The British Horseracing Authority Sale of Racing Colours: BLACK, WHITE hoop, WHITE cap. What is being offered here is the opportunity to register a BHA standard set of racing colours. These are similar to colours that were registered by Lord Derby (the 14th Earl) in the Racing Calendar as his Second Colours between 1854 and 1868.The British Horseracing Authority Sale of Racing Colours.Lots 228 to 235.What is being sold is a right: the right to register the colours in Britain for use on the racecourse, such that, should the registrant own a runner in a horse race, the rider whom he/she engages to ride the horse may don the registered colours. (In the very unlikely event that two registrants with similar colours each have a horse running in the same race, one rider may be asked to wear a distinguishing cap). One need not be a racehorse owner to register colours. Indeed many colours are registered to non-owners, who perhaps intend to own a horse at a later date or pass the right to register the colours to their children. All colours are sold as described and the buyer is purchasing the right to register these colours in accordance with the Rules of Racing. The successful bid price will include a registration period according to the price sold (see below).Less than £10,000: 1 year.£10,000 - £20,000: 5 years.More than £20,000: 10 years. Please note that if the purchaser fails to formally register the colours with the British Horseracing Authority, via Weatherbys within one year of the auction date the purchaser runs the risk of losing the right to register them. The name of the registrant will be published on the Racing Administration website upon registration. Please note that the hammer price for all lots is subject to the auctioneer’s buyer’s premium of 24%. VAT is only payable on the auctioneer’s buyer’s premium. If you have any queries regarding the registration of Racing Colours please contact Registrations at Weatherbys on 01933 440077 or Registrations@weatherbys.co.uk who will be happy to assist.

A set of racing silks and a personal archive relating to Mr John Ismay of the White Star Line (Titanic) Family and owner of the champion racehorse Santa Claus, the racing silks with a green cap bearing a label for L J Watkins, 77/78 Dame Street, Dublin, the black jacket with a gold six-pointed star, and green hooped sleeves; sold together with a leather trunk containing an extensive personal archive mostly relating to Mr John Ismay's extensive business interests, but also his racing and bloodstock activities as well as personal items including his spectacles, (a qty.).Santa Claus was the outstanding racehorse of 1964 winning the Irish 2,000 Guineas and the Epsom and Irish Derby's. The colt had advertised his ability as a two-year-old when winning Ireland's prestigious 2-y-o race the National Stakes by 8 lengths. He was trained at the Curragh Stables of Mick Rogers, having been bought by John Ismay with the advice of Mrs Darby Rogers, Mick's mother. For the avoidance of doubt, this particular set of Mr Ismay's silks is not the one worn during the English and Irish Derby wins as photos show the jacket had a five-pointed star.Santa Claus's victory in the 1964 Derby was the second time that a racehorse owned by the Ismay family had crossed the finishing line first in the Blue Riband of the Turf; the previous time had been in 1913 when the Titanic survivor Charles Bower Ismay's racehorse Craganour won the race. This was one of the famous renewals and became known as the Suffragette Derby, after the Votes for Women campaigner Emily Davison dashed out to her death in front of the King's horse Anmer at Tattneham Corner. In a second twist of high drama Mr Ismay's horse was disqualified by the Epsom Stewards citing inteference with the second-placed horse Aboyeur. This controversial decision is widely regarded to have been a reaction to society criticism of Ismay who had boarded one of the insufficient number of Titanic lifeboats. Mud seemingly had stuck to Ismay Family, Charles being the younger brother of J. Bruce Ismay, Managing Director of the White Star Line.

For further information on Ray Goddard and the collection see lot 144.Green Desert was an American-bred bay colt foaled in 1983 by Danzig out of Foreign Courier (Sir Ivor). He was owned by Maktoum Al Maktoum and trained at Newmarket by Michael Stoute. As a two-year-old the colt won the July Stakes and the Gimcrack Stakes both over 6f. He was campaigned as a guineas/mile horse at three but found great success when reverted to sprint racing winning the July Cup and the Sprint Cup at Haydock Park. He was retired at the end of the season. At Stud, Green Desert sired many top-class sprinters including Sheikh Albadou, Owington, Tamarisk, Invincible Spirit, Desert Lord, Oasis Dream and Markab. In classic races he sired Desert Prince (Irish 2,000 Guineas) and Rose Gypsy (Poule d’Essai des Pouliches).
