Edward Hopper (American, 1882-1967)Night in the Park (Zigrosser 20; Levin 80) Etching, 1921, a fine atmospheric impression, on Umbria paper with partial watermark, signed in pencil, framedPlate 172 x 210mm (6 3/4 x 8 1/4in)Sheet 328 x 395mm (12 7/8 x 15 1/2in)Footnotes:Edward Hopper is admired for his atmospheric and enigmatic depictions of life during the American Depression and particularly well known for his urban scenes of New York. The majority of these scenes depict buildings and streets devoid of people, or perhaps with one solitary figure. In contrast to his contemporaries who were depicting the crowds and bustle of cities, he chose to focus on quiet reflective moments such as a man reading a newspaper in Central Park. There is a stillness and melancholy to the image which conveys a sense of isolation. Hopper infuses it with drama through the play of light and shadow, with the solitary figure highlighted under the street lamp. The diagonal created by the row of benches draws the eye into the picture to the spotlit figure who is turned away from view, emphasizing the sense of alienation which can be experienced in a big city.Having trained as a commercial illustrator and painter, Hopper was meticulous in his execution and he printed the etchings himself to ensure the perfect result was achieved. His technique and choice of subject matter grasped the public's imagination and although the success of his paintings eclipsed that of his printmaking, the etchings are considered as masterpieces of modern American printmaking. As the New Yorker art critic, Peter Schjeldahl, succinctly put it, Hopper 'leaves us alone with our own solitude, taking our breath away and not giving it back...Once you've seen a Hopper, it stays seen, lodged in your mind's eye'For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

HIGH SOCIETY BLUESOne-Sheet (28" x 41"); Tim Matheson CollectionVery Fine on Linen Fox, 1930This one sheet, featuring images of Gaynor and Farrell, is an Art Deco masterpiece, perfectly capturing the era that it represents. It evokes both the wealth and power of the prosperous and privileged, as well as the wholesome romance between the two stars (a romance that not so wholesomely continued into the actor's private lives, according to those who knew them well). On any number of levels, this is a rare gem, spotlighting one of Hollywood's greatest talents, and is sure to be the envy of anyone who sees it. A poster with a clean and bright image that presents perfectly with restoration and airbrushing sporadically to the borders, especially the lower and upper left due to a tear, also lightly to the fold wear, and one clean V-shaped tear in the center background.During the 1930s, the decade in which the Great Depression ravaged not only the United States but the world at large, movies about the monied elite and their adventures and misadventures navigating the perils and pitfalls of high society were all the rage, as audiences wanted to experience vicariously the fantasy of living the life of the wealthy for themselves. Based on the short story "Those High Society Blues" by Dana Burnet that first appeared in the Saturday Evening Post in 1925, this was one of twelve films that featured Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrel; Seventh Heaven (1927), Street Angel (1928), and the F.W. Murnau classic, Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927), all featuring the famous couple. Also appearing in this film is actress and infamous gossip columnist Hedda Hopper, who had a relatively unremarkable career on the screen but became one of the most influential people in Hollywood thanks to her column, "Hedda Hopper's Hollywood" in the Los Angeles Times. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. EASY RIDEROne-Sheet (27" x 41")Very Fine- on Linen Columbia, R-1972Rarely is a reissue poster more highly treasured than the original, but this is one such example. In the 1969 campaign, the studio chose to play down the "biker flick" theme, with only a daydreaming Peter Fonda in profile, no motorcycle in sight. As the film was a chopper-thundering success, when paper for the re-release was launched in 1972, the studio showed no further hesitation, capitalizing on the famous image of Fonda and Dennis Hopper rollin' down the highway.Prior to linen backing, the poster was folded. There are touchups to the borders and along the fold lines. The poster is now quite presentable.Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda gave the US '60s counterculture its cinematic voice with this low-budget road movie about a pair of bikers roaring across the American Southwest and South. Significant success with younger audiences sparked the "New Hollywood" movement of the 1970s.This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 7th.
EASY RIDEROne Sheet (27" x 40.5")Fine+ on Linen Columbia, 1969This revolutionary movie was released with three different style posters. The A and C styles were identical except for the top tagline, while style B was a review sheet. This fetching style A has the famous tagline, "A man went looking for America. And couldn't find it anywhere."The entire upper yellow field of this poster on linen has been airbrushed. There have also been slight pencil touch-ups to the fold lines, but the poster displays nicely.Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda gave the US '60s counterculture its cinematic voice with this low-budget road movie about a pair of bikers roaring across the American Southwest and South. Early pencil sketch attributed to American artist Jon Carsman. Sketch depicts a street scene with four figures walking towards the viewer, a fallen child, and large street signs. Signed Carsman and dated by artist on lower right. Canvas border with unfinished wood frame. Jon Carsman was known for colorful screen print works, which utilized highly saturated color blocks and deep contrasting shadows. His works often depicted quiet suburban landscapes in a style reminiscent of Edward Hopper. His works can be found in many public collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Tragically, Jon Carsman was one of the many artists whose life was claimed during the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s. This sketch would have been created when he was twenty-four years old. Sight size: 15.5"W x 19.5"H; frame: 16.75"W x 20.75"H x 1.25"D. Artist: Jon CarsmanIssued: 1968
