'SS Normandie' a souvenir launch publication edited by 'L'Illustration' June 1935:, containing photographs, artists illustrations and detailed text of the ship's technical details and luxurious fittings, gilt stamped card covers (some loss to corners, age browned cover).*Notes- Built in Saint-Nazaire for the French line Compagnie General Transatlantique, SS Normandie was considered at the time to be an 'unrivalled masterpiece of modern science and art, a magnificent example of French genius and taste' . Her interior was overseen by the French architect Roger-Henri Expert and designed in the high Art Deco and Streamline Modern manner. The dining room was lined with 12 pillars and 38 columns of Lalique glass and the children's room was designed by author Jean de Brunhoff who decorated it with images of Babar the Elephant. On her maiden voyage in 1935 SS Normandie won the coveted 'Blue Ribbon' and throughout her career traded this honour with RMS Queen Mary. At the outbreak of WWII Normandie was interned by the US Government. In 1941 she was approved for conversion to a troop carrier and during her conversion in 1942 a fire broke out and she capsized and sank in New York harbour.
