The subject of the phoenix (fenghuang) as the main decoration, making it emblematic as opposed to representing any particular myth in which the bird may figure, suggests that it was made for the Court, since this bird came, by the Qing dynasty, to represent the Empress.Auction result comparison:Type: Near identicalAuction: Christie's New York, 17 September 2008, lot 82Price: USD 8,125 or approx. AN IMPERIAL CINNABAR LACQUER 'ZHANG SHENG'S DREAM' SNUFF BOTTLE, CHINA, 1730-1830Attributed to the Palace Workshops, Beijing. Of flattened ovoid form, deeply carved through the layers of cinnabar lacquer with a continuous landscape scene divided by rockwork and trees, one side with Zhang Sheng sleeping at his desk on a covered porch, as he sleeps a wispy line representing the dreams of the young scholar swirls above his head, flowing and spreading into the other side of the bottle showing him in a passionate embrace with his forbidden love, Cui Yingying, all on a variety of diaper grounds.Provenance: Galerie Max in Brussels, Belgium, 19 February 1966 (according to an ancient family ledger inspected by Cabinet Portier, Paris, France, during their appraisal of the complete de Strycker estate; this ledger remains in the possession of the de Strycker family and may not be copied). Diameter neck 1.9 cm and mouth 0.5 cm This is a classic imperial lacquer snuff bottle on bronze. The group of bottles represents masterly carving in lacquer that is splendidly sculptural and covers a range of delightful subject matter, usually drawn from popular dramas, operas or novels, or myths and legends. We can be sure that the group as a whole was imperial, even if we cannot be sure that every last example was made for the court. If they were for example made in Suzhou, the same workshops might have made a few pieces for private sale as well. The snuff bottle depicts a famous scene from the Romance of the Western Chamber, written by Wang Shifu (1250-1300), a story immensely popular with all levels of society. Woodblock illustrations in the many editions helped conventionalize images that were instantly recognizable to the public, thus creating a corpus of motifs that was widely used by jade carvers, painters, silk embroiderers, lacquer workers, and other craftsmen.Professor Herbert Giles, whose History of Chinese Literature was published in 1924, refers to The Xixiang Ji as the play “which will best repay reading". It is the typical story where a handsome student and a beautiful girl attempt to cross the social divide, aided and incited by the girl's maid. The dialogue is punctuated with images of wind, snow, moonlight, and flowers, emphasizing both the passion and the romance felt by the struggling couple.Literature comparison:Four cinnabar lacquer bottles from this group carved with figural scenes are in the Qing Court Collection in the Palace Museum, Beijing, and are illustrated in Masterpieces of Snuff Bottles in the Palace Museum, Beijing, 1995, pp. 187-90, nos. 192-95. The following is a unique item of a lockable, unused ledger of approximately 200 white pages with marbled end papers and brown boards. With lock and key broken, unable to open. Two letters enclosed separately. First letter typewritten, 4 pages, 7" x 9", dated 24th November 1923. Printed address of Watton Rectory, Hertford. The letter is addressed to Mrs Gibbs and is written from the Meyer family, expressing advice on the Archdeacon's garden, mentioning many shrubs, soil conditions, etc. This letter is accompanied by a double sided letter, dated September 12th 1925. Both letters are to an Archdeacon on expert gardening matters. These are of interest in that Alan Turing, of Bletchley Hall fame, stayed with his family at the Rectory with the Meyers for 6 weeks during the summer of 1923. A biography by Andrew Hodges tells a tale of how a gypsy fortune teller at the Church Fete at Watton Rectory foretold that Alan Turing would be a genius. Very unusual item of some interest. From single vendors book collection. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £5.99, EU from £7.99, Rest of World from £9.99. 30kg box UK £15, EU £40, ROW £60
Property of a Gentleman. Sir Joshua Reynolds PRA (1723 - 1792) Mrs. Letitia Sparrow (nee Popham) (1746 - 1838) Oil on canvas In a carved giltwood frame With labels and inscriptions versoLot Essay: Reynolds' pocket books record five appointments in May 1766 for sittings with Mrs. Sparrow for this portrait. They took place on 14th May (at nine o'clock) 15th (at 3) 16th, 17th and 19th (all at 9). A payment of 35 guineas is recorded in the ledger on 6th June 1767. This accords with the price that Reynolds was charging for portraits of this size as noted in the front of a pocket book for 1764. Another of her family appears to have been painted by Reynolds the previous year. There is an appointment with a Mrs. Popham recorded for May 1765. Letitia Popham was the only daughter of Thomas Popham of Bagborough House, West Bagborough, Somerset and his wife Sara. This was a branch of the Popham family who had long been wealthy West Country landowners. The family's apogee was the appointment of Sir John Popham as Lord Chief Justice of England in 1592, a role in which he served under both Queen Elizabeth and King James. Letitia married James Sparrow (1742-1804), the sole surviving son of Francis Sparrow of Flax Bourton, Somerset, and his wife Sarah Smith of London, whom he had married in 1730. James and Letitia had two sons and eight daughters. She died in 1838 aged 92 and is buried at Long Ashton. The sitter is painted half-length, in a trompe l'oeil oval, wearing a blue gown trimmed with ermine over a chemise with a lace collar. An inscription on the back of the lining canvas reads: 'Loetitia Popham wife of James Sparrow Esq. of Flaxbourton, Somerset'. There is an old label at the bottom of the back of the frame which reads: 'Laetitia Popham sister of Alexander m. James Sparrow of Flaxbourton'.Provenance: By descent in the family of the sitter; Private collection, United Kingdom Literature: David Mannings, Sir Joshua Reynolds, a complete catalogue of his paintings, Vol.1. No. 1656, page 421 Leslie & Taylor, Life and times of Sir Joshua Reynolds. Vol.1, Chap. IV, page 266Dimensions: (Canvas) 28.75 in. (H) x 22.75 in. (W) (Frame) 35.25 in. (H) x 30 in. (W)

On his death in 1630 it passed to his son Nicholas, one of the judges of Charles I, and in 1660 the estate was forfeited to the Crown. This chequered history might explain the deed’s somewhat reticent description of the manor’s descent. A ledger-stone in Wonston church records the burial of Robert Foyle of Norton and his wife Dulcibella, the eldest daughter of John Pitman of Quarley; Robert died 26 September 1683 aged 33, and Dulcibella 17 May 1718 aged 68.
