Peter Barrett (B. 1935) "Sporting Horses - Steeplechase" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 29c Steeplechase Stamp issued May 1, 1993. The term "steeplechase" originated in 18th-century Ireland when fox hunters held impromptu races marked by "yon church steeple" -- usually the only towering landmark on the Irish countryside. A point-to-point race of this nature was typically won by following the shortest course -- which often involved jumping fence after fence to reach the church steeple. Today's version of the steeplechase is confined to a smaller area along a designated course strewn with obstacles such as hedges, walls or hurdles. The most desirable horses are mature animals that possess the stamina needed to successfully compete on this grueling course. Racing beyond the age of 10 is not uncommon in this sport, and half-breed horses that are not pure Thoroughbreds -- often make fine steeplechasers. The most famous steeplechase is the Grand National held in Aintree, near Liverpool, England. This annual event covers a distance of over four miles and contains 30 hurdles to challenge both rider and horse. Europe also holds two other noted races, the Irish Grand National and the Grand Steeplechase de Paris. In the U.S., the Maryland Hunt Cup has been run over natural hunting grounds in Glyndon, Maryland, since 1894. This steeplechase race reputedly has the biggest timber obstacles -- some as high as four feet, 10 inches -- and each must be quickly negotiated to win the coveted silver cup award. Image Size: 14 x 11.75 in. Overall Size: 17.5 x 15 in. Unframed. (B14210)
