10th (Royal) Hussars silver medal, 41mm diam. Obv: P.O.W feather plume within Garter “Prince of Wales’s Own”, above a scroll “Royal Hussars” set within a wreath of roses, thistles and shamrocks. Rev: mounted Hussar within similar wreath with engraved date 1846 below; the suspender being a hinged bar. The edge engraved in script “Presented to Sergt Thos Oldbury by his Bror Sergts and Sergt Majors as a mark of their esteem” (Bulmer R63). GVF Note: Thomas Oldbury born Birmingham 1798, attested at Weymouth Dorset 22nd April 1819, promoted Sergeant 4th June 1829, and was Armourer Sergeant for 16 years. He left the service in April 1846, aged 48, as being unfit to proceed with his regiment to India or for any further service on account of his age. His trade was shown as lock maker and the 1851 census shows the 53 year old as a Gun lock maker in Birmingham. He died in 1876
