19th century Chinese blue and white vase and cover, of inverted baluster form, painted with a continuous mountainous landscape scene with buildings and figures, between floral and key borders, the domed cover with compressed button knop, Kangxi four figure character mark beneath, H39cmCondition Report:The cover with a reglued break and various filled chips and finial has a small chip. The base has a large chip to the rim, two of the broken sections are with the vase, but there are still pieces missing. The body has a recluded hairline crack, the glue is visible from the interior and exterior. Wear to base and minor surface wear throughout. (UV Checked)
Mid-19th century kingwood casket, by Alphonse Giroux & Co, the hinged cover and sides inlaid with brass marquetry panels of scrolling foliage on ivory, within moulded gilt brass borders, the front with three arched glazed panels with watercolour inserts depicting figures in a landscape, with silk lined interior, the lock plate signed 'Alph Giroux À Paris', L22.5cm, H16cm, W13cm. This item has been registered for sale under Section 10 of the APHA Ivory ActCondition Report:Ivory panels restored throughout with obvious cracks and losses. One brass border on the cover replaced and veneer moulding beneath replaced, with some losses to the corners and splits. One painted panel and archer border replaced, some small losses to veneer, splits and scratches. All four feet are later replacements, silk lining stained and torn in areas. A blue and white pearlware coffee pot and cover and a barrel-shaped jug and cover. The coffee pot by Benjamin Adams and printed in the Tendril pattern, height 28cm, the barrel-shaped jug circa 1810 printed with an oriental landscape, height 22cm (2).From the Michael Hickman collection, Lays, 2013The coffee pot has a large chip mising from the lid, the jug has a chip to spout and a crack to base, the cover has several chips to the inner rim. Circular silvered bronze medal with integral loop for ribbon suspension. The face has a dark patina and shows a female figure with her right hand raised holding an upright sword and her left arm raised holding a slain dragon (symbolic of the German Empire) by the neck. Circumscribed upper right LIBERATUM and signed by J.P. Laurens. The reverse has standing figures of a woman and child to the right surveying a devastated landscape, marked Paris Art on the right. The medal was produced commercially in 1919 to mark the liberation of German-occupied French territory and to raise funds for restoration work. SIR AUGUSTUS WALL CALLCOTT (BRITISH 1779-1844) THE TRENT ON THE TYROL Oil on canvas 76 x 111.5cm (29¾ x 43¾ in.)Exhibited: London, Royal Academy, 1836, No. 130 Sir Augustus Wall Callcott began his career as a pupil of John Hoppner but developed an interest in British landscape painting and later travelled through France, Holland and Italy recording expansive scenes and exhibiting them very successfully at the Royal Academy. Knighted by Queen Victoria in 1837 he later turned to history painting and in 1844 was honoured with the appointment of Surveyor of the Queen's Pictures. Condition Report: The canvas is relined, fine surface craquelure but the paint appears to be stable. There are minor abrasions to the edges. Under UV light there are some scattered spots of retouching. The largest is a diagonal line running from the top right corner down to the figure in the bottom foreground, this is probably a repaired tear. There is also an area of retouching at the centre of the sky. It has a layer of dirt and decoloured varnish. Condition Report Disclaimer
FOLLOWER OF KLAES MOLENAER FIGURES SKATING IN A FROZEN WINTER LANDSCAPE Oil on panel 52 x 65.5cm (20¼ x 25¾ in.) Provenance: Ronald W. Raven (1904-1991) Sale, Phillips, London, Work of Art and Paintings, 21 July 1992, lot 250, as 'Rutger Verburgh', where purchased by the present ownerWe are grateful to Fred Meijer for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. Condition Report: The panel presents a long crack in the middle, where it might have been split in the past. UV light reveals a thick varnish, and various retouches scattered across. Most of the retouches are in in the sky, on the roofs, and on the lower right corner, where the figures are skating. Most of the retouches are a about 0.5cm each, except for some bigger ones, such as the one on the upper right corner and on the roof of the small house in the foreground. The most evident retouching is present on the crack of the panel which crosses horizontally the painting. Such retouches are about 0.5cm wide and follow the line of the crack. Furthermore, there is a thick varnish spread unevenly across the painting. Condition Report Disclaimer
