HADLEY, HALESOWEN, CIRCA 1660 with tapering turn-off smooth-bored barrel formed in two stages, with a pronounced ring at the muzzle and chiselled with a band of foliage ahead of the rear section, octagonal then polygonal breech engraved with a female mask on the left (two further masks no longer visible), long rectangular tang decorated with scrolling foliage and flowers on a hatched ground, rounded lock retained by two side nails, engraved with a symmetrical bouquet on the tail, signed 'T Hadley De Halesowen' (indistinct), fitted with separate pan, chiselled lock and steel each decorated with scrolls, figured walnut full stock moulded about the lock, tang and side-plate (bruises, repaired beneath the lock, chipped behind the tail, later fore-stock), engraved iron mounts comprising trigger-plate decorated with geometric designs, trigger-guard chiselled with a Roman warrior mask, spurred oval pommel decorated with scrolling foliage, and differing expanded flowerheads, and the side-plate formed of a brass panel pierced and engraved with flowers, foliage and a pair of addorsed female figures (the iron parts with areas of pitting) 27.5 cm; 10 7/8 in barrel Provenance William Goodwin Renwick, sold Sotheby's12th November 1973, lot 69 Christie's 16th December 2003, lot 196 Literature Brian Godwin, An early and rare English breech-loading Pistol from the Midlands by Thomas Hadley, pp. 289-303, in The Journal of the Arms and Armour Society, volume XXII, No. 6, September 2018. The barrel is locked by a retracting bolt, operated by the trigger, emerging from an iron plate ahead of the lock acting on a further iron plate on the rear of the fore-stock. This system is employed by other gunmakers of the period such as Harman Barne and Jonadab Holloway. See Hayward 1962, p. 294, ill 52c and Neal 1984, p. 109 and p. 130. It has been suggested that the barrel was original rifled though there is no evidence to support this. Halestown lies between Kidderminster and Stourbridge, south of Dudley. Gunmaking, including barrel and lock production, is recorded in this area during the English Civil Wars of 1642-51. See Godwin, op. cit. Very few pistols of this type remain extant.

Elmas Bey took part in a shooting competition with Byron in Albania in 1809. In 1821 he commanded one thousand five hundred Albanian troops besieged by the Greeks in Tripolitsa and negotiated their escape when the town fell. A related example is preserved in the Museum Narodowego, Cracow. See Elgood 2009, p. 224 and p. 329 no. 283 and the same author 1995, p.49.

‡ A 15 BORE OTTOMAN LONG FLINTLOCK HOLSTER (KUBUR) PISTOL, BALKANS, LATE 18TH/EARLY 19TH CENTURY, PERHAPS PRIZREN OR PEC with Italian early 18th-century barrel, chiselled and gilt at the breech with flowers and foliage and struck with the gold-lined barrelsmith's marks, the muzzle sheathed in gilt copper chased with traditional scrollwork and incorporating the fore-sight, bevelled lock encrusted with gold scrollwork, the lower edge with a brief gold inlaid Turkish inscription, full stock encased in silver gilt decorated en suite with the muzzle sheath, silver spurred pommel, trigger-guard and false ramrod 38.2 cm; 15 in barrel The lock inscription reads, 'amel-i ahmed sahib isma'il aða' ("Work of Ahmed, the owner Isma'il Agha"). In the first half of the 19th century large quantities of pistols were manufactured in Prizren (now a Kosovan city and district) for export to Turkey, Egypt, Asia Minor, Persia, Arabia and India. It is believed that they were exchanged for leather and gold, in some instance the weight of a pistol was set against the weight of gold paid. See Elgood 2009, p. 190, nos. 242, 243.

‡ A FINE PAIR OF 32 BORE SILVER-MOUNTED CAUCASIAN MIQUELET-LOCK HOLSTER PISTOLS, DAGHESTAN, THIRD QUARTER OF THE 19TH CENTURY with chiselled barrels encrusted with silver scrollwork and with a gold band at the breeches, three silver barrel bands chased with panels of flowers heightened with niello, silver-encrusted locks, the mainsprings each with two calligraphic cartouches, the stocks entirely encased in silver decorated with chased and nielloed patterns of flowers and scrollwork, the pommels en suite, button triggers also encrusted in silver and with no provision for a ramrod, in their exotic hardwood case lined in padded blue velvet (lid partly detached, cracks and small chips), the lid with brass carrying handle and with an early letter of provenance 31.0 cm; 12 ¼ in barrels Provenance Christie's, 29th October 1980, lot 201 The letter, and accompanying translation, read: ' La Canée le 2 Avril 1877, Cher Monsieur Mickshe, Mon Aide de Camp Ahmed Bey a été chargé de vous remettre une paire de pistolets anciens Turque produit de l'industrie de Daghistan. Je vous prie de vouloir bien faire parvenir ces armes à votre fils Monsieur Arthur en le priant de daigner accepter ce modique présent comme un souvenir de l'amitié sincère que je nourris envers lui.
