Lot 391

Registration No: C389 FAH Frame No: JH2RC200XGM203014 MOT: July 2025Shaft drive DOHC 16 valve 700ccPresented in an authentic and original trimSupplied with US Title and a current V5CThe Honda Motor Company was founded by Soichiro Honda in 1937 and made their first motorcycle in 1949, within 10 years becoming the biggest motorcycle manufacturer in the world. They have gone on to produce over 400 million two-wheelers as well as millions of other power products. The legendary CB750/4 was launched in 1969 to great acclaim and laid down the blueprint for the modern-day superbike, beginning a range of SOHC Honda fours ranging from 350cc upwards. By the 1980s the engines now sported double overhead cams with 4 valves per cylinder. The Nighthawk 700 was a model developed especially for the US market to avoid import tariffs designed to protect Harley Davidson and was based on the 16 valve CBX750 more commonly available in Europe. This bike looks to have been imported into the UK in 1997 and is presented in an authentic and original condition, still fitted with its very typical of the period Black chrome 4 into 2 exhaust system. A good-looking bike with its all-Black engine and Honda US racing-style Blue, White and Red colour scheme, it comes supplied with its US Title and a V5C. Although it passed an MOT in July, the vendor has recommended that the bike be recommissioned before use as he is unsure of its history.. Lot 255

Registration No: YLK 46G Frame No: 6T 32699 MOT: ExemptThe perfect combination of the best of Norton and TriumphSlimline Featherbed with a single carb Triumph 650cc engineIdeal winter project, supplied with old MOTs and a current V5COne of the classic symbols of the 1960s heyday of British motorcycling is the Triton, a perfect blend of the legendary Norton featherbed frame and the Triumph 650 twin engine. The 'cafe racer' style is still popular with most modern-day manufacturers including one in their range. Unfortunately, the original Norton engines were not as reliable so an obvious answer was to replace them with the stronger and more readily available Triumph 650 twin, starting a whole cottage industry in handmade specials. This Triton is the classic combination of a Norton slimline featherbed frame, Norton Roadholder forks and an alloy head Triumph 650 6T engine. Put together by the vendor about 15 years ago, it is fitted with alloy rims, Dunlop TT100s, Triumph twin-leading shoe front brake, Norton rear brake, single sports seat, rear-set footrest, clip-on handlebars, alloy central oil tank and a bespoke alloy fuel tank adapted from a Harley Davidson custom bike with a flush fitting filler cap. The engine was overhauled at the time, with the crank professionally balanced to 85%. The bike has not been used for a while due to ill-health but will make an ideal winter restoration project with all the major 'cafe racer' items in place. The engine turns over with compression and it comes supplied with a few old MOTs and a current V5C. For more information, please contact: Ian Cunningham ian.cunningham@handh.co.uk 07415 871189

Lot 280

Registration No: Unregistered Frame No: Not visible MOT: NoneA striking one-off creationAir-ride suspension fittedSubject to much expense on the buildHarley Davidson was established in Milwaukee in 1903 and has gone on to become one of the world's most iconic and longest-running motorcycle manufacturers. Harleys epitomise large-capacity cruisers; many have tried to copy them but have never managed to match the Harley image and prestige. This Harley Davidson custom creation was carried out by the previous owner at great expense and has been a 'show bike' in his office. The frame is of all-steel tubing and custom-built and is fitted with a very impressive 330-section rear tyre and with long rack forks. It has been fitted with air ride suspension with lots of one-off billet components. The tank is all handmade from steel and expertly welded together. It is not known when the work was carried out on the Harley. This custom machine has been used mainly as a display piece and has been on display with the current owner since it was purchased. The Harley is up and running, and the sound from this machine is very impressive. There is a video on file with the air ride working as it should. It has never been registered since completion and will need the usual checks and registration processes completed before placing it back on the road.

1988 Yamaha XV535. Registration number E981 PMG. Frame number 2YL 003939. Engine number 2YL 003939. Sold with V5C and key. The XV535 Virago is where Yamaha started giving Harley-Davidson a run for their money: it was the first of their cruiser motorcycles and it certainly lasted well. It is unique in being one of the few smaller cruiser-style motorcycles available with a shaft drive instead of a chain or belt final drive system, as well as a V-twin engine of that size. Its heavily chromed body styling is also distinctive. The model was discontinued in 2003 the "star" range of motorcycles form took over as the cruiser line from Yamaha. PMG is a three owner low mileage machine that was last MOT'd in 2022, the current mileage is 17,625. It will need recommissioning before road use.

Lot 465

1976 Aermacchi Harley Davidson SS125, 125cc. Registration Number PWR175P, Frame Number 6F61231H6, Engine Number Y7608163. Sold with Key, V5, original service manual. Currently SORN, and taxation class can now be changed to Historic Status when transferred to buyer to allow free tax and exemption from MOT. Following stiff competition from Japanese manufacturers, and a shift in the young rider market to small, fun bikes rather than the traditional heavyweight V Twin models, the AMF corporation imported and marketed several lightweight motorcycles under the Harley Davidson banner. This model, the SS125, was made by Italian aircraft manufacturer Aermacchi, and sold between 1975 and 1977. It featured a 13bhp single cylinder two stroke engine and 12 volt electrics, and went well as it was not a restricted model. PWR has been with our vendor since 2019, having only one previous recorded keeper. It kicked up first time and rode well around the car park on test, and our vendor states it would make a reliable classic for regular use.

1976 Honda GL1000 Gold WingRegistration no. OMY 62RFrame no. GL1-2033656Engine no. GL1E-2032875In a world grown accustomed to an excess of decadence on all fronts, it is hard to imagine the mixture of awe and disbelief that greeted the Honda Gold Wing on its arrival in 1974. 'Motorcycle or sci-fi fantasy?' was Bike magazine's reaction. 'Quite simply the most advanced motorcycle ever made,' was Honda's preferred description, and given the mind-boggling specification: 1,000cc flat-four engine, water cooling, belt-driven overhead camshafts, shaft drive, triple disc brakes, etc, it was certainly complex if not, strictly speaking, that advanced. One of the fastest production motorcycles of its day, the Gold Wing was described in Honda's Stateside ads as 'the epitome of what touring is all about' and proved eminently capable of taking sales from both BMW and Harley-Davidson. As owners began to fit more and more accessories - including trailers the size of small caravans - engine capacity was increased first to 1,100cc and then to 1,200cc to cope with the increasing demands for more power. Over the years the 'Wing has continued to grow in engine capacity, overall size and complexity, which only serves to underline the increasingly collectible original's purity of form. This early example comes with documentation including parts invoices from David Silver Spares; various services invoices; the purchase receipt (dated 2018); a V5C Registration Certificate; and a quantity of tax reminders. Keys present.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.REQUEST A TRANSPORT QUOTEPlease click the link to request a transport quote from our recommended transport company, Moving Motorcycles. To request a UK or European shipping quote - Moving MotorcyclesTo request an International shipping quote - ShippioThis Lot will be auctioned on Sunday 13 October starting at 11am GMT.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1933 Harley-Davidson 1,200cc VLERegistration no. 526 YUSFrame no. 33VLE1772Engine no. 33VLE1772The sidevalve Harley-Davidson Model V 'Big Twin' was announced in July 1929 as a 1930 model, replacing the inlet-over-exhaust 'pocket valve' twins in production since 1911. The twin headlamps, round toolbox and Klaxon horn were carried over from 1929, but nearly all of the rest of the bike was new. The VL was the high-compression model in the series. This Harley-Davidson VLE is being offered for sale by Neil Ridgewell of 'Made in Italy Motorcycles' as part of his personal collection. The machine was acquired by Neil in 2015 from marque specialist Steve Slocombe of 'VL Heaven' in Folkestone, Kent. The Harley was imported into the UK by Steve Slocombe and restored in 2011/2012. The machine was submitted for AMCA judging in 2013, scoring 96.25 points out of a possible 100, and was last run in May/June 2024. It has covered only some 50-or-so miles since Neil's purchase and otherwise has been kept dry-stored within his personal collection. The machine is offered with a current V5C document; W-D Harley-Davidson inspection paperwork; AMCA judging form; VL Heaven Steve Slocombe rebuild details; various other pieces of VL Heaven correspondence; a Rider's Handbook; some marque-related literature; and a small quantity of spares.Offered with keyFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.REQUEST A TRANSPORT QUOTEPlease click the link to request a transport quote from our recommended transport company, Moving Motorcycles. To request a UK or European shipping quote - Moving MotorcyclesTo request an International shipping quote - ShippioThis Lot will be auctioned on Sunday 13 October starting at 11am GMT.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 287

Property of a deceased's estate 1928 Brough Superior '1,134cc' SS100 Alpine Grand Sport Registration no. YV 5550 Frame no. 969 Engine no. JTO/C 2945/T •The most desirable of Vintage-era motorcycles •Present ownership since 1982 •Matching numbers •Little used during the present ownership Legendary superbike of motorcycling's between-the-wars 'Golden Age', Brough Superior – 'The Rolls-Royce of Motorcycles' - was synonymous with high performance, engineering excellence and quality of finish. That such a formidable reputation was forged by a motorcycle constructed almost entirely from bought-in components says much for the publicity skills of George Brough. But if ever a machine was more than the sum of its parts, it was the Brough Superior. W E Brough's machines had been innovative and well engineered, and his son's continued the family tradition but with an added ingredient - style. The very first Brough Superior MkI of 1919 featured a saddle tank - an innovation not adopted by the rest of the British industry until 1928 - and the latter's broad-nosed, wedge-profiled outline would be a hallmark of the Nottingham-built machines from then on. Always the perfectionist, Brough bought only the best available components for his bikes, reasoning that if the product was right, a lofty price tag would be no handicap. And in the 'Roaring Twenties' there were sufficient wealthy connoisseurs around to prove him right. One such was T E Lawrence – 'Lawrence of Arabia' – who owned several Broughs and was critically injured whilst riding an SS100. Introduced in 1922, the JAP-powered SS80 achieved instant fame when a racing version ridden by George became the first sidevalve-engined machine to lap Brooklands at over 100mph. With the new SS80's performance threatening to put the overhead-valve MkI in the shade, it was decided to completely redesign the latter. The result was the legendary SS100. First shown to the public in 1924, the SS100 employed an entirely new overhead-valve 980cc JAP v-twin engine. A frame of duplex cradle type was devised for the newcomer, which soon after its launch became available with the distinctive, Harley-Davidson-influenced, Castle front fork patented by George Brough and Harold 'Oily' Karslake. And just in case prospective customers had any doubts about the SS100's performance, each machine came with a written guarantee that it had been timed at over 100mph for a quarter of a mile - a staggering achievement at a time when very few road vehicles of any sort were capable of reaching three-figure speeds. With this level of performance available in road trim, it was only to be expected that the SS100 would make an impact on the racetrack, particularly the ultra-fast Brooklands oval, and the exploits of Brough Superior riders - among them Le Vack, Temple, Baragwanath, Fernihough and Pope - did much to burnish the marque's image. When Brooklands closed forever at the outbreak of WW2, Noel Pope's Brough Superior held both the sidecar and solo lap records, the latter at an average speed of 124.51mph. Success in an altogether different branch of motorcycle sport resulted in one of Brough's most iconic models: the SS100 'Alpine Grand Sports' or 'AGS'. Introduced in September 1925 for the 1926 season, this new machine took its name from the Austrian Alpine Trial, the 1925 event having been contested by a number of SS100s, one ridden by George Brough himself, resulting in the award of six cups, including one for 'Best Performance'. The introduction of the Alpine Grand Sports coincided with that of a new frame for the SS100, and the AGS came as standard with a lower compression ratio (making it more suitable for touring), a small fly-screen and a pair of tool boxes. Brough entered the 1930s with an entirely JAP-powered range and then in 1936 the SS100 was redesigned with an engine built by Associated Motor Cycles, in which form it continued until production ceased in 1939. Lighter and faster than the subsequent Matchless-engined version, the JAP-powered SS100 has long been regarded as the ultimate incarnation of this famous model. Perhaps every enthusiast's and collector's dream is to find a hidden gem in a barn or garage, and what we have here is perhaps one of the most exciting of them all: a Brough Superior SS100. Hidden away by its secretive owner, this example had not seen the light of day for decades until it was recently disinterred from its resting place (the last tax disc expired in 1978). Once the tyres had been inflated, the Brough gracefully rolled out of the garage, ready for a new owner to enjoy. But what is also amazing about 'YV 5550' is that not only is it a matching-numbers example of one of the most desirable motorcycles ever, but it also has a full and fascinating history. The copy Works Record Card confirms that the SS100 retains its original frame, engine and fuel tank no. 1901 (nb the frame number was initially stamped with the first '9' upside down before being corrected at the factory). Its specification included a Binks twin-float carburettor, Lucas magdyno, Klaxon horn, Pilgrim oil pump, two prop-stands, Terry saddle, and plated mudguards with black centres. The first owner of this exceptional machine was Shell Mex Ltd, the registered keeper being one Malcolm Vincent Ambler, Chief Motor Engineer at Shell Marketing Ltd. Presumably, the machine was his 'company vehicle,' or perhaps it was used for marketing and promotional purposes. This remains unclear; however, in 1931 the Brough was resold to P Platts in Manchester, probably the motorcycle dealer Percy Platts of Oldham, Manchester. The Brough Superior Club also records the Oldham-based daredevil speedway rider, trade unionist and Communist Party member Clem Beckett (1906-1937) as another owner of 'YV 5550' (Platts garage was located on the same stretch of road as Beckett's garage). Beckett gained fame in speedway, winning the Golden Helmet at Owlerton Stadium, and founded the Dirt Track Riders' Association to help protect riders' rights. A committed communist and anti-fascist, Beckett volunteered for the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War, where he served as a machine gunner. He was killed in the Battle of Jarama in 1937 while covering his comrades' retreat. Another interesting former owner is one Harry Biggs, who is referenced in a 1955 article in The Motor Cycle about 'YV 5550' entitled 'A Brough Day in the Hills.' The then-owner was Harry Muckalt, while the author of the article, and Muckalt's sidecar passenger, was R D Humber (copy article on file). In the very first paragraph, it states 'YV 5550' had been the property of Harold 'Harry' Biggs – qualified engineer, tuner, and Brooklands competitor on various makes - who worked for Duzmo, Alfa Romeo British Sales, JAP, Frazer Nash, Automobile Supertuners, and Marshall Superchargers among others. While with Supertuners he worked on one of Sir Henry Segrave's 2-litre Sunbeams. Biggs had commenced his career in the tuning department of G H Tucker, the Bristol-based Norton specialist, and in a 1942 article in Motor Sport magazine, Biggs recalled that Tucker had received one of the first SS100 Brough Superiors.  For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1992 Harley-Davidson 1,200cc XLH SportsterRegistration no. J799 DYAFrame no. 1HD1CAP16NY116052Engine no. CAPN116052First registered in the UK in January 1992, this XLH Sportster has belonged to the lady vendor (the second owner) since its purchase in 1995. In 2000 the Harley was customised, receiving a 'solid' rear wheel, new rear mudguard, Screaming Eagle exhausts, design mirrors, and paintwork by 'Born to be Wild'. The original peanut tank, spoked rear wheel, rear mudguard, air filter assembly, and a set of 'blue dot' indicator covers/tail light assembly are included in the sale, enabling the machine to be returned to original specification if so desired. The vendor rode around 50,000 miles on this much loved Sportster up to 2013 when it was SORN'd until 2017. The last six years have seen the Harley used less frequently on account of the vendor's advancing age; it has, however, continued to be garaged and maintained. Reluctantly hanging up her motorcycling gear, our vendor hopes the Sportster will be ridden and loved by the next owner. Also included in the sale are two sets of leather saddlebags, three leather tool rolls, a tall cissy bar, a King & Queen seat, Owner's Manual, and other service manuals. MoT'd to 30th June 2025, the machine comes with a V5C document.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.REQUEST A TRANSPORT QUOTEPlease click the link to request a transport quote from our recommended transport company, Moving Motorcycles. To request a UK or European shipping quote - Moving MotorcyclesTo request an International shipping quote - ShippioThis Lot will be auctioned on Sunday 13 October starting at 11am GMT.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

2010 Harley-Davidson 1585cc FLHRC Road King ClassicRegistration no. HD55 USAFrame no. *5HD1FR4C9AB670171*Engine no. *FR4A670171*Once Harley's V-twins began to get larger, the company played into this more and more, and with the introduction of the overhead-valve 1200 FL series in 1941, touring was destined to play a major part in Harley's future. Touring FLs were integral to the range up to the present day; landmark models such as the Electra Glide playing a role, with engines changing over the decades. By 2010, tourers such as this FLHRC Road King Classic were equipped with all the bells and whistles, and powered by the new generation of 96 cu. in. (1585cc) Twin Cam engine. HD55 USA was purchased by the owner in August 2011 (purchase invoice on file). At its next service, in July 2012, the mileage was 2072. Serviced again, and MoT'd in August 2014, the mileage had increased to 2889. Thereafter, the mileage covered between MoTs appears to be only that needed for the test itself. It was last MoT'd in August 2024, and the present mileage is 3,006. It has been kept in a very good environment throughout, and the present excellent condition is commensurate with that low mileage and careful storage. It is equipped with panniers, and all the accoutrements one would expect on such a high-spec. model. It has also been set up with the aid of a dynamometer, and is ready for use by a new owner. A duplicate V5C has been applied for, and should be in place by the time of sale. Other documents comprise some expired MoT certificates, the aforementioned service invoices and purchase invoice, the owner's manual, and sundry papers. The bike is presently on SORN.Offered with keyFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.REQUEST A TRANSPORT QUOTEPlease click the link to request a transport quote from our recommended transport company, Moving Motorcycles. To request a UK or European shipping quote - Moving MotorcyclesTo request an International shipping quote - ShippioThis Lot will be auctioned on Sunday 13 October starting at 11am GMT.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

2001 Honda 499cc CB500SRegistration no. OU51 MWNFrame no. ZDCPC32E0 YF322835Engine no. PC26E2507853This Honda CB500S was purchased in August 2011 in Staffordshire as a lighter alternative to the lady vendor's Harley Davidson Sportster (also in this sale). According to our vendor, the Honda has proved to be a reliable and faultless bike: easy, comfortable and uncomplicated to ride both in traffic and on tour. The vendor rode the Honda regularly until November 2019, covering a trouble-free 5,500 miles in that time. Described by her as 'a great middleweight machine', the Honda has always been garaged. The after-market, street legal Beowulf exhaust is said to emit a very pleasing tone, while the machine also boasts a Scottoiler, bespoke luggage rack, fabric panniers, and an expandable top bag. Sadly, our vendor's age has forced her to give up riding, but she feels that this versatile Honda, with only 13,430 miles recorded, deserves to motor on. Accompanying documentation consists of a current V5C Registration Certificate, MoT to 17th January 2025, Honda warranty and service booklet, and Beowulf silencer lifetime guarantee paperwork. The original exhaust system is included in the sale.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.REQUEST A TRANSPORT QUOTEPlease click the link to request a transport quote from our recommended transport company, Moving Motorcycles. To request a UK or European shipping quote - Moving MotorcyclesTo request an International shipping quote - ShippioThis Lot will be auctioned on Sunday 13 October starting at 11am GMT.Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1963 Aermacchi Harley Davidson 246cc Ala VerdeRegistration no. YNF 161AFrame no. AERDAV250N*221552*Engine no. 250N *221552*As with other Italian motorcycle manufacturers, Aermacchi began as aircraft manufacturers – Aeronautico Macchi being shortened to Aermacchi – they turned to motorcycles in 1950 when Lino Tonti designed their first bike. They remained independent only until 1960 when Harley Davidson purchased a 50 percent share in the Aermacchi motorcycle division. The horizontally-slung engine became a marque trademark, and most of their output had this configuration, which created a low centre of gravity and made for a well-cooled engine unit. YNF 161A was purchased by the owner in May 2012. Whilst some work had already been done by the previous owner, the machine was in need of cosmetic attention. He therefore stripped and repainted the cycle parts, reassembled it, checking and rectifying any problems found along the way. The engine was found to be in sound order, and the bike started, ran, and drove well. He had no intention of using the Aermacchi for nighttime riding, so whilst he fitted lights to the machine, they are not wired up, and merely in place to retain the lines of the machine. He has had daytime MoTs for the bike (certificates on file), and there are some electrical components to accompany it. Since completion, the vendor has used the bike occasionally for limited mileage most years. It comes with a pair of small side trim panels. A new battery and light re-commissioning will be required prior to use by a new owner. Documentation comprises a current V5C, an old VE60 log book, the aforementioned expired MoT certificates, a copy owner's handbook, and purchase receipt.Key not requiredFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.REQUEST A TRANSPORT QUOTEPlease click the link to request a transport quote from our recommended transport company, Moving Motorcycles. To request a UK or European shipping quote - Moving MotorcyclesTo request an International shipping quote - ShippioThis Lot will be auctioned on Sunday 13 October starting at 11am GMT.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

H449 TUYFrame no. 1HD1EML17MY116772Engine no. *EMLM116772*This Low Rider Convertible (the convertible aspect relates to city or country riding), was purchased new by the vendor in 1991, from Motex, and was supplied with the following factory fitted extras:- Screaming Eagle cam, ignition unit, and silencers, smooth bore Mikuni carburettor, and solid rear wheel. The owner later fitted stainless steel spokes to the front wheel, changed the rear chainguard, side covers and fuel cap for chrome items, and removed the screen. The original camshaft, carburettor, ignition unit, silencers, rear chainguard, side covers, fuel cap, screen, spokes, and factory-supplied soft panniers all accompany the bike, together with an after-market Le Pera single seat.H449 TUY was used regularly by the vendor most years, but only in Summer months, for limited mileage. The mileage from new was only 11,012 at the time of consignment. It has been regularly serviced by the fastidious owner, who is a trained mechanic with a lifetime of experience. It is obvious to the most casual observer that this machine has been cosseted by the careful custodian. Having covered less miles in recent years, the vendor has regretfully concluded that it is time for the Harley to pass on to another, who can exercise her a little more regularly. An opportunity to acquire a one owner, low mileage, Harley Davidson Low Rider, ready to use and enjoy. It should be noted that this machine is not the Dyna-framed model, which was introduced in 1991. Documentation comprises a current V5C, original sales brochure, current MoT certificate (expiring 6th May 2025), a factory workshop manual, old Mot certificates, and sundry papers. Two ignition keys present, but no steering lock key.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.REQUEST A TRANSPORT QUOTEPlease click the link to request a transport quote from our recommended transport company, Moving Motorcycles. To request a UK or European shipping quote - Moving MotorcyclesTo request an International shipping quote - ShippioThis Lot will be auctioned on Sunday 13 October starting at 11am GMT.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 306

1912 Indian Model D 7hp TwinRegistration no. BF 5973Engine no. 80D793•Restored in the USA•Purchased by Vic Norman in 2007•Many-time Pioneer Run participant•Requires recommissioningOscar Hedstrom and Oliver Hendee, both active in the cycle racing world, got together to found the Hendee Manufacturing Company and build the first prototype Indian motorcycle in 1901. That first machine was powered by a single-cylinder, 'F-head' (inlet over exhaust) engine that formed part of the 'diamond' frame, in the Indian's case it sloped rearwards to act as the seat tube. An advanced feature in motorcycling's early, pioneering days, chain drive was used by Indian right from the start. The Indian single proved immensely successful and provided the basis for the first of the powerful, large-capacity v-twins for which the marque is best remembered. Indian's first, 38.61cu in (633cc) v-twin appeared in 1907 with an engine clearly derived from that of the single, though mechanical inlet valves - introduced for 1908 - were an early improvement. The twin's rear cylinder continued to form part of the frame until 1909 when a loop frame of the type favoured by rivals Harley-Davidson was adopted. The Springfield firm's first 'Big Twin' debuted that same year displacing 60.32cu in (988cc). At the end of 1915 the Big Twin, by this time equipped with 61cu in (998cc) engine, leaf-sprung frame and three-speed countershaft gearbox, was superseded by a new 'flat head' v-twin - the Powerplus - thus bringing to an end a noble line. This Big Twin dates from 1912, a year in which Indian sales benefited considerably from the firm's famous 1-2-3 finish at the 1911 Isle of Man TT, a remarkable achievement made possible by the advantages conferred by the use of all-chain drive. Vic Norman purchased the Indian from Bonhams' 2007 Legend of the Motorcycle Sale, (Lot 33). At that time the motorcycle was described as follows: 'Acquired by the vendor in 1988 from Beamont, CA, the machine had been kept in storage in the immediately preceding owner's house since 1955 and thus has enjoyed only two owners in the past 52 years. Between 2000 and 2007 it was restored to 'better than new' condition by the vendor, an enthusiast with many years experience of Indian motorcycles and numerous awards to his credit. Not started since completion, this superbly restored Big Twin is offered with California Certificate of Title.'Since Vic Norman's purchase in 2007, the motorcycle has benefited from the manufacture and installation of new steering head bearings (see correspondence on file) and has been campaigned by Vic on numerous Sunbeam Motor Cycle Club Pioneer Runs. The machine has now acquired a very nice patina having been put to work as its maker intended; indeed, Vic's natural ability to master all things mechanical has transformed this Indian from a concours display piece to a living, breathing piece of motorcycling Americana.Unused in recent years due to Vic's advancing years, countless other projects and the change in the Sunbeam Motor Cycle Club's Pioneer Run 'finish' from Madeira Drive in Brighton to Shoreham airport, the Indian will require careful recommissioning before returning to the road. A most substantial file of documents comes with it, including the all-important Sunbeam MCC Pioneer Certificate. It should be noted that Indian motorcycles of this period did not have frame numbers; however, the machine has been fitted with a frame number plaque (No. 80D793) for UK registration purposes.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.REQUEST A TRANSPORT QUOTEPlease click the link to request a transport quote from our recommended transport company, Moving Motorcycles. To request a UK or European shipping quote - Moving MotorcyclesTo request an International shipping quote - ShippioThis Lot will be auctioned on Sunday 13 October starting at 11am GMT.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
