Diana - The Private Correspondence of a Princess A collection of letters and notecards written by Diana, Princess of Wales Diana, The Princess of Wales, signed letter dated September 10th 1995, hand written in ink two sides, on her personal cream and burgundy Kensington Palace notepaper.'I was so touched by your kindness tonight that I wanted to write immediately, & tell you!'Thanking Susie Kassem for her gift of a book on meditation ‘I know that the contents will bring comfort and courage at challenging moments’Written in the early days of the two women’s friendship ‘I am extremely happy that our paths have crossed as I feel that I have known you before….’Two very small smears measuring approximately 2mm and 3mm above the word 'touched' and below the date, fold crease, and a very faint smear above 'the' at the foot of the page on the face side.
Diana - The Private Correspondence of a Princess A collection of letters and notecards written by Diana, Princess of Wales Diana, The Princess of Wales, signed letter dated October 10th 1995, hand written in ink on two sides, on blue Kensington Palace notepaper. Thanking Susie Kassem for a gift of jasmine oil. The letter also mentions Diana’s acupuncturist Oonagh (Shanley-Toffolo) who was a very close friend 'Thank heavens you have returned to the fold & Oonagh & I reckon you are grounded for the next few months!' and expresses her gratitude to Susie for providing a listening ear ‘You were so special to listen to all my chat, never a dull moment in this department!’A small discolouration spot at foot of the facing page, fold crease, and two faint red crayon lines one in the bottom right and one to the centre.
Diana - The Private Correspondence of a Princess A collection of letters and notecards written by Diana, Princess of Wales Diana, The Princess of Wales, signed letter dated November 27th 1995, hand written in ink two sides, on her personal cream and burgundy Kensington Palace notepaper. Thanking Susie for a gift of flowers, which were received when the Princess returned from a trip to Argentina and hoping to catch up with her soon. 'I have thought of you often during my days of absence, but hope very much to catch up on all fronts this week'Note: On November 20th 1995, the BBC aired Diana's now infamous Panorama interview with Martin Bashir. Three days later she visited Argentina as a 'goodwill ambassador' for Britain. Relations between the two countries had been strained since the Falklands War in 1982 and it was expected that this would be a difficult solo engagement for the Princess. However, within hours of landing and after a visit to an infant paralysis center, she had won over the Argentine public with her caring and compassion. 'Princess Diana managed to make her way to the heart of my people' said Argentinian President Carlos Menem, he declared her visit as 'exceptional, absolutely positive.'She flew home on November 26th and this letter was written the following day.Fold crease, faint red crayon line on verso.
Diana - The Private Correspondence of a Princess A collection of letters and notecards written by Diana, Princess of Wales Diana, The Princess of Wales, signed letter dated December 10th 1995, hand written in ink on two sides, on blue Kensington Palace notepaper. Thanking both Susie and Tarek for lunch the previous Saturday and also stating how much she values their friendship ‘I’m immensely touched by how protective you both are of me….. I’m not used to that!!’Note: As with the previous lot, this letter was written just a short time after the Princess's Panorma interview and she was still at the centre of a media storm. It would have been imperative for Diana to surround herself with people who she felt safe with and was protected by, and it is revealing that she writes that she is not used to this feeling of protection.A noticeable accretion to the right hand margin, a lighter accretion at the foot of the page under 'friendship' running across the word and a fold crease.
Diana, The Princess of Wales, signed letter dated December 26th 1995, hand written in ink two sides, on her personal cream and burgundy Kensington Palace notepaper.Written on Boxing Day, Diana had obviously enjoyed a marvellous festive celebration with the Kassems and writes thanking Susie, for her ‘generosity, presents, more presents and a wonderful lunch.’ she also writes ‘I am lost for words by all the lovely things you bring into my life, when many people would have deserted this ship’Note: The Princess had been expected to spend the Christmas of 1995 with the Royal Family at Sandringham, however on the 18th December, Buckingham Palace announced that the Princess of Wales would be not be joining them. Contemporary news sources state that Diana spent Christmas alone at Kensington Palace, however this letter would appear to contradict that, in it she tellingly writes ‘I was so thrilled to be invited into a family occasion particularly as I was made to feel like one of the team.’ It is heart warming to think that she enjoyed a family celebration after all. An area of bleeding on 'Thanks', and accretion on the top left hand corner and a fold crease.
Diana - The Private Correspondence of a Princess A collection of letters and notecards written by Diana, Princess of Wales Diana, The Princess of Wales, signed letter dated February 7th 1996, hand written in ink two sides, on her personal cream and burgundy Kensington Palace notepaper.A letter of effusive appreciation of the Kassem's support, thanking Susie for lunch 'You are immensely kind and enormously generous to me on an hourly level - I dont know what I've done to deserve it, but having never had such love and support from a married team before, it's just magical.'Slight bleed on the word 'enormously' on the verso, fold crease.
Diana - The Private Correspondence of a Princess A collection of letters and notecards written by Diana, Princess of Wales Diana, The Princess of Wales, signed letter dated February 17th 1996, hand written in ink three sides, on her personal cream and burgundy Kensington Palace notepaper.'Thank you for all the lovely things you said to me on the telephone tonight...' 'You have no idea the joy & trust you and Tarik have introduced into my life & I count myself extremely fortunate to be so near to you both'Diana also goes on to offer her own advice and comfort to her friend over a family matter.Fold creases to both pages.
Diana - The Private Correspondence of a Princess A collection of letters and notecards written by Diana, Princess of Wales Diana, The Princess of Wales, signed letter dated February 25th 1996, hand written in ink two sides, on her personal cream and burgundy Kensington Palace notepaper.Thanking Tarek for his advice. 'I appreciate it enormously & realise that you spend a great deal of time thinking about this particular arena & the clarity you obviously see gives me the courage and strength I need to complete the course... thank you'This letter was written during a particurlarly challenging period for the Princess. Earlier in February she had met with the Queen at Buckingham Palace and discussed the custody and care of the Princes William and Harry, and divorce negotiatons were beginning in earnest. On the 28th February she had a further meeting with Prince Charles and later that day decided to issue her own statement about the divorce without notifying the palace. It is clear from this letter that she was extremely appreciative of the advice and support she was receiving at this difficult time.Fold crease, faint ink line at the head of the page on the verso.
Diana - The Private Correspondence of a Princess A collection of letters and notecards written by Diana, Princess of Wales Diana, The Princess of Wales, signed letter dated March 10th 1996, hand written in ink two sides, on her personal cream and burgundy Kensington Palace notepaper. An affectionate letter to her friend Susie showing appreciation for spending their valuable time with her and thanking Susie for a book on crystals and a 'rock'. Thank you for making my Saturday and sweetly picking me up & here is to another week!'Note: Diana was very interested in the healing powers of crystals and she and Susie regularly exchanged gifts of this sort. Also, divorce proceedings were ongoing at this time and the wording of this letter implies that just getting through each week was a goal. A very faint smear above 'special' on the face side, fold crease bleed to 'really' on the verso.
Diana - The Private Correspondence of a Princess A collection of letters and notecards written by Diana, Princess of Wales Diana, The Princess of Wales, signed letter dated March 16th 1996, hand written in ink two sides, on her personal cream and burgundy Kensington Palace notepaper.A warm and afffectionate letter expressing her profound gratitude for the love and support Susie and Tarek have provided and thanking them for the gift of a Chrysocolla crystal, an appropriate gift during ongoing divorce proceedings as Chrysocolla is said to promote level headedness, encouraging clarity of thought and a neutral, calm attitude during turbulence. In ancient Egypt, it was called the "wise stone" because it shielded and encouraged the mind during negotiations.'I am overwhelmed totally by your cherishing & know that without your support & understanding I'd never have made it through the last few months' Fold cease.
Diana - The Private Correspondence of a Princess A collection of letters and notecards written by Diana, Princess of Wales Diana, The Princess of Wales, signed letter dated April 23rd 1996, hand written in ink two sides, on her personal cream and burgundy Kensington Palace notepaper.A very moving letter in which the Princess emphatically expresses just how much the strain is affecting her. She writes apologetically to cancel a trip to the opera with her friends and explains:I am having a very difficult time and the pressure is serious and coming from all sides' She continues: 'It's too difficult sometimes to keep ones head up and today I'm on my knees and just longing for this divorce to go through as the possible cost is tremendous'Diana's handwriting is normally very open and flowing, but it deteriorates towards the end of this letter and it is clear that she is struggling as she writes these last painful sentences.Fold crease across page.

She also thanks Susie & Tarek for the gifts they have brought back for her from Dubai and how much she enjoyed a recent lunch with them.'I adored our lunch together on Saturday & I always depart deep in thought at what Tarik has suggested & how right he is !'She expresses her love to them both and ends 'thank you for believing in me...' Faint pink smear possibly from the printing of the paper by the comma after 'Susie', and fold creases on both pages.
Diana - The Private Correspondence of a Princess A collection of letters and notecards written by Diana, Princess of Wales Diana, The Princess of Wales, signed letter dated May 20th 1996, hand written in ink three sides, on her personal cream and burgundy Kensington Palace notepaper.A remarkable letter. The Princess thanks her friend for flowers but goes on to express her frustration at not being able to get hold of Susie and discuss personal matters as she doesn't have a mobile phone and she believes her Kesington Palace phone is bugged: 'as my lines here are constantly recorded & passed on'This letter was written during what was clearly a very difficult phase of divorce negotiations. She writes: 'If I had known a year ago what I'd experience going through this divorce, I'd never have consented, it's desperate and ugly.'A faint mirrored ink stain from the KENSINGTON PALACE header on the foot of the first face page, both pages with fold crease.

A very faint smear at the head of the facing page, fold crease and faint bleed on 'wonderful' at the foot of the verso page.
Diana - The Private Correspondence of a Princess Diana - The Private Correspondence of a Princess Diana, The Princess of Wales, signed letter dated December 17th 1996, hand written in ink two sides, on her personal cream and burgundy Kensington Palace notepaper.A particularly poignant and heartfelt letter. The Princess writes to thank Susie for flowers and her gift and tells her she is going abroad to the sunshine on the 24th 'as not being a lover of Christmas, I will top myself if I remain here! I Hope1997 will be an easier year for us all 'She also writes about their mutual friend John Kaliviotis, who they met when he was a patient at the Royal Brompton Hospital, awaiting a heart and lung transplant as he suffered from Cystic Fibrosis. John sadly passed away, and Princess Diana & Susie travelled to Greece for his funeral. They subsequently became very close to John's family. In this letter, Diana writes: 'I think often of John and his family and miss them more than I could ever have imagined...'Fold crease, bleed to 'than' and 'miss' on the verso.
