Kleiner Papierdurchbruch im Oberrand und Mittelfalz.)Schutzbrief für die Grafschaft Hanau auf einem Vordruck mit handschriftlichen Eintragungen: „[...] Füge hiemit Manniglichen zuvernemmen, daß Ich auß gewiß und erheblichen Ursachen die samentliche Grafschafft Hanau [...] mit allen Pertinentien, Mobilien, und Immobilien, nichts davon außgenommen, in Schutz und Protection an- und auffgenommen habe [...]“. Franz von Mercy trat in bayerische, dann in kaiserliche Dienste. 1633 wurde er Oberst, 1638 Generalzeugmeister. 1641 vertrieb er Banér aus Regensburg und vernichtete 1643 das Korps des Generals Rantzau bei Tuttlingen. Zum Feldmarschall ernannt, eroberte er 1644 Freiburg und bestand im dortigen Lager einen hartnäckigen Kampf gegen die vereinigten Kräfte Condés und Turennes. Nachdem er bei Mergentheim mit Turenne den Marschall von Frankreich geschlagen hatte, fand er am 3. August 1645 in der Schlacht bei Alerheim den Tod. Mercys große Erfolge gegen französische Heere, die er mehrfach am Einfall in Süddeutschland hindern konnte, brachten ihm den Ruf als fähigsten Heerführer seiner Zeit ein.
