LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY, THE (2001 - 2003) - Prosthetic Hobbit FeetA pair of Hobbit feet from Peter Jackson's epic fantasy trilogy The Lord of the Rings. Because of their leathery tough soles and thick warm hair, Hobbits walked barefoot throughout the trilogy. This pair of foam-latex prosthetic Hobbit feet were made by the Weta Workshop make-up and prosthetics department. They were cast from individual moulds of the performer's feet, which were then enlarged and hand-painted in peachy skin tones, with a layer of real dark brown hair applied to the top of the foot. Hobbit feet like these were never typically reused, as they were glued to the actor's feet for filming, making it difficult to keep the prosthetics intact during the removal process. The lot exhibits wear from production use, including staining and peeling on the soles, and there is a small split at the ankle of the right foot. Dimensions (each): 24 cm x 12 cm x 10 cm (9.5" x 4 3/4" x 4") Estimate: £1,500 - 2,500 MThis lot will be auctioned on Sunday, November 6th. Made by the Elves of old, Glamdring was one of the wizard Gandalf's primary weapons, alongside his staff, which he carried with him throughout his mission to aid the Fellowship of the Ring. He notably wielded it during his battle with the Balrog, in which he used Glamdring to direct attacks of lightning, enabling him to defeat the demon. § Harold Cohen (British 1928-) Caradhras, 1967 signed, titled and dated (to reverse), acrylic on canvasDimensions:the canvas 100cm x 100cm (39 3/8in x 39 3/8in)Provenance:Provenance:Purchased directly from the Artist in July 1980 from a selling exhibition of his paintings at the Slade School of Fine Art, London prior to his departure to the U.S.A.;Private Collection, UK.Note: Exhibited:On long loan to the City Museum and Art Gallery, Birmingham, 1980-6. Despite being included in all the key exhibition of new British art in the 1960s – including the 1966 Venice Biennale as part of the show Five Young British Artists – Harold Cohen remains less well-known than many of his contemporaries. In part this could be due to his long parallel career in academia at UC San Diego, which began in the late 60s, but it could also be proof that it is possible – just sometimes – to be too far ahead of the curve for your own good, for Cohen has been mapping the worlds of computers and artificial intelligence since the former were a recent invention and the latter didn’t really exist. Indeed, Cohen’s experiments in fully computer-generated art in the 70s and 80s can be seen as crucial early enquiries into AI. He creation of AARON, a computer program designed to produce art autonomously, puts Cohen’s art in a space that is only just being occupied today – although today’s artist programmers seem intent in making their avatars paint figuratively, rather than ask them to evoke something of their own electric dreams.Carahadras is an imaginary place – the fateful mountain in Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings and Cohen no doubt was aware of Tolkein’s own beautiful maps of his unseen world. Yet everything about this painting – in the colours, in the way its painted – seems the opposite of Tolkein’s feudal, medieval landscape. Carahadras is irrefutably futuristic, diagrammatic – the green and red dots forming their own binary code, on shifting wafers of a motherboard. Yet elements, too, are very much of their time. The deliberate rotation of the square canvas to form a lozenge places the work in line with American minimalism of the same date – the likes of Ellsworth Kelly – and the work’s all over surface, with no real sense of there being a ‘foreground’ or ‘background’ locates the work within Clement Greenberg’s axioms for abstract art. It is therefore very much a 60s painting, albeit one that presages a future that was, at that point, only fiction.
A rare 'Ganga-jamuna' mail shirt Lahore, 19th Centuryof typical form with open front, long sleeves and single vent to back, formed of small iron, copper and brass rings creating a quatrefoil lattice, the border with lozenge bands, lozenge band running up one side of back 81 cm. longFootnotes:This fine mail shirt was produced from thousands of unusually small and unwelded rings resulting in an extremely flexible and light piece of armour. The use of contrasting metal rings is a technique known as 'Ganga-Jamuna' - the contrasting colours representing the churning waters at the confluence of two of India's most sacred rivers, the Ganges and the Yamuna. A Sikh turban helmet produced in Lahore with a camail bearing a lozenge design is published in Lord Egerton, Indian and Oriental Arms and Armour, London 1896, p. 134, fig. 33. Another set of armour with lozenged mail is also mentioned as having been 'worn at the court of Ranjit Singh' (p. 134, no. 703). A helmet with a camail of iron and brass rings in the Royal Armouries in Leeds is believed to have been worn personally by Ranjit Sing (acc. no. XXVIA.36). A Lahore mail coif armour using the same technique acquired by Lord Dalhousie following the annexation of the Punjab is now in the Toor Collection and is dated to circa 1840 (see Davinder Toor, In Pursuit of Empire, Treasures from the Toor Collection of Sikh Art, London, 2018, pp. 232-3.) Two further examples of mail shirts are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Acc. Nos. 36.25.57 and 36.25.22a).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
