Charchoune war Schüler von Henri Le Fauconnier und verkehrte mit Albert Gleizes, Marie Laurencin, und Francis Picabia. Er war Mitglied der DADA-Bewegung im Café Certá, beim "Trial of Barrès" von André Breton organisiert und stellte in Paris bei Tristan Tzara in der Montaigne Galerie und in Berlin in der Galerie Der Sturm aus. In diesem Werk vervielfältigt er die Register in einem unerwarteten Spiel und bietet dem Dichter "Zeichen, Buchstaben, Geldscheine, magische Dreiecke, musikalische Botschaften, imaginäre Schriften, Sphynx und grafische Schlangen, Silhouetten und Signaturen". One of 54 copies on vellum d'Arches. - Rare first edition of this typographic poem, a triangular portrait of the painter, illustrated "under the sign of the wave and the snake" by the Russian painter Serge Charchoune (1888-1975), who lived mainly in France and died in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges. Charchoune was a student of Henri Le Fauconnier and associated with Albert Gleizes, Marie Laurencin, and Francis Picabia. He was a member of the DADA movement at the Café Certá, organized at the "Trial of Barrès" by André Breton, and exhibited in Paris with Tristan Tzara at the Montaigne Gallery and in Berlin at the Der Sturm Gallery. The full-leather bound vol. 2 (erroneously titled vol. 1) with issues 3-5 from vol. 1 with detached book block, loose layers and other defects. Some brown spotting. The orig. print by Behrens (The Kiss) foxed. Overall well preserved with numerous wonderful original prints.

ETHEL LEONTINE GABAIN (1883-1950) 'War Work at Williams & Williams Reliance Works, Chester' signed to the margin and in plate, lithograph, 55cm x 63cm. Brought up in an Anglo-French family, Ethel studied at the Slade, in Paris and at the Central School of Art where she developed her lithographic techniques. She was a founder member, with her husband, John Copley, of the Senefelder Club, set up to pursue and exhibit modern lithography, She also worked as a book illustrator and painter and at the outbreak of WW2, she was employed as an Official War Artist, with the specific brief to document the war work undertaken by women in what had been traditionally male crafts and trades. She also received commissions from a number of commercial organisations involved in war work, including Ferranti and Richard Haworth.This lithograph is from a series commissioned by Williams & Williams and depicts lathe operators making aircraft parts.
