§ KATE DOWNIE (SCOTTISH 1958-) THE SUGARBOND WAREHOUSE - 1997-98 Etching and aquatint with monotype, A/P, signed, dated and editioned in pencilDimensions:the sheet 49.5cm x 69.5cm (19.5in x 27.25in)Note: Note: On her website, the artist discusses the inspiration and technique in this work: This work was developed during a printmaking residency at Lowick House in Cumbria. Much of my art towards the end of the last century was based on this industrial corner of Leith in Edinburgh. Like all the best city rivers, the Water of Leith flows through from pastoral to post industrial in seconds, and this is a particularly interesting section of that river. The embedded monoprint within each of these etching relates to the billboard dreams that glow even in the murkiest places. The contrasting subject has its echo in the contrasting intaglio versus relief printing methods. The edition is variable as each monoprint had to be remade, though the steel plate surround is a constant.

A selection of striped onyx jewellery comprised of a graduated bead necklace with paste dividers, 12 pendants, two rings including one in the form of a large four-leaf clover, 3cm across, four brooches, a pair of stud earrings, a pair of drop earrings and a pair of cuff links. We are pleased to be offering this lot from the stock of family run firm Shipton and Co., who were based in Hastings White Rock area, and who were unfortunately forced to close their doors in 2014 after a section of the rock face above collapsed onto their shop, making the building unsafe. Like banded agate striped onyx is a form of layered chalcedony that differs only in the parallel and curved nature of the bands with striped onyx having the former. Since ancient times onyx of all colours has been used for jewellery and ornamental purposes and lends itself to carving, especially in intaglio or cameo form due to the contrasting layers. The ancient Romans believed the red version of this stone, called sardonyx, bestowed courage in battle and carried amulets of it engraved with Mars the god of war. In Renaissance Europe, the stone was believed to bestow eloquence and a traditional Persian belief is that it helped with epilepsy.CONDITION REPORTS & PAYMENT DETAILSIMPORTANT* Descriptions do not include condition reports.
