He entered the Indian Civil Service in 1901, and served as Private Secretary to the Governor of Bombay, 1912-14; as Collector and District Magistrate, Sind, 1923-31, for which services he was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire; and Commissioner in Sind, 1931-35, for which services he was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Star of India.
