the 1930s.King continued on to build his own company with a factory in Watford, Hertfordshire. He designed a plethora of jewellery pieces and was honoured with tie pins and five strawberry-leaf tiaras being worn at Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation in 1953. In 1965 King built a new factory and increased output of his work to an impressive 25,000 gold and silver pieces a year. In addition to mass production, the brand also played with aesthetic design, with their “bark finish” rings, bracelets, and watches being very popular. As a result, Pattie Boyd chose a “bark finish” wedding ring for her marriage to Beatle George Harrison in 1966. Lot 83, with its circular-cut emeralds and sapphires also shows King’s ability to create an exciting and pleasing piece. The brand continued to grow and flourish, acquiring in particular more space in the watch market. King was therefore celebrated in exhibitions at Goldsmith’s Hall such as a 1984 solo show and being included in the 1999 Treasures of the 20th Century exhibit.Condition Report: Clasp secureNormal signs of wear, overall in good conditionTotal gross weight approx. 75g
