(1939-1891) Purchased by A.Tilbrook from Woolley and Wallis from whom purchased by Robert Kime Literature:G.A.F. Rogers, The Arts Club and its Members, London, 1920.J. Mordaunt Crook, William Burges and the high Victorian dream, London, revised edition 1981.ed. J. Mordaunt Crook, The Strange genius of William Burges, 'art-architect', 1827-1881: a catalogue to a centenary exhibition organised jointly by the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Cardiff, 1981. Judy Rudoe, Decorative Arts 1850-1950, A Catalogue of the British Museum Collection, 1994 This rare silver and enamel pedestal cup is one of five silver 'mazer bowls' designed by William Burges (1827-81) for his friends at The Arts Club. They were made by the silversmith Barkentin & Krall, London, renowned for their richly decorated metalwork that revived 'lost' techniques as well as ornamentation associated with medieval objects and are probably those listed against 8 February 1878 in Burges' Estimate Book for 12 August 1875 to 30 March 1881 (Mordaunt Crook, pp. 316; 412, f/n 25). Detailed drawings of the cups, including the French Gothic enamel motifs that encircle the stems, form part of Burges' album of designs entitled Orfevrerie domestique held in the Royal Institute of British Architects (15-16; RIBA 12863). Another 'mazer bowl' of near-identical design, was made in maple wood with silver and enamelled mounts for Burges himself (now in the British Museum 1981,0603.1). Each cup has an individual enamel boss inside the cup with a monogram together with an engraving around the rim denoting who the cup was made for. The cup offered here was for Henry Curzon (1839-91), an architect with offices in Lincoln Inn Fields, and a member of The Arts Club from 1865-94 (Rogers, p. 68). The other silver cups were for: Alex Rivington, A.C. Bell, B. Frere and R.W. Edis, who were either fellows of the Institute of British Architects or the Society of Arts (op. Cit., p. 412, f/n 25). The silver cup for Alex Rivington sold Sotheby's, New York, 4 June 1998, lot 126, and the one for A.O. Bell sold JS Fine Art, Banbury, 24 October 2015, lot 32 (for £27,500). Some of the enamel decoration was common to both the set of five cups and Burges own cup: the narrow band of black squares is annotated in Burges' design, 'this goes round all the cups'; a butterfly and diaper pattern between each quatrefoil is marked 'this is common to all' (RIBA 12863). An entry in Burges' Estimate Book notes the higher cost of the silver cups to those made of maple wood 'if silver bowls instead of maple £12. 10s.'. Maple cups cost £10. 10s. However, the entry for the silver bowls was later annotated on 1 March 1878: '5 cups complete in silver for £50' (Victoria and Albert Museum, Ms. 86.88.52).   Condition Report: Maker's marks obscured, rest are clearSlightly wobblesMinor play to the stem where the stem and bowl are bolted together, with a slight gapBowl rim misshapedEngraving crispEnamel in good conditionSome pittingLight scratches and wear commensurate with age and useCondition Report Disclaimer

1963 Bentley S3 Continental CoupéCoachwork by H J Mulliner & Co.Registration Number: OLM 7Chassis Number: BC120XAEngine Number: 60 ABCLaunched in 1962, the Bentley S3 Continental was the final Rolls-Royce/Bentley model to be constructed with a separate chassis. The 6.2-Litre V8 engine was improved with a higher 9:1 compression ratio and larger SU carburettors, and produced a healthy 210hp. The coachwork, originally penned by Vilhelm Koren, continued the non-top front-to-rear waistline, but now featured twin paired headlamps and styled flashing indicators and side lamps.First registered on 3 May 1963, OLM 7's first owner was Lady Margaret Howard, Countess of Suffolk, an American heiress. Reported to have had just five owners since, it has been in the current family ownership since 1975.One of only ten cars to carry this body style - six right-hand drive and four left-hand drive - this is reputedly the last of the ten to survive. The build cards show that the car was supplied new with electric windows, parking and flashing lights, a 630T radio, India Super Speed tyres and a special driver's seat. A beautiful Negretti & Zambra Auto Altimeter takes pride of place on the dash.Presented in 'Regal Red' with cream coachline and beige leather interior with matching carpets, the car has been fastidiously maintained by Rolls-Royce and Bentley specialists, P&A Wood, since 1969, and there are significant invoices for major works, including a full repaint in the original colours in 2010, within the history file. Invited by Bentley Motors to participate in the launch of the Bentley Arnage at Le Mans in 1998, the car is also mentioned in the book 'The History of P&A Wood, Attention to Detail' a copy of which is included in the sale. With a recorded 105,222 miles at the time of cataloguing, believed to be original, the history file contains the original buff logbook and current V5C, along with copies of the build cards and numerous invoices from P&A Wood dating back many years. Condition ReportThis car has had a huge amount spent on it at P & A Wood and at Jonathan Wood, however the car is being sold by the executors of the estate and as such Sworders have provided an extended 5-day viewing period for purchasers to satisfy themselves as to condition. The history file will be available during the viewing and on the day prior to the sale Mr Tanner's in-house mechanic will also be on hand to start the car.The car is in good overall condition and the seats appear to be clean.

‘Sergeant Fotheringham, a chap I got the D.C.M. for at Ypres, was with me, and he kept bringing the men on in the most magnificent way, and he was wonderful from first to last, and if he had lived would have got a V.C. or bar to his D.C.M.’ (Scots Guard, by Captain W. H. G. Ewart refers) A fine Great War ‘Ypres 1917’ D.C.M. group of four awarded to Lance-Sergeant J. Fotheringham, Scots Guards, for gallantry at Wijdendrigt on 14-15 September during a heavy gas barrage when he rescued a wounded comrade; he died of wounds received in the battle of Cambrai, 26 November 1917 Distinguished Conduct Medal, G.V.R. (12015 A.L. Sjt: J. Fotheringham. 2/S. Gds:); 1914-15 Star (12015 Pte. J. Fotheringham. S. Gds:); British War and Victory Medals (12015 A. Cpl. J. Fotheringham. S. Gds.) together with Memorial Plaque (James Fotheringham) contact marks and polished, otherwise nearly very fine (5) £1,200-£1,600 --- D.C.M. London Gazette 19 November 1917; citation published 6 February 1918: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in charge of a party of men loading trucks. When the enemy put down a heavy gas barrage he collected his scattered parties, superintended the adjustment of box-respirators, and guided them down the track. Hearing that a wounded man had been left behind he returned with two stretcher bearers through a gas barrage and brought him to the dressing station.’ Annotated gazette states: ‘Wijdendrigt, 14-15 September 1917’. James Fotheringham served with the 2nd battalion, Scots Guards, in France from 25 May 1915. He won the D.C.M. for gallantry at Ypres in September 1917 and died of wounds received during the battle of Cambrai on 26 November 1917. His death during an attack on Bourlon Wood is described by Lieutenant (later Captain) W. H. G. Ewart in his book Scots Guard: ‘We then found some very windy Highlanders and dismounted cavalry, and we got orders to push on and drive the Bosches out at daybreak. This of course was sheer open fighting, and quite different from anything we had done before except on field days. As soon as it got light the three companies advanced in extended order, and it was not long before the bullets began to fly, and Howard's Company got hung up by machine-guns on the left. Consequently we could not get on. Desultory and sometimes very sharp fighting went on for about two and a half hours. We sniped a lot of Bosches. Then Howard got badly wounded, and it was obvious the Bosches were too strong for us. As a matter of fact we afterwards heard that the north-east part of the wood was held by two Battalions of the Third Prussian Guard Division and must simply have been swarming with them, so we could hardly expect to take it with three companies. Later in the morning we were told the Bosches must be cleared out at all costs, and we had to attack again at two o’clock, with the First Guards Brigade on our right. This was at 1.15, so there was not much time to arrange it, and I had the wind up as never before, feeling certain that it was impossible to take the place owing to the machine-guns which were supposed to be rushed with the bayonet, but which nobody really knew the whereabouts and number of. We lined along a summer ride and went over just at the tail end of a sleet-storm. There was a short and quite useless machine-gun barrage, no artillery. Just after we had gone over, Tyringham tried to stop us, as the Command realised the hopelessness of it, but it was then too late. F Company got ahead on the right and I heard a lot of firing. Sergeant Fotheringham, a chap I got the D.C.M. for at Ypres, was with me, and he kept bringing the men on in the most magnificent way, and he was wonderful from first to last, and if he had lived would have got a V.C. or bar to his D.C.M. When we got to the more open part of the wood I saw what had happened - just as I expected. Menzies, the Company Commander, and Sergeant Maclean with all the leading men of F Company had been laid out together trying to rush the machine-guns. At the same moment the two machine-guns slewed round on to us, and I realised that we were only about fifteen yards from one of them. Of course we flung ourselves down, Sergeant Fotheringham, a man called Grant - the same that was wounded at Neuve Chapelle - in F Company, and myself; and for the next twenty minutes there was nothing but a young oak-tree between us three and eternity. The machine-gun fired absolutely point blank, but could not quite reach us on account of the tree. Most of the platoon got down in a depression about twenty-five yards behind, but about eight men, including two Lewis Gunners, were almost up with us. These kept on firing for all they were worth, and the Lewis Gunners working their guns in the open until they were killed. Every man was killed one after the other, and Grant is the only man left alive besides myself. Then the Bosches started throwing phosphorous bombs at the dead and wounded, which set light to them and burnt them up. I thought I had seen most of the nasty things in this war, but this was the nastiest by a long way. By this time the rest of the men had retired, but we three were still lying behind the tree, unable to move an eyelid. However, after about twenty minutes the Germans got tired of shooting, and we decided to get away if possible one by one. Grant went first, and got across the open all right, though fired at from each side. Then Sergeant Fotheringham volunteered to try and get one of the Lewis guns away. He had his arm shattered at once, but managed to crawl back, only to die at the dressing-station. He was a great friend of mine and I feel his loss very much. I waited about five minutes and then did a lightning sprint on my stomach, and by all natural laws ought to have been hit - the bullets were knocking stones up into my face. However, I got back in the end. It was an experience I shall never wish to repeat, and it is no compensation for the loss of people like Menzies, and Sergeants Fotheringham and Maclean to know that what they were asked to do was absolutely impossible. It is little consolation even to know that the Corps General has been sent home.’ Sergeant James Fotheringham died of wounds on 26 November 1917, aged 27, husband of Hannah Matilda Fotheringham, of Caulfield Road, East Ham, London. He is buried in Orival Wood Cemetery, Flesquieres. One of only eight H.J. Mulliner Two-Door S3 Continental Coupés, finished in Pine Green and undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cars in the world. The Series 3 is perhaps the ultimate post-war Bentley in terms of appearance, performance and practicality, as well as the last medium sized Bentley to be offered with custom coachwork and H J Mulliner of Chiswick were responsible for some of the most iconic and beautiful coachwork designs on post-war Bentley chassis, especially the Continental variants. Their styling of the R-Type and S1 Continental fastback coupés evolved into the S2 Continental Coupé, with the final development being Design No. 2012: the S3 Continental Coupé. The car’s flowing lines were very similar to those of its predecessor, but Mulliner's third-generation Continental was produced in far fewer numbers, with just eight cars in right-hand drive and a further three in left-hand drive.Quad headlamps were the S3's major styling innovation and the indicators on the new models were incorporated into redesigned sidelights, positioned on the front of the wings. Headlamps aside, the most significant change was to the S3's engine, which boasted an increased compression ratio, larger carburettors and a Lucas vacuum-advance distributor, modifications that raised peak power by some 7%. The car’s power steering was further developed offering more feel in the straight ahead position but remaining light and user friendly when trying to ease this substantial automobile into a parking bay. A further minor change was the adoption of smaller bumper over-riders and a slightly reduced radiator height of about 1.5'', giving a sloping bonnet line and improving forward vision. Individual front seats and arm rests became a standard feature, and more powerful lighting and additional indication lights and switches on the instrument panel were introduced, presenting a far more modern feel to the last of the S-series Bentleys.Chassis number BC 88 XA is one of those original eight right-hand drive cars and is recorded as having been completed on 22nd February 1963 and supplied new by H.R. Owen of Mayfair to its first proud owner after being registered and taxed on 1st of March, 1963. It’s finished in a glorious shade of Pine Green with a single gold coach line over a magnificent tan leather interior. There is a fair amount of history with the car and a decent number of invoices for work completed between 1987 and 2005. A Minor Road Test and Workshop Mechanical Report was carried out for the car’s then owner, K.J.Riding Felce, by P&A Wood and their recommendations were carried out as confirmed by a 12-page invoice dated 7th July 1987 and totalling £11,374.27. This work was purely mechanical and system and accessory-related and didn’t involve any bodywork or trim. Further invoices detail servicing and maintenance and the work was always entrusted to well known Bentley specialists including P.J.Fischer, Jack Barclay, M.B.Jarvie, and Broughtons. We note that on 5th December 1988 the car was fitted with seatbelts and a car telephone at a cost of £1,064.33. Within the file there are a substantial number of previous MOT Certificates dating from December 1988 at 80,993 miles (registered 698 JGK and subsequently 1551 DM) up until late April 2010 at 91,313 miles (registered XMW 81A).There are a couple of Bills of Sale with the car indicating that it was purchased by Geoffrey Greenwood on 17th October 1988 for £85,000 and became the property of Dr James Hull on 26th October 2010 for £156,000. In common with the rest of Dr Hull’s extensive Collection, the Continental joined our vendor in 2014. The current indicated mileage is 91,335, meaning that this fabulous motor car has covered a mere 24 miles in the last 23 years so inevitably will need some commissioning before retuning to the road. One of only eight S3 Continentals by HJM, this is a rare car, in decent order, with a gorgeous interior and clothed in a coat of Pine Green so deep that you feel you could dive in. It’s a time capsule on wheels, a wonderful example of how brilliant British coachbuilding could be when talented young designers at James Young, Hooper, Park Ward, and Mulliners were given a box of sharp pencils and a free hand.We welcome and encourage you to come along to Sywell, sit in this elegant Bentley and be smitten.SpecificationMake: BENTLEYModel: S3 CONTINENTAL COUPEYear: 1963Chassis Number: BC 88 XARegistration Number: XMW 81ATransmission: AutoEngine Number: 87ABCDrive Side: Right-hand DriveMake: RHDInterior Colour: Tan LeatherClick here for more details and images

Delivered new to The Earl of Sefton, this stunning R-Type is bodied by E.D. Abbott of Farnham, Surrey in 'Continental' style. Only a handful of such were constructed, and offer stunning styling for a fraction of the cost of the celebrated Fastback Continental. In June 1952, Bentley’s new R-Type was presented to the public and it owed its name to the fact that the VI Series had, by this time, reached the chassis letter ‘R’. The new model continued to utilise the MkVI’s independent front suspension, hydraulic front brakes and six-cylinder, 'F-head' power unit, by now extended to 4,566cc. The standard R-Type was a lively performer, achieving 106mph in silence and reached 50mph from standstill in 10 seconds, despite a curb weight approaching two tonnes. As usual, the R-Type could be ordered in chassis form for bodying by specialist coachbuilders and this manual transmission example was the work of E.D. Abbott of Farnham, Surrey. The stylish, streamlined Continental-style fastback coupé coachwork, designed by Abbott's stylist Peter Woodgate, had been intended for the superseded MkVI chassis and bore more than a passing resemblance to H J Mulliner's contemporary Bentley Continental. After two prototypes had been completed, Abbott bodied 14 'production' cars, that offered here being the first. Of the remaining 13, one was fitted with automatic transmission and one was built with left-hand drive. We understand that B393SP, was sold new to The Earl of Sefton bodied in ‘Continental’ style by Abbott, as a two-door coupé in Ascot Grey.OYE 700 is accompanied by a fascinating history file which contains a list of previous owners which confirm that the car’s first owner was indeed the Rt. Hon. Earl of Sefton at Croxteth Hall. In 1968 it became the property of Richard Clover from Worcester and ten years later, it was registered to the Midland Record Company (Peter John Riley). Jeremy Pemberton of Yellowhammer PLC. acquired the Bentley in 1990 before selling it in 2004 to specialists dealers Frank Dale and Stepsons who, according to invoices in the file, carried out quite a lot of work on the car. A Michael Percival is listed as owning the car in 2004 with Eric Adkins in 2005 prior to Mr and Mrs Silverstone also in 2005. The famous car-collecting dentist, Dr James Hull added it to his Collection in late 2009 and, naturally, it moved to our vendor’s significant Collection around 2012 when Dr Hull sold everything. There are a number of older invoices with the car and it appears that by 1985, whilst in Peter Riley’s custodianship, the Bentley was looking a little sad. A.B.Price, Automobile Engineers of Studley provided an ‘Estimate’ dated 4th February 1985 for “Totally stripping coachwork, rebuilding corroded and damaged panelwork, re-cellulosing the car, replacing wood frame in body structure, completely refitting the interior woodwork and reassembling all fittings etc”. The estimate totalled £14,338. Invoices over the next 18 months totalling over £20,000 from A.B.Price detail the work completed and later invoices over the years from Frank Dale & Stepsons and Hillier Hill detail subsequent maintenance and repairs with the most recent one dated 8th October 2011 recording the odometer reading of 50,572 miles. The history file also contains a number of old V5s, a dozen older MOTs, lots of correspondence, the original ‘buff’ logbook, its R Type Bentley Handbook, an article by Bill Medcalf entitled 'R-Type Continentals' and a booklet called ‘Twenty Years of Crewe Bentleys’ . Additionally there is also a letter from Bentley confirming that they would like OYE 700 to be displayed at the factory as part of ‘The Bentley Experience’.The current indicated mileage is 50,893 meaning that the car has only covered just over 300 miles in the last dozen years, however, having been in two prominent collections this is not surprising. It has been looked after undoubtedly, and presents supremely with gleaming paintwork and a gently patinated interior with beige leather, excellent veneers and an unmarked Mulliner headlining. The engine bay is very tidy however as the car hasn't been used for a number of years. Some level of recommissioning is to be expected. This was the first of the Abbott-bodied cars and one can only imagine the sort of attention the 'swoopy' Continental bodywork would have generated back in 1954, matched only by the sort of admiration it would garner in 2023. We encourage you to view this remarkable piece of automotive art in the metal and appreciate the sheer quality on offer. SpecificationMake: BENTLEYModel: R-TYPEYear: 1954Chassis Number: B393SPRegistration Number: OYE 700Transmission: ManualEngine Number: B446SDrive Side: Right-hand DriveMake: RHDInterior Colour: BeigeClick here for more details and images
