Kazunori Ishibashi (Matsue 1879 - Tokyo 1928) - 'Miss Johnstone' - Oil on canvas portrait. Early 20th century circa 1908 original oil on canvas portrait painting titled 'Miss Johnstone' by the Japanese artist Kazunori Ishibashi. The painting depicting Miss Johnstone in a frontal portrait with gold brooch & dark garments. Signed by the artist on left side of the canvas in bright red pigment. Canvas signed to the verso by artist. Framed & glazed in gesso gilt frame. Canvas measuring approx. 75cm x 62cm.Kazunori Ishibashi was born on June 4th, 1879 in Matsue, Japan. In 1905, he leave Japan for the first time and came to England, where he studied for five years in the Royal Academy schools. In 1908, Miss Johnstone's portrait hung at his first exhibition at the Royal Academy and was the first to be painted by a Japanese artist on purely Western lines. The Times described him as a portrait painted of 'exceptional gifts'. He was a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in England, as well as part of the Paris Salon and Société Nationale des Beaux Arts. The painting has been restored and cleaned by Seonaid Wood, Bristol on the 1st May 2002.
