A Regency pedal harp, by J. Erat, Wardour Street, London, early 19th century, with 43 strings and five swell doors to the gilt foliate decorated faux rosewood grained sound box, the fluted column with Egyptian term and ram’s head festoon swag capital, the base with eight brass pedals and on paw feet, numbered 606 to signature plate, (losses to gesso, action appears complete but requires restoration) 171cm high, 78cm wide. Provenance: Purchased by the private vendor from the sale of ‘The Mickleburgh Collection of Mechanical Music, Musical Instruments and related’, Bristol Auction Rooms, 24th June 2003, lot 103. Jacob Erat left the firm of Sebastian Erard (where he was previously foreman) around 1800 and set up in his own name working from Wardour Street, London. By 1820 by the firm was run by his two sons, he died in 1821. Condition Report:** Marks, scratches and abrasions consistent with age and use. Old closed splits. Chips to gilding and paint. Some regilding and repainting. Requires re-stringing. Brassware tarnished.Losses to composition decoration. No guarantee pedals operate as require some attention.
A Meissen porcelain group, of a lady harpist seated before her elaborate instrument, her companion holding the music score from which she reads, a small boy behind the couple plays the flute, raised on an elaborate reticulated oval base, crossed swords mark, impressed 95 and 163, incised D78, 19th century, the harp`s strings lacking, a chip to the stump at the back, 19.5cm. Provenance: Collection of Professor R C Cookson, 1922-2008.
