Lot 39

Lazaro Pardo de Lago (Cuzco, Viceroyalty of Peru, Active between 1630 - 1660)."Appearance of Christ and the Virgin Mary surrounded by angels to Saint Francis, in the Porziuncola Chapel of Santa Maria degli Angeli, in Assisi"Oil on copper. Handwritten in golden letters at the bottom margin: "Jubileo o Indulgencia de Porciuncula" (Jubilee or Indulgence of Porziuncola).29 x 22.5 cm.This painting is undoubtedly the work of Maestro Pardo de Lago. In our opinion, it can be compared to Lázaro Pardo's "Exaltation of the Cross," which is kept in the Pedro de Osma Museum in Cuzco, Peru. Additionally, the delicate features of the Virgin Mary's face and hands in this painting can also be compared to the painting of the "Immaculate Conception" also kept in the Pedro de Osma Museum. It is worth noting that themes dedicated to such an important episode in the life of Saint Francis were significant references for Pardo de Lago due to his strong connection with the Order.Another important noticeable element in this painting is the heraldic shield seen on the altar, which belongs to the Chaves family. Originating from Extremadura, with roots in Portugal and ancestral properties in Trujillo and Ciudad Rodrigo, this family also had a branch that moved to Peru. They proved their nobility in the Orders of Santiago, Calatrava, Alcántara, Charles III, and the Knights Hospitallar.Their coat of arms consists of a gules field with five gold keys arranged in a cross with their eyes looking downward. There is also a bordure (border) of gules with gold saltires alternating with the quinas of Portugal. This wonderful painting portrays the moment of the apparition when Saint Francis asked the Lord to grant an indulgence to all who visited the church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, under the title of Maria degli Angeli. The Lord accepted this request and instructed Saint Francis to go to Perugia to obtain the desired favour from Pope Honorius II. The Holy Father granted this indulgence in 1216.This indulgence is still granted today if, between August 1st and 2nd, one visits any chapel in a Franciscan convent and receives "the grace of Porziuncola, where complete forgiveness is obtained, and peace with God is established."Saint Francis of Assisi had a "great desire for the salvation of all souls," and that the faithful, with piety and devotion, would receive the indulgence by fulfilling the Church's provisions. As cited by the Real Academia de la Historia (Royal Academy of History), Lázaro Pardo de Lago was a: "Painter, gilder, and Creole or mestizo sculptor, who ranks among the first important masters who worked in the ancient Inca capital. His work was primarily linked to the Franciscan Order, and his more personal style appears to echo early Hispanic naturalism, blending the observation of immediate reality with refined formal stylisation. In 1630, Pardo painted, at the request of the Franciscan monastery of Cuzco, two large canvases depicting the Franciscan martyrs of Japan, which can be considered his masterpieces. Both scenes reveal a painter of exceptional quality, judging by the meticulous precision of his work, the luminous colour, and the strongly characterised heads of some martyrs. Deploying ingenious local expressive resources, Pardo depicted the Asian friars with features similar to those of mestizos or the mixed Hispanic and indigenous people of his time.Furthermore, Lázaro Pardo was one of the first Cuzco artists who used engravings by Peter Paul Rubens and his school as a starting point for his compositions. An example of this is the Assumption of the Virgin, executed in 1632 by order of the parish of San Cristóbal, based on a homonymous work engraved by Cornelis Galle, following the original design by Rubens. His workshop must have been one of the largest in Cuzco during his time."The coat of arms which appears on the altarpiece is the heraldic shield of the Chaves family. They came from the Extremadura province of Spain, and were originally from Portugal with ancestral properties in Trujillo and Ciudad Rodrigo. One branch settled in Peru. Their nobility was verified by the Orders of Santiago, Calatrava, Alcántara, Charles III, and the Knights Hospitallar.Arms: In the gules field are five golden keys placed saltirewise with their eyes downward; there is a bordure of gules, full of gold saltires alternating with the quincunx of Portugal.Reference bibliography:- Real Academia de la Historia. (s.f.). "Lázaro Pardo Lago". https://dbe.rah.es/biografias/70955/lazaro-pardo-lagoThis lot has been imported, therefore its exportation permit from the Ministry of Culture is guaranteed.

1973 Triumph Stag Transmission: automaticMileage:75929Like the Triumph 2000 it was developed from, the Stag was styled by Italian maestro Giovanni Michelotti and featured the monocoque construction, independent suspension, disc/drum brakes, power-assisted rack and pinion steering and driveline of that saloon. The powerplant, though, was an all-new OHC, V8 of 3000cc capacity fed by a pair of Stromberg carburettors. The newcomer received a warm reception at the time of launch in 1970. However, once in the hands of customers there were quibbles over build quality and engine maladies. Although Triumph itself failed to fully resolve the issues, independent specialists have, and well sorted Stags are now the rival to the Mercedes-Benz SL they were always intended to be.Originally registered on 27th September 1973, this Triumph is finished in Inca Yellow with a contrasting dark brown interior with tan piping and a dark brown mohair soft top. Subject to a comprehensive restoration this Stag benefits from excellent paintwork and interior. The significant history folder confirms an expenditure of over £8,000 with the car having covered less than 100 miles since then. To be expected after such a level of spend, we are advised the car drives with no known faults, the automatic transmission operating as it should with smooth gearchanges. Also benefitting from power steering this Triumph Stag is a perfectly useable example. Supplied with a V5C registration document and a current MoT test certificate valid until 20th February 2024, this is a delightful example for a relatively modest outlay.

Lot 229

1970 Volvo 1800E Coupé Transmission: manualMileage:15845With truly international credentials, this modern departure from Volvo's standard fare was planned in Sweden, built both in the UK and Sweden but designed by a Swede working at Carrozzeria Frua in Italy. Given the streamlined and elegant lines that adorn this model, it was produced both as a two-door coupé and latterly as a shooting brake. Initially marketed as a P1800S, the 'S' standing for Sweden, the power output was increased in 1970 with the addition of Bosch fuel injection hence P1800E, the 'E' standing for Einspritzung, the German for fuel injection allowing for a top speed of, incredibly for the time, 118mph.Supplied in Inca yellow with a contrasting black leatherette trim, the quality here is clear to see. Maintenance has been relentless over the years with very little reference to cost. As a result, the history file is extensive with numerous invoices, old MoT test certificates, original owners handbook and detailed information including engine-rebuilds, fuel systems overhaul, much additional mechanical work with, in 2016, all sills and outriggers replaced with a CD detailing works done including paint. With only 58 P1800E models registered with the DVLA (of which 32 are declared SORN), this is a rare car, even more so in this outstanding condition and they are quickly rising in popularity as a great 70's icon. There is little wonder why this was the motorcar of choice by the most elegant of detectives, Simon Templar himself, in the long-running TV show, The Saint.

Memoirs of a Captivity among the Indians of North America from Childhood to the Age of Nineteen. With anecdotes descriptive of their manners and customs. To which is added, some account of the soil, climate and vegetable productions of the territory Westward of the Mississippi. A New edition, with portrait. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees [&c.], 1823. 8vo, lithographed portrait frontispiece, 4pp. advertisements at beginning, engraved bookplate of Sir William Middleton Bart., of Shrubland Park, original boards, uncut, paper label to spineNote: Note: The third edition of John D. Hunter's Memoirs of a Captivity was published in 1824, so this 'new edition' would appear to be the second edition. This copy contains the rare lithographed frontispiece by C.R. Leslie printed by Hullmandel, which was not present in the copy examined for the Wagner-Camp entry, or in the Library of Congress copy. Wagner-Camp notes that "Hunter's autobiography includes his story of a journey across the mountains to the Pacific Ocean, `on the south side of the Chok-a-li-lum (Columbia River)'." Wagner doubted the veracity of this account, although he accepted Hunter's description of life among the Kansas and Osage Indians as authentic. He claimed to have been abducted at an early age by Kickapoo Indians, but escaped to white settlements to get an education. He visited London where he was lionised in 1823-34 and then returned to America where he was murdered by Cherokees.

Cressy-Marcks was elected to the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) in 1922, described by her proposer as of independent means, already having "travelled extensively" from Alaska to Java and having made private "explorations in Tibet, Kashmiri etc."[3] Violet Cressy-Marcks' journeys took her round the world many times. Though twice married, she principally travelled alone. Her extensive interests encompassed archaeology, zoology, ethnology and geography. Eventually credited with travelling in every country of the world, she was keen to have a scientific grounding to her travels, and was a fellow of the Royal Asiatic and Zoological Societies.[2][3] She was also a capable cinematographer and photographer, bringing films and photographs from many of her travels including politically sensitive areas. She studied in Arabia and undertook widespread archaeological studies including Egypt, Syria, Palestine, Persia, Java, China, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, and the Khmer, Inca, Aztec, and Mesopotamian peoples. Although she was regarded primarily as an archaeologist,[9] part of her remit was to collect contemporary ethnological data on ethnic groups little known in the West.[3] In her will she requested that a copy of her biography be shown to the chief of MI5 "for his appreciation", as well as entrusting that biography to (the then deceased) Bernard Rickatson-Hatt, who had spent three years in intelligence in Constantinople (as well as editor-in-chief for Reuters), suggesting sponsorship from the secret service for some of her many travels. These coincided with periods of international political sensitivity on a number of occasions. She often achieved largely unfettered travel, as in the case of Russia where she availed herself of permission to travel wherever she wanted and visited most of the Foreign Office officials (as she reported to Mao).

Attributed to Basilio Santa Cruz Pumacallao (Cuzco, Peru, 1635 - 1710) "Death of St. Joseph before Mary, Jesus and St. John the Evangelist" Oil on canvas. 128 x 175.5 cm. Basilio de Santa Cruz Pumacallao, along with Diego Quispe Tito, dominated the artistic panorama during the last quarter of the 17th century of the Cuzco school. Its most relevant patron was Bishop Manuel de Mollinedo y Angulo (1673-1699), a Spanish cleric who arrived in Cuzco in 1673. As indicated by the Royal Academy of History, Pumacallao was an: “Active painter in Cuzco in the second half of the 17th century.  He was an indigenous painter considered to be among the founders of the Cuzco school. Like Quispe Tito and other painters of his time, Santa Cruz was a member of the Inca aristocracy. His career began around 1661, when the Franciscans of Cuzco commissioned him to paint twelve angels and an equal number of Madonnas for their church, paintings that are now lost. This painting is comparable to that preserved in the Church and Convent of St. Francis in Santiago de Chile, which represents the appearance of a musical angel to ailing St. Francis. The scene narrates, in an everyday and natural environment - the room of a Jewish home with a beautiful still life of flowers and fruit on a table - the definitive departure to Heaven of the Putative Father of Jesus. According to the Apocryphal Gospels, the Carpenter is said to have lived 111 years in perfect health, spending about 20 with Jesus. "His body was not haggard, he had not delicate eyesight, nor even a single tooth spoiled in his mouth. He never lacked sanity and prudence, and always preserved his sound judgment, even being a venerable old man of 111." On a certain day - he explains in apocryphal text - St. Joseph received the visit of an angel who informed him that that same year he was going to die.  He then travelled to Jerusalem, "entered the temple of the Lord, knelt before the altar, and prayed asking that when the moment came, he would not be abandoned by his guardian angel or St. Michael the Archangel." Pumacallao captured that moment, with St. Michael at the foot of his bed, wearing a crown of glory, waiting to help him make the passage into eternity. In the background, but without being unimportant, are the friends and apostles of Jesus, among whom the artist highlights St. Peter, "waiting for the moment when the gates of Paradise will be opened to him." An apparently normal scene, charged with the mysticism of the characters and the gentleness and humility with which he dies.
