The sitter was the daughter of Jeremiah Ives of Norwich and married in 1781 William Drake, MP for Amersham.The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which is unlined. The canvas tension is slightly slack, but the picture is in plane. The paint layers are in a stable condition overall. The varnish layer is thick, glossy and yellowed. There are localised areas of overpaint visible under ultraviolet light. It is unclear if some elements of the composition have been reworked, this requires further investigation.Framed 90 x 77cm

An important George III mahogany, tulipwood, harewood, ebony, purplewood, rosewood and fruitwood inlaid, marquetry and parquetry architectural tea caddy attributed to William Potter of Cornhill, London Circa 1785 Inlaid in the form of a Georgian house, the front and reverse each centred by steps leading to a portico with Ionic columns, the raised hinged lid comprised of inlaid overlapping lozenges within three tablets, the roundel inset with a compass star within an eared quarter veneered cartouche with foliate angles, the reverse of the lid inlaid with two end tablets each inlaid with a conforming compass star flanking a central rosette, with a chequered border and a Greek key pattern surround, enclosing a divided mahogany interior with three hinged lidded and lead-lined canisters, each canister lid inlaid with two lozenge tablets flanking a central tablet, the two end lids each inlaid with a patera-inset roundel and the central lid with the Royal crown, on a plinth base, the underside of the canisters inscribed respectively from left to right: 'L', 'M' and 'R' 25.5cm wide, 12.5cm deep, 16.5cm high (10in wide, 4 1/2in deep, 6in high) Footnotes: The fashion for tea caddies and other boxes in the form of houses or other decorative buildings emerged in the last quarter of the 18th century and continued into the 19th century. The early caddies featured fine marquetry and parquetry inlaid decoration including a plethora of timbers and great attention was paid to architectural detailing including windows, mouldings, brickwork and rustic quoins. The majority of these caddies were made in the form of generic Palladian villas and imposing townhouses but it is possible that some specific commissions copied the exteriors of their owners own residences. Of this small group of caddies, the most famous and well documented example is an extraordinarily fine and rare caddy dating from 1786 modelled on Carlton House which was the then London home of the Prince Regent. Designed by the architect Henry Holland, the house was constructed in 1783 and demolished in 1826. The caddy was made by the cabinet maker William Potter of Cornhill and was sent by its maker to George III for his inspection. It was then subsequently raffled with fifty subscribers paying two guineas each. The subscribers included prominent aristocrats and figures of the day including Prince Augustus Frederick, the Dukes of York, Queensberry and Cornwall and Lady Elizabeth Foster together with Lord Nelson's mistress Lady Hamilton. However, ironically the caddy was won by Potter himself who had purchased several tickets. Now in the collection of the Museum of London (A7547/1), it features particularly fine inner tea cannisters which were also are inlaid with architectural detail and windows so that when they are removed from the caddy they become subsidiary pavilions flanking the main house. This caddy also features fully signed inset mother of pearl discs bearing Potters name and the date of manufacture, presumably as a form of self promotion. The offered lot can be attributed to William Potter by way of comparison to the Museum of London example due the stylistic similarities of its design and the fineness of its construction. Interestingly, although the exterior of the three inner cannisters are plainer than the two inner cannisters of the Museum of London example, the central cannister features a crown motif to its lid suggesting that it may have been commissioned from Potter by an aristocratic supporter of George III or perhaps even a member of the Royal Family in homage to the monarch. A comparable caddy, almost certainly also by Potter, was sold by Sothebys, London, Important English Furniture (including the Robert Harman collection of late 18th and early 19th century tea caddies), 12 November 1999, lot 40. ‘I hear the well worthy and faithful Admiral Nelson happily arrived….’             1149    FERDINAND I: (1751-1825) King of the Two Sicilies 1816-25 (upon his restoration following victory in the Napoleonic Wars) and previously, as Ferdinand IV, King of Naples 1759-99, 1799-1806, 1815-16 and, as Ferdinand III, King of Sicily 1759-1816. A fine A.L.S., Ferdinand D[e] B[ourbon], one page, 4to, Palermo, 27th June 1799, to an unidentified correspondent [Sir John Acton?], in Italian. The King informs his correspondent that a frigate has arrived from Naples with an 'inexpressible consolation', continuing 'I hear the well worthy and faithful Admiral Nelson happily arrived with his crew. I have read the statement that he sent you in the form of observations, which could not be more wise, reasoned and adapted to effect and truly evangelical. I have no doubt that you will have immediately complied with it, otherwise it would have been the same as declaring yourself a rebel too, which is never possible after so many reproaches in the past given me of fidelity and attachment'. With blank integral leaf. A letter of good content for its reference to Lord Nelson. VG Sir John Acton (1736-1811) French-born English Admiral who served as Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Naples under Ferdinand IV during the turbulent times when French Revolutionary fervour under Napoleon was sweeping across Europe and threatening to extinguish the monarchy he served.  Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) British Vice-Admiral who achieved a number of decisive naval victories during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.  Nelson's victory at the Battle of the Nile in August 1798 had extinguished French naval power in the Mediterranean, thereby saving the Kingdom of Naples from naval conquest by Revolutionary France. However, this did not prevent the French armies entering the north of Italy and achieving some successes. In response, and on the orders of Nelson, in December 1798 King Ferdinand, Queen Maria Carolina, Sir John Acton, Sir William Hamilton (and his wife, Emma Hamilton, Nelson's mistress) were evacuated from Naples and taken on board HMS Vanguard to the Sicilian capital of Palermo. Freed of the royal presence, during the first months of 1799, the Neapolitan citizens and aristocracy sympathetic to the ideals of the French Revolution promptly established the short-lived Parthenopean Republic with the help of the French and an uprising of the classes who had supported King Ferdinand was violently suppressed. Nevertheless the monarchy was restored in Naples five months later when Cardinal Fabrizio Ruffo, with the King's permission and support of Nelson, led the 20,000 strong Calabrian army ('Sanfedisti') against the French occupation. Acton re-established order in Naples with the creation of the Junta of State, a reign of terror during which many prominent citizens were imprisoned or executed. King Ferdinand rewarded Nelson's services by granting him a title of Sicilian nobility, Duke of Bronte, which he accepted without his own King's approval.

NESSELRODE KARL: (1780-1862) Russian diplomat who served as Foreign Minister of the Russian Empire from 1816-56. A.L.S., Nesselrode, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d. ('Samedi matin'; 15th October 1853), to Sir Hamilton [Seymour], in French. Nesselrode writes to complete the information which he gave to his correspondent yesterday, and informs Seymour that 'nous avons recu hier au soir la declaration de guerre.......et la sommation adressee au Pr. Gortichakoff' (Translation: 'we received yesterday evening the declaration of war…..and the summons addressed to Pr. Gortichakoff'). With blank integral leaf (a few very small, minor areas of paper loss to the edge). VGSir George Hamilton Seymour (1797-1880) British diplomat who served as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary at the Court of St Petersburgh 1851-54.Alexander Gorchakov (1798-1883) Russian Prince, diplomat and statesman who served as Foreign Minister of the Russian Empire 1856-82. Nesselrode's letter is written just one day before the commencement of the Crimean War, a three-year conflict between Russia and the ultimately victorious alliance of the Ottoman Empire, France, the United Kingdom and Sardinia-Piedmont.

AEROSMITH: A printed folio concert programme from Aerosmith's Nine Lives Tour (1997-99) individually signed by all five members of the American rock band comprising Steven Tyler, Tom Hamilton, Joey Kramer, Joe Perry and Brad Whitford, four of the band members signing to clear areas above and below a colour image depicting them standing together in three-quarter length poses and Hamilton signing to the inside back cover opposite. ELGIN EARL OF: (1766-1841) English nobleman, soldier, politician and diplomat, known for his controversial procurement of marble sculptures (the Elgin Marbles) from the Parthenon on the Acropolis of Athens. A.L.S., Lord Elgin, in the third person, one page, 8vom Broomhall (Fife, Scotland), 1st January 1822, to Mr. Beloc (?). Elgin states that he would be obliged to his correspondent if they were to send 'to Mr Hamilton of the Foreign Office, another copy of the list of members of the Travellers Club', adding that he believes Hamilton is still at Southampton. Accompanied by an A.N.S. by Beloc (?), one page, oblong 8vo, n.p., n.d., stating, in full, 'Is the autograph of that devastator and spoliator of the Parthenon the celebrated Elgin worthy (of) a place in your collection'. Addressed to the verso to J. Potter Esq. Some very light, minor age wear, about VG, 2The Travellers Club is the oldest of the surviving Pall Mall clubs in London, and one of the most exclusive. The private gentlemen's club, whose membership largely consists of diplomats and travellers, was established in 1819.

‘Letters….from Soult have been intercepted from which it appears that the officer is most extremely apprehensive of an immediate attack from Lord Wellington’ [NAPOLEONIC WARS]: DISBROWE EDWARD CROMWELL (1790-1851) British politician and diplomat attached to Sir Charles Stuart during the Peninsular War. A.L.S., with his initials ECD, three pages, folio, Frankfurt, 9th November 1813, to Sir Charles Stuart. The informative letter is Disbrowe's retained draft copy of a letter containing intelligence reports and states, in part, 'The Head Quarters have remained here since last Friday. The reserve of the army is concentrated in this neighbourhood. Count Walmoden (sic) was still in the vicinity of Domitz on the 2nd watching Marshal Davoust who it is reported has since retired into Holland. The Crown Prince of Sweden is marching on Hanover but he has detached Bulow……Marshal Blucher was at Limbourg yesterday & is advancing in the direction of Cologne. Marshal Schwartzenberg (sic) left this place today in order to drive the French out of Hochheim where their only Corps on this side of the Rhine is stationed. It is probable that Bonaparte did not cross that river with more than 50,000 men & according to some accounts his force did not exceed 35,000……Genl. Wade took about 7,000 prisoners…….the brunt of the affair fell on Bonaparte's old Guard which has suffered most considerably & they were certainly the finest Corps he had. He remained a day & an half here during the whole time the Armies were fighting across the river for the possession of the bridge……By intercepted letters it appears that nearly 150,000 conscripts out of the 280,000…..(are)….at the Central Depot. So that something must be done on this side immediately, but unfortunately we have so many Commanders-in-Chief that in proportion as the manoeuvres become complicated & require decision we shall probably vacillate, for besides 2 Emperors & a King we may reckon Marshals Schwartzenberg & Blucher, the Crown Prince of Sweden, Genls. Barclay de Tolly & Benningsen (sic) among that number. Letters….from Soult have been intercepted from which it appears that the officer is most extremely apprehensive of an immediate attack from Lord Wellington & he ends by saying that the longer it is delayed the less apprehensive he shall be of the result. Letters from those quarters make great complaints of the exactions & contributions Soult has levied in France. A report from Bon. Thuyunot (sic; Baron Thouvenot) Comte of Bayonne mentions “that those inhabitants who had fled in consequence of the advance of the English have returned to their habitations relying on a promise of good treatment which he adds that they certainly have met with a circumstance likely to prove very favourable to the English in case they invade France & recommends the adoption of some measures to compel the inhabitants to fly”. The communication with Ld. Wellington by spies which you hinted at in a letter to me…….has been adopted, with what success I do not know'. In a postscript Disbrowe further writes, in part, 'Witgenstein (sic) continues to watch…..Benningsen who has been joined by the Garrison of Theresienstadt (i.e. Terezin) & has undertaken the siege of Dresden….Stettin & Wittenberg will probably very soon fall…..' and also makes reference to Lord Aberdeen and others who are presently in Frankfurt. A letter of interesting content, rich in its references to various individuals and places associated with the Napoleonic Wars. * DAVID MCLEOD MARTIN RSW RGI (SCOTTISH 1922 - 2018), YELLOW ROSE AND POPPIES oil on canvas, signed, dated 2000 and titled label verso framed image size 61cm x 51cm, overall size 78cm x 68cm Label verso: The Open Eye Gallery, Edinburgh.Note: David McLeod Martin was born in Glasgow in 1922. He studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1940 to 1942 before serving in India with the Royal Air Force between 1942 and 1946. He returned to Glasgow School of Art in 1946 where he studied under David Donaldson and met his future wife, the painter Isobel Smith. After graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 1948 he pursued a career in teaching. He married Isobel in 1949 and moved to Eaglesham where he lived for the rest of his life. He was elected a member of the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts in 1959 and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1961. Between 1973 and his retirement in 1983, David Martin was Principal Teacher of Art at Hamilton Grammar School. After his retirement from teaching he concentrated full time on his painting. Numerous highly successful solo shows in London were to follow and he continued to enjoy commercial success and critical acclaim both at home and throughout the UK for the rest of his life. David Martin was widely regarded as one of the finest still life and landscape painters of his generation and his work is held in numerous public, corporate and notable private collections including The Arts Council of Scotland, The City of Edinburgh Art Collection, Perth Museum and Art Gallery, The Dick Institute, Kilmarnock, Robert Fleming and Company Ltd, Linklaters and Paine, Lord MacFarlane, The Earl of Moray, Credit Lyonnais Bank, Warburg Asset Management and the Clydesdale Bank. A major retrospective of his work was held at Perth Museum and Art Gallery in 1999 and the influential Lemon Street Gallery (Truro) staged a major solo exhibition of his work in October and November 2018.

She has exhibited with the Royal Glasgow Institute, the Royal Scottish Academy and various galleries, including the Wren Gallery in the Cotswolds. Linda Clark has won the Lauder Award for landscape painting from the Glasgow Society of Women Artists. She received the “Plein Air” Award from Paisley Art Institute. She has received the Constance Hamilton Award from the Glasgow Southern Art Club. She has exhibited many times with the Torrance Gallery in Edinburgh. She has had solo shows in the RGI Kelly Gallery, the Wren Gallery and the Torrance Gallery.

* JOYCE W CAIRNS PPRSA DEd (hc) HRA (2018-2022) HRHA HRWA HRBA RSW MA (RCA) (SCOTTISH b. 1947), HOMESICK watercolour on paper, signed and dated 1975framed and under glassimage size 49cm x 69cm, overall size 59cm x 79cm Provenance: authenticated by the artist (02.05.23) and although untitled, Ms Cairns suggested "Homesick" as at the time (1975) she was in London and missing her homeland. This is a rare early work by one of Scotland's most significant and critically acclaimed artists of her generation.Note: In 2018 Joyce W Cairns was elected the first woman President of The Royal Scottish Academy in its 192 year history. Given the extraordinary talent of many Scottish women artists both past and present, this honour reflects the high esteem of the Royal Academicians who elected her and her status as one of the most important and respected artists of her time. Note 2: Joyce W Cairns was born and brought up in Edinburgh. She studied painting at Grays School of Art, Aberdeen from 1966 -71 and The Royal College of Art, London 1971 -74. She was awarded a Fellowship at Gloucester College of Art and Design 1974-75 returning to London where she did the Art Teacher’s Certificate Course at Goldsmiths College, University of London 1975-76. In 1976 she returned to Aberdeen where she taught Drawing and Painting at Grays School of Art until 2004 when she took early retirement to complete the vast body of work which culminated in ‘War Tourist’. It was exhibited for 3 months in 2006 at Aberdeen Art Gallery, attracting nearly 30,000 visitors. Her work is mainly autobiographical based on past memories intertwined with present experiences, woven around the backcloth of the once fishing village of Footdee at the mouth of Aberdeen harbour where she has lived for the past 33 years. ‘War Tourist’ was based on her Father’s war backed up by extensive research following in his footsteps through Europe and Tunisia. She now paints in Dundee working in a house and garden overlooking the Tay which will add a further dimension to her work but still retains a residence in Footdee. Cairns has won many awards and is featured in many publications and in the wider media. Cairns’ work has been exhibited in serious group exhibitions since 1970, as well as having numerous celebrated solo exhibitions in Scotland, London and Canada.
