Walter, Kindberg, 1986Literatur:- Ausst.-Kat. Hans Arp - Zum 100. Keith Coventry, British b.1958 - Ontological Picture, 2010; oil on canvas board, signed and dated on the reverse 'K. Coventry 2010', 20 x 14.9 cm (ARR) Note: The Ontological Picture series (1996-2004) encapsulates Coventry’s desire to bring contemporary political, social and cultural issues into dialogue with key movements of twentieth-century art and philosophy. The series is closely related to his earlier Estate Paintings (1992-2000) which isolated visual elements from British council estate aerial view maps in order to resemble works of key modernist figures such as Kazimir Malevich or Piet Mondrian. For the present series, Coventry appropriated the ‘You Are Here’ arrows from the same maps and turned them into wooden models which he scattered arbitrarily across the canvas, creating the forms of the work. Coventry ironically uses the art language associated with the modernist utopian idealism that spawned these high-density housing projects to comment on the realities of contemporary city life.Coventry is hugely respected as both an artist and curator. He co-founded and curated City Racing, an influential not-for-profit gallery in Kennington, South London from 1988 to 1998. The gallery gave valuable exposure to artists such as Sarah Lucas, Gillian Wearing and Fiona Banner. Earlier this year Pace Gallery exhibited ‘Keith Coventry: City Racing’, showing celebrated bodies of work alongside a new series. In 2010 he won the John Moores Painting Prize for his Spectrum Jesus painting. His work has been exhibited widely in the United Kingdom and Europe and is included in collections worldwide, including the British Council; Tate Modern; Arts Council of England; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

John Downes Rochfort (the name on the reverse of many of the tiles) (1825 - 1885) was of British nationality, but his roots traced back to an ancient Irish family with significant political ties. His father, Colonel John Staunton Rochfort of Clogrenane in Ireland, came from this esteemed lineage, and his mother, Mary Burgh of Co. Kildare Downes, was his father's second wife. John Downes Rochfort inherited two ancestral estates in Ireland and also possessed a villa in Monte Carlo, along with residences in the prestigious locations of the Boltons, Kensington, and Eaton Place. A passionate traveler, John Downes Rochfort's extensive journeys are well-documented in the John Downes Rochfort Albums collection. Beyond his love for exploration, he was an avid collector and a skilled artist, particularly known for his watercolors and ceramic works.
An Important Collection of 18 Papers documenting The History of DNA, An important collection of 18 papers documenting one of the most important scientific milestones of the twentieth century, recording the discovery of the molecular structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), the early research that lead to its discovery as well as later papers on the DNA, the main component of chromosomes and the material that transfers genetic characteristics in all life forms. From ‘One Hundred Books Famous in Medicine, p. 362’, “Forty years after Watson and Crick's discovery, so much of the basic understanding of medicine and disease has advanced to the molecular level that their paper may be considered the most significant single contribution to biology and medicine in the twentieth century”. The double helix describing the molecular structure of DNA has not only reshaped biology, it has become a cultural icon, represented in sculpture, visual art, jewellery, and toys. In 1962, Watson, Crick, and Wilkins shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material." By the early 1950s DNA had become one of the most important questions in biology. Maurice Wilkins of King's College London and his colleague Rosalind Franklin were both working on DNA, with Franklin producing X-ray diffraction images of its structure. Wilkins also introduced his friend Francis Crick to the subject, and Crick and his partner James Watson began their own investigation at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, focusing on building molecular models. After one failed attempt in which they postulated a triple-helix structure, they were banned by the Cavendish from spending any additional time on the subject. But a year later, after seeing new X-ray diffraction images taken by Franklin (notably the famous 'Photo 51'), they resumed their work and soon announced that not only had they discovered the double-helix structure of DNA, but even more importantly, that "the specific pairing we have postulated immediately suggests a possible copying mechanism for the genetic material."1. 1952 - Letters To The Editor: Evidence for the Pauling-Cory α-Helix in Synthetic Polypeptides, W.
