Due to the bankruptcy of the Old Market Refinery, this previous refinery was destroyed by a fire in 1854 and rebuilt at great costs which bankrupted one of the partners. One of the other partners (William Stock), sold it to a public company (The Bristol Sugar Refinery Co. Ltd), the new company ceased trading in 1912, but the building is still standing today and used for other purposes.
