AN 18th CENTURY FOUR POUNDER NAVAL GUN BELIEVED TO BE FROM HMS BOUNTY, 170cms long, barrel only, no trunnion. One of four such guns carried by this famous vessel on its trip to Tahiti to collect breadfruit under the command of Lt. William Bligh. Some officers and crew mutinied on the onward voyage and Bligh and colleagues were cast adrift to make an epic small boat voyage. The mutineers took the Bounty to Pitcairn where she was burned on 23rd January 1790. A significant and interesting part of British maritime history and the subject of books and well-known films. Two of the guns were subsequently raised in 1845. One of these was used to salute ships visiting Pitcairn but this practice was discontinued after a magistrate was killed by an accidental firing. This gun remained in Pitcairn for a time and was then removed; it is probably the gun that is the subject of this sale. The other of the two guns was taken to Norfolk Island, where it remains. A third gun was raised much later (1970s) and is in Pitcairn Island along with the fourth gun which was salvaged in 1998.Evelyn Stuart Parker (1869 - 1936) was a scion of the shipping and trading firm of Sandbach, Thinne and Co. of Liverpool. This gun was brought to Liverpool in 1898 by the company`s ship-rigged sailing vessel, Orealla. In 1913 Evelyn Stuart Parker purchased Little Cumbrae Island, off the Scottish North Ayrshire coast and the gun went there. In 1936, the island passed to Evelyn`s son, Ian Robertson Parker who in turn sold it, in 1960, to Peter Kaye, a businessman and engineering company owner. The Bounty gun was part of the sale to Peter Kaye, from who's estate it is now offered for sale. The sale includes a manuscript letter dated from Pitcairn, 5th April 1898, which was given to Captain Stewart, commander of the Orealla stating "This is to our knowledge the last of the HMS Bounty`s armament. This gun was fished up in Bounty Bay, Pitcairn Isle where she was wrecked". The letter is signed by "J.R. McCoy Pres." (Great grandson of William McCoy, one of the original mutineers).

THE PERSONAL FIELD BINOCULARS OF COLONEL PATRICK ANTHONY PORTEOUS, V.C. (1918-2000) Awarded the Victoria Cross, Operation Cauldron, Dieppe, August 26th 1942 whilst attached to Lord Lovett's No.4 Commando, the French & Sons brown leather case, stamped 'P.A. Porteous', containing a pair of American Bausch & Lomb 6 x 30 field glasses, bearing War Department arrow devices, thought to have been carried by Major Porteous on the raid, together with related family photographs, newspaper cuttings and ephemera.Provenance: Gifted to Patrick Porteous's close friend Flying Officer Peter Duncan Morris, Patrick being the best man at Peter's wedding in London during the Second World War, thence by descent, written clarification provided.London Gazette 2nd October 1942War Office, 2nd October 1942.The KING has been graciously pleased to approve the award of The VICTORIA CROSS to: -Captain (temporary Major) Patrick Anthony Porteous (73033), Royal Regiment of Artillery (Fleet, Hants.).At Dieppe on the 19th August 1942, Major Porteous was detailed to act as Liaison Officer between the two detachments whose task was to assault the heavy coast defence guns.In the initial assault Major Porteous, working with the smaller of the two detachments, was shot at close range through the hand, the bullet passing through his palm and entering his upper arm. Undaunted, Major Porteous closed with his assailant, succeeded in disarming him and killed him with his own bayonet thereby saving the life of a British Sergeant on whom the German had turned his aim.In the meantime, the larger detachment was held up, and the officer leading this detachment was killed and the Troop Sergeant-Major fell seriously wounded. Almost immediately afterwards the only other officer of the detachment was also killed.Major Porteous, without hesitation and in the face of a withering fire, dashed across the open ground to take over the command of this detachment. Rallying them, he led them in a charge which carried the German position at the point of the bayonet and was severely wounded for the second time. Though shot through the thigh he continued to the final objective where he eventually collapsed from loss of blood after the last of the guns had been destroyed.Major Porteous's most gallant conduct, his brilliant leadership and tenacious devotion to a duty which was supplementary to the role originally assigned to him, was an inspiration to the whole detachment.Operation Cauldron as the assault on Dieppe was code-named, was the biggest raid of the Second World War; the attacking force of nearly 6,000 men was drawn from the 2nd Canadian Division and three British Commandos. The aim was to see if it was possible to capture a port on the French coast prior to a full-scale invasion. In the event, the raid proved such a disaster that on D-Day two years later landings on the open beaches were preferred. No 4 Commando, in which Porteous was serving, was the only unit to capture its objective. The Canadians, in the centre of the assault, had never been in action before, and to their dismay found that their tanks were unable to negotiate the stony beach; they were cut to pieces by fire from carefully sited strongpoints that had been tunnelled out of the cliff. When the landing force withdrew, it had suffered 3,670 casualties, lost 29 tanks, 106 aircraft and a destroyer. The Germans had lost 591 men. No 4 Commando, commanded by the intrepid Lord Lovat, numbered 252 soldiers. It landed three and a half miles west of the main attack and advanced in two sections. One was to make its way up a river valley, then climb a slope, push on through a wood, overcome defended positions and demolish the six-gun German battery which had been sited at Varengeville. The other section of the Commandos was to make a slightly more direct approach on the target. Porteous, then a temporary Captain, was liaison officer between the two groups. The Commandos crept forward in the dark and destroyed barbed wire, telephone lines and some German defences, and succeeded in crossing a minefield. When daylight came they were confronted by 35 German assault troops, whom they killed, but others soon took their place and the Commandos began to lose men too.During the initial assault on the battery, Porteous found himself with the smaller of the two detachments. He was shot at close range by a German, the bullet passing through his hand and his arm. Undaunted, Porteous, using the other hand, shot his assailant dead.Next, Porteous saved the life of a sergeant by disarming his attacker and dispatching the German with his own bayonet. In the meantime, the larger detachment had been held up, its two officers killed, and the troop sergeant seriously wounded.Without hesitating, and in the face of withering fire, Porteous dashed across open ground to take charge of this section. He rallied them, and then led a bayonet charge which carried the battery. Porteous was the first to reach the guns, and as he did so was severely wounded for a second time, being shot through the thigh. He fell, but carried on to the final objective, only losing consciousness from loss of blood once he had organised the successful demolition of the battery. An elderly Frenchwoman who had witnessed part of the action presented each of the surviving Commandos with a newly laid egg, a much-appreciated gift, eggs being scarce in England at that time.If the battery at Varengeville had not been destroyed, casualties among shipping and the main attacking force would have been even greater than they were. The battery was stubbornly defended by 250 Germans, behind concrete, wire, landmines, mortars and concealed machine gun posts. One hundred and fifty Germans were killed.Luck played its part. As the Commandos secured their objective, a squadron of Messerschmitt's swept in low overhead - but took the Commandos for Germans. The British waved cheerfully at them and were relieved to receive a wave back from the squadron leader. Porteous received news of his award from his mother while in hospital. The citation for Porteous's VC stated: "Captain Porteous's most gallant conduct, his brilliant leadership and tenacious devotion to duty . . . was an inspiration to the whole detachment." He was invested with his Victoria Cross by King George VI on October 28, 1942. £400-500 (Plus 23.4% Buyer’s Premium inc. VAT)

THE WORMHOUDT MASSACRE, DUNKIRK 1940 - AN HISTORIC & IMPORTANT PAPER ARCHIVE comprising the personal research papers, notes and correspondences of the late Reverend Leslie Aitken M.B.E.,  author of 'On the Road to Dunkirk. Wilhelm Mohnke and the Wormhout Massacre - The Real Evidence', including original papers from the investigation team, dated 1947, unpublished hand-written letters from serving soldiers and other witness accounts, maps, diagrams and photographs; also letters to and from Jeff Rooker M.P. regarding the proposed extradition from Germany of S.S. Gruppenfuhrer Wilhelm Mohnke, thought to be responsible for ordering the massacre, on charges of war crimes.  Note: Herded inside the stinking, airless cowshed, with barely room to stand upright, the 100 British soldiers, many wounded after five hours of fierce fighting, called out to their captors for water. Captain Lynn-Allen, the most senior officer, banged on the bolted door, shouting: ''For the love of God, there is no more room in here.'' Outside, in the sweltering May sunshine, a German officer laughed and told him: ''Where you are going there will be a lot of room.''At that moment Captain Lynn-Allen can have had little doubt as to what their fate would be. What remained of his men, the 2nd Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment - along with remnants of The Cheshire Regiment and The Royal Artillery - had been crammed into the tiny barn by an elite squad of the SS Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler regiment, whose orders, Lynn-Allen must have realised, would have been to take no prisoners. The Geneva Convention had little meaning here.Lynn-Allen asked that his men be allowed a final smoke and, with a calm dignity, he doled out Players cigarettes to his shocked soldiers: men who had fought to the last clip of ammunition before capture. He must have known his mission, though crucial, was nigh-on impossible. When he had arrived at Wormhoudt, a small village on the road from Cassel to Dunkirk, two days before on May 26, 1940, his orders had been clear: ''Tell your men, with our backs to the wall, the division stands and fights.'' It was imperative they hold Wormhoudt, pancake-flat with a little surrounding cover so that thousands of British Expeditionary Force soldiers who were encircled by advancing German units could be evacuated from Dunkirk. The longer he kept the crack SS squads at bay, the more allied soldiers of the Royal Navy and flotilla of little ships could save.Crushed behind Lynn-Allen by the barn door, Private Bert Evans, just 19, shared his cigarette with his friend Charlie. As they drew deep, Charlie turned to him and said: ''This is it, Bert. We're finished.'' They were to be his last words. A few seconds later two grenades were lobbed into the barn and it was raked by machine-gun fire. When it stopped, only a handful of survivors, many of them hideously wounded, lay amid the bodies of their dead comrades. The barn door was yanked open and, one by one, those still alive were pulled out and shot in the back of the head. Inside, his right arm all but blown off by the blast, Bert Evans watched in horror as the bodies piled up by the door. Lynn-Allen, miraculously unscathed, saw their chance. He grabbed Pte Evans and made a run for it, dragging him behind.Lynn-Allen could have bolted alone. He could have run, literally, for his life. Instead, he stayed with his wounded and barely conscious private, refusing to leave him. It cost Lynn-Allen his life. When the pair staggered into a pond, an SS officer who had pursued them fired at his forehead from point-blank range and shot Pte Evans in the neck. As both men disappeared under the water, they were left for dead.''And that's how he died. That's how my captain died. Saving my life,'' Bert says, nodding his head slowly. ''Charlie knew. When he said we were finished, I knew too? But my captain died saving my life. He was a fine man and a fine soldier. There isn't a day that I don't thank God for it. And thank God too that we did our duty. Those men who died in that shed. They gave their lives so that the men could be taken off the beaches of Dunkirk. They did it because it was their duty. And they did it for their comrades. You fight for your King. You fight for your country. But most of all you fight for your brothers. The men who stand shoulder to shoulder.''Today Bert, the sole survivor of the Wormhoudt massacre, is 89. His cornflower-blue eyes are clouded with cataracts and he isn't as steady on his feet as he once was. But each year, on May 28, as the nation salutes the evacuation of Dunkirk during which 340,000 British and allied soldiers were plucked from the beaches, Bert's thoughts are with the brothers in arms he lost that day.In recent years the French authorities and British veteran associations have restored the barn at Wormhoudt, and today it is a shrine to the men murdered inside. It stands in the middle of open fields: a small, thatched building, its flimsy walls festooned with wreaths, crosses and faded photographs, testimony that it was the site of one of the most horrific massacres of the War.£200-300 (Plus 23.4% Buyer’s Premium inc. An interesting L.S., with two lines holograph, one page folio, dated 25th October 1812, only two days after the coup attempt, to Jean François Dejean, President of the military Commission in charge of Malet´s court-martial. Savary states `I have taken to the Abbaye prison former General Desnoyers, and left him there at your disposal. Partner in crime of Malet, he received in his home, through his pretended aide-de-camp, a spade, a military cap, and a General uniform with a letter note explaining the events and instructing him to go to place Vendôme…´ and Pierre Augustin Hulin (1758-1841),French General who decided to take over the Bastille. Hulin was Commandant of the Headquarters in Paris at the time of the coup attempt. Hulin did not accept Malet´s orders after several questions asking for further explanations. Malet took his gun and shot, breaking Hulin´s jaw. L.S., Hulin, one page, folio, 6th February 1814, to the Duke de Feltre. Hulin refers to a letter received from General Berryer, Soisson Commandant, and requests orders based on the letter content, and mentions having forwarded a second copy to King Joseph Bonaparte, acting on behalf of Napoleon I during his absence.
