Seine Herrschaft begann im Jahre 117 und endete mit seinem Tod 138 n.Chr. Hadrian war ein sehr vielseitig versierter Regent und hatte eine Unzahl von Interessen. Diese Leidenschaften verfolgte er mit Ehrgeiz. Seine Hingabe galt der alten griechischen Kultur und da insbesondere der Stadt Athen. So wurde während seiner Regentschaft die Bibliothek von Athen, das Pantheon und die Engelsburg in Rom erbaut. Auch die Errichtung der Hadriansvilla in Tivoli geht auf seine Initiative zurück.
