Ancient Rome, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A solid 14 karat gold ring comprised of a smooth rounded shaft that widens to contain a bezel surrounding an oval garnet intaglio. The garnet intaglio is elegantly engraved with a profile image of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, war, art, and commerce. Here the artisan depicted Minerva in her warrior guise, donning a crested helmet. Roman Empire, ca. 2nd century CE. Lovely high karat gold ring with thin tapered band, raised shoulders and rounded table set with circular carnelian intaglio decorated with an incised bull. The bull was often used in Roman religious ceremonies called a taurobolium, in which a bull was sacrificed for the well being of the people and the state. 4.6 grams and gold tests at 18K and approximately a US ring size 5. In ancient Rome, the scorpion was a symbol of protection, given its natural defensive mechanisms; i.e. its hard exoskeleton and let's not forget its venemous sting. Mid 20th century Dunhill Aquarium table lighter. An 'Aquarium' lighter by Alfred Dunhill, the lucite panels intaglio decorated with aquatic plants and fish, the plated metal mounts with cast retailer's mark and stamped registration number '737418'. 'Aquarium' lighters were all designed and hand-made from the early 1950s until the late 1960s by Ben Shillingford (1904-2000), who developed the carving and hand-painting techniques used on the the Lucite panels. 3 x 4 x 2in.
