A GEORGE II RED AND GILT JAPANNED LONGCASE CLOCK STEPHEN ASSELIN, LONDON, CIRCA 1725 The eight-day bell-striking movement with 12 inch brass break-arch dial applied with mask and foliate spandrels, a silvered Roman and arabic chapter ring, matt centre and subsidiary STRIKE/SILENT selection dial to the arch, signed on a silvered plaque 'Step. Asselin LONDON' the gilt and polychrome decorated red japanned case with chinoiserie landscapes, a domed caddy surmount 258cm high, 50.5cm wide, 26cm deep Provenance: Christie's, London, Property From A European Noble Family, 10th November 2005, lot 40, where purchased by Robert Kime Formerly at Docker Nook and Warwick Square, see Alastair Langlands, Robert Kime, Francis Lincoln Limited, London, 2015, p205Stephen Asselin is recorded working in London from around 1700. He is not recorded as becoming a member of the Clockmaker's Company which suggests that he was most likely a Huguenot immigrant. Condition Report: Movement is essentially in working condition however mechanism is dirty/dusty hence a clean/service is required. Notches cut the 3 o'clock edges of the plates indicates that an alarm mechanism was once fitted that is no longer present. Otherwise movement appears complete and all-original. The dial in in original albeit in dirty/neglected condition. The centre shows evidence of being fitted with an alarm disc (curved cut-outs to the seconds ring and signature plate). The areas of silvering are now very thin presenting as almost brass in colour. The right-hand corner of the plate has evidence of being bent and re-straightened; the dial foot behind also has a small loss to the tip (section above the securing pin hole). The right-hand mount to the arch is missing a fin from the dolphin. The hour hand has been repaired; the minute hand and selection pointer to the arch are replacements. The seatboard is original to the movement which rests on blocks applied to the case uprights (cheek); the presence of these blocks suggests that the movement and dial re not original to the case. The dial sits a little wonky (leans to the right) hence some adjustment to the blocks will be required to level it.The case is very original retaining old surface in essentially untouched condition. The hood is in good original condition with notable faults limited to blind fret panels missing from the quadrants above the break-arch pediment and some historic worm damage. The rear of the superstructure is interestingly backed with old thick paper inscribed in ink with random Iberian text. The trunk and base are in very fine original condition with faults limited to some very slight localised flaking to the raised decoration; the finish can be best described as fine patinated old original surface with pleasing degree of age-related wear, discolouration and fading. The backboard is in fine condition and the skirting is also original albeit with historic worm damage and a small scarf repair to inner panel to the rear left hand corner. The left-hand side has some slight shrinkage cracking towards the rear edge; the lock to the trunk door is a replacement.Clock has pendulum, a pair of modern cast iron weights a crank winder and a case key. AFTER THE ANTIQUE, A CARVED MARBLE GRAND TOUR FIGURE OF THE EPHESIAN ARTEMIS POSSIBLY ITALIAN OR FRENCH, 19TH CENTURY Depicting Artemis (or Diana) as a deity of nature, protection and of fertility, wearing a mural crown emblematic of her city protection, with multitude of breasts or egg shaped nodules, an enveloping tight sheath skirt with panels of heads of animals, plinth base 118cm high Provenance: Robert Kime (1946-2022) Collection "All cities worship Artemis of Ephesus, and all individuals hold her in honour" Pausanias "Guide to Greece", 2nd Century A.D. The Temple of Artemis was a Greek temple dedicated to an ancient, local form of the goddess Artemis located in Ephesus near the modern town of Selçuk in present day Turkey. The worship was centred around the Goddess Artemis- not as the virgin huntress but rather as a goddess of fecundity and protection akin to the Phrygian goddess Cybele. By around 150 B.C., coins of the period show a figure much like this example. Most characteristic are the rows of gourd egg like objects around her upper midriff. Sometimes thought of as breasts (where the figure is then referred to as Polymastros), scholars have posited that they are instead gourds or pouches called kurša - others have suggested bees' eggs, dates and bull testes. The finest examples of mostly Roman statues of this are found in the Ephesus Archaeological Museum in Selçuk titled 'Artemis the Beautiful' and 'Artemis the Colossal'. Stylistically this example, with the distinctive exaggerated building above a plain swept veil, natural curled hair, suggests a later derivation- perhaps from the 18th century and 19th century prints produced depicting what was then referred to as Diana of Ephesus (see for example Le Magasin pittoresque, book 26, publ. Paris 1833). Examples produced by Righetti and others at this period tend to depict her more in the traditional fashion with disc like headpiece and a Polos crown. Another comparison should be made with the plaster cast version in The Sir John Soane's Museum (Museum number: SC51) as described by Soane in his 1835 "Description of the house and museum on the north side of Lincoln's Inn Fields, the residence of Sir John Soane"; 'A few steps up the staircase leading to the Attic story, in a niche, is a bust .... and in the niche above is a plaster Cast of the Ephesian Diana or Prolific Nature, presented to me by Messrs. Rundell & Co.' In the Curatorial Notes for the Soane example- it is commented that: "It is fascinating that the original letter sent to Soane with the statue refers to its being a cast from a Greek marble formerly in the possession of Rundell and Bridge because in fact this figure has rather a 'Regency' look and former Director, Tim Knox, has speculated that it might in fact be an early 19th century sculptor's version of the Ephesian Diana rather than a cast after the antique." As with this example from The Kime Collection, both share a softened more idealised presentation of the form with a face that is more suggestive of a Regency approach to Classical beauty. Condition Report: Wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. The reverse shows clearly that this has been broken into several pieces at the upper end of the figure and repaired- also visible to the front. There's a clear line also across slightly lower which may be from construction suggesting use of sectional composition. Edge loss and wear- some scuffing around nose and mouth and what appears to be some deposition of material to her left cheek. old iron inserts at wrists- surface dirt which has become engrained. Wear to base edges Please see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report. A Chinese Underglaze Blue And Iron Red Dragon Cup. Qing Dynasty. Dimensions: W: 2 3/4 in. H: 2 1/4 in. (7.3 cm x 6 cm). The collection originate from Edward Hobart Seymour's uncle's family. Source: From the collection of Edward Hobart Seymour. Edward Hobart Seymour (1840-1929) was the grandson of Sir Michael Seymour. He studied at Radley College in Southsea and Eastman's Royal Naval Academy, joining the Royal Navy in 1852. He became a Royal Navy officer and the first overall commander of the Eight-Nation Alliance during the Boxer Rebellion. In 1857, Seymour came to China, participating in the Second Opium War, but he returned to Britain due to health reasons. In 1860, he returned to China to suppress the Taiping Rebellion and visited its capital, Nanjing. During the Boxer Rebellion in 1900, Seymour, stationed in Tientsin (Tianjin), ordered "appropriate and practicable measures" to protect British nationals in China. When the Boxers reached Beijing, Seymour initiated military action. In June 1900, the Eight-Nation Alliance formed, appointing Seymour as the commander-in-chief. His forces were blocked at Langfang. Later, he engaged in battles at Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuchang, Shanhaiguan, and Qinhuangdao. The command was later assumed by the German General Waldersee. Seymour was promoted to Admiral in 1901 and returned to England in August of the same year. He visited China three times, receiving numerous art pieces as gifts from the Chinese government and acquiring artworks during the suppression of the Boxers. These artifacts were transported back to the UK with his fleet. Admiral Seymour received the Order of the Bath and the Victoria Cross. He passed away on March 2, 1929, at the age of 88, unmarried and childless. After retirement, Seymour organized his collection and affixed his signature to some items, also sealing them with his family crest. He sold and donated parts of his collection in his later years.

The iron was then shaped using various tools, including hammers and anvils, before being finished with precision. Size: L:250mm / W:200mm ; 540g Provenance: Property of a European collector; ex.
