THE PROPERTY OF A GENTLEMAN A VERY RARE 30 BORE ENGLISH BREECH-LOADING FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOL BY T. HADLEY, HALESOWEN, CIRCA 1660 with tapering turn-off smooth-bored barrel formed in two stages, with a pronounced ring at the muzzle and chiselled with a band of foliage ahead of the rear section, octagonal then polygonal breech engraved with a female mask on the left (two further masks no longer visible), long rectangular tang decorated with scrolling foliage and flowers on a hatched ground, rounded lock retained by two side nails, engraved with a symmetrical bouquet on the tail, signed 'T Hadley De Halesowen' (indistinct), fitted with separate pan, chiselled lock and steel each decorated with scrolls, figured walnut full stock moulded about the lock, tang and side-plate (bruises, repaired beneath the lock, chipped behind the tail, later fore-stock), engraved iron mounts comprising trigger-plate decorated with geometric designs, trigger-guard chiselled with a Roman warrior mask, spurred oval pommel decorated with scrolling foliage, and differing expanded flowerheads, and the side-plate formed of a brass panel pierced and engraved with flowers, foliage and a pair of addorsed female figures (the iron parts with areas of pitting) 27.5 cm; 10 7/8 in barrel Provenance William Goodwin Renwick, sold Sotheby's12th November 1973, lot 69 Christie's 16th December 2003, lot 196 Literature Brian Godwin, An early and rare English breech-loading Pistol from the Midlands by Thomas Hadley, pp. 289-303, in The Journal of the Arms and Armour Society, volume XXII, No. 6, September 2018. The barrel is locked by a retracting bolt, operated by the trigger, emerging from an iron plate ahead of the lock acting on a further iron plate on the rear of the fore-stock. This system is employed by other gunmakers of the period such as Harman Barne and Jonadab Holloway. See Hayward 1962, p. 294, ill 52c and Neal 1984, p. 109 and p. 130. It has been suggested that the barrel was original rifled though there is no evidence to support this. Halestown lies between Kidderminster and Stourbridge, south of Dudley. Gunmaking, including barrel and lock production, is recorded in this area during the English Civil Wars of 1642-51. See Godwin, op. cit. Very few pistols of this type remain extant.

‡ A FINE GREEK DECORATED SILVER-GILT HOLSTER FOR A PAIR OF KUBUR PISTOLS, EARLY 19TH CENTURY the outer face covered with red velvet faced with a pierced and chased silver-gilt panel decorated with a symmetrical design of scrolling tendrils, flowers and foliage enclosing a central architectural panel 30.5 cm; 12 in Openwork designs of this type were popular on domestic items made in the Ionian Islands and are also encountered on firearms such as blunderbusses. ‡ A RARE OTTOMAN OVER-AND-UNDER FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOL COMBINED WITH A DAGGER, TURKEY, EARLY 19TH CENTURY with tapering two-stage barrels decorated with gold koftgari trophies, scrolls, foliage and the spurious inscription 'London' over the breeches, iron lock signed and decorated in gold koftgari en suite, incorporating sliding upper pan, engraved white metal butt forming the dagger hilt, and with concealed blade decorated with gold koftgari scrollwork at the base 47.5 cm; 18 ¾ in Provenance The property of a religious institution, sold Sotheby's, 18th December 1979, lot 316 Another dagger of this form was given by Ali Pasha to Elmas Aga Metsio Bono. Elmas Bey took part in a shooting competition with Byron in Albania in 1809. In 1821 he commanded one thousand five hundred Albanian troops besieged by the Greeks in Tripolitsa and negotiated their escape when the town fell. A related example is preserved in the Museum Narodowego, Cracow. See Elgood 2009, p. 224 and p. 329 no. 283 and the same author 1995, p.49.

‡ A FINE PAIR OF 20 BORE GREEK FLINTLOCK HOLSTER (KUBUR) PISTOLS, BOKA KOTORSKA, DATED 1829 with tapering barrels inlaid with silver scrollwork over the moulded breeches, one signed, each retained by chased gilt-brass muzzle bands decorated with foliage in relief against a punched ground, including an exotic bird feeding on a flower's nectar, all enriched with a niello framework and incorporating the fore-sights, the tangs overlaid with silver gilt plaques and incorporating the back-sights, dated beveled locks engraved with foliage, full silver gilt metal stocks cast and chased with flowers, foliage fruit and trophies-of-arms en suite with the muzzle bands, slender butts enriched with spiraling bands, trigger-guards en suite, and simulated ramrods, together with a matching iron ramrod with characteristic silver gilt and niello terminal en suite with the pistols, the iron portion acting as a sheath for a pair of long tweezers, and in very good condition throughout: in a modern padded blue case with trade label for Asprey & Co 27.0 cm; 10 5/8 in barrels (2) A strikingly similar pair of pistols, preserved in the Benaki Museum, Athens, are attributed to the ownership of Petros Mauromichales (1765-1848), better known as Petrobey and chief of tribes in the Mani mountains in Southern Greece. ‡ A 15 BORE OTTOMAN LONG FLINTLOCK HOLSTER (KUBUR) PISTOL, BALKANS, LATE 18TH/EARLY 19TH CENTURY, PERHAPS PRIZREN OR PEC with Italian early 18th-century barrel, chiselled and gilt at the breech with flowers and foliage and struck with the gold-lined barrelsmith's marks, the muzzle sheathed in gilt copper chased with traditional scrollwork and incorporating the fore-sight, bevelled lock encrusted with gold scrollwork, the lower edge with a brief gold inlaid Turkish inscription, full stock encased in silver gilt decorated en suite with the muzzle sheath, silver spurred pommel, trigger-guard and false ramrod 38.2 cm; 15 in barrel The lock inscription reads, 'amel-i ahmed sahib isma'il aða' ("Work of Ahmed, the owner Isma'il Agha"). In the first half of the 19th century large quantities of pistols were manufactured in Prizren (now a Kosovan city and district) for export to Turkey, Egypt, Asia Minor, Persia, Arabia and India. It is believed that they were exchanged for leather and gold, in some instance the weight of a pistol was set against the weight of gold paid. See Elgood 2009, p. 190, nos. 242, 243.
