Scottish. Victorian Black Watch Officer's feather bonnet.A rare example attributed to Major N.A. Baillie-Hamilton who saw service in South Africa during the Boer War. The bonnet is of of dyed Ostrich feathers of regimental pattern with four tails. Velvet edged diced band of regimental pattern bearing black silk rosette with gilt Sphinx resting on a tablet inscribed "Egypt". To the rear of the bonnet two silk tails. Red leather sweatband topped with cotton. Complete with black patent leather chin strap and scarlet cut feather hackle. GC, some service wear. Housed in original large japanned storage tin bearing painted name "N.A. Baille Hamilton The Black Watch. (2 items)Major N.A. Baillie-Hamilton served with the Regiment during the Boer War and at the outbreak of the Great War was serving as a Captain and Adjutant at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst and is famously pictured with the Hockey Team of E Company 1915, of which he was an instructor. Half the team would loose their lives during the Great War. In 1915, whilst on leave the Major with a fellow instructor travelled to France to see the war for themselves. Remaining with the Regiment after the end of the Great War, he served in Iraq, gaining the General Service Medal and in 1925 he was serving as Depot Commander a post he held until 1928.
