Samuel John Peploe RSA (British, 1871-1935)Eilean Annraidh from the North End, Iona signed 'Peploe' (lower right)oil on board37 x 44.5cm (14 9/16 x 17 1/2in).Footnotes:The island of Iona was a hugely significant location within Peploe's painting life. Having visited for the first time in 1920, he returned almost every summer until his death in 1935, often accompanied by his friend and fellow painter, F. C. B. Cadell. The island is a place of great spiritual resonance and beauty, and it is this, paired with its rapidly changeable light and weather, which charged the landscape with an energy the artists were keen to capture in paint. In this place, the sand, sea, rocks, and distant coastlines provide an endless subject matter which Peploe clearly delighted in trying to bring to life in his work. The present lot shows a view from the North End with the small island of Eilean Annraidh and its stretch of beach visible. In the foreground Peploe has focussed on a particularly prominent rocky feature which he has captured through spontaneous lines to give both form and weight. In the distance one can see the Isle of Mull and the entrance to Loch Na Kiel. In Peploe's still lifes the palette is often dominated by bright bold colours and there is a clear desire from him to reach a degree of compositional perfection. In contrast to this, his Iona views feel refreshingly spontaneous in their composition, and they highlight his ability to work in a cool palette of blues, greens, and pinks. The present lot showcases these aspects of Peploe's work, whilst celebrating all those features of Iona which he loved so much. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

CHARLES BEVAN (1815-1891) FOR GILLOW & CO., LANCASTER & LONDON. SIDE CABINET, CIRCA 1866 walnut, inlaid with boxwood, amboyna and fruitwood timbers Dimensions:71cm wide, 107cm high, 40cm deep Provenance:Provenance; Possibly William Harrison (18**-1879), Samlesbury Hall, 1866 Paul Reeves, London 1992 Anissa Helou, Christies South Kensington, 19th May 1999, lot 602 Harris Lindsay, London, until 2000 Private British Collection until 2022 Paul Shutler Note: Literature: Croston, James The History of the Ancient Hall of Samlesbury in Lancashire', 1871 Croston for an engraving of the Great Hall showing a number of pieces of furniture that appear to follow Bevan's designs. Sotheby's, London The Best of British - Design from the 19th and 20th Centuries - Paul Reeves: The Auction, 20th March 2008, lot 81 for a related large cabinet, also potentially from the Harrison commission (£12,000). Coleman B. The Best of British Arts & Crafts, Atglen, PA, 2004, p.69Note: Along with Bruce Talbert, who exhibited a handful of 'medieval' or 'old English' pieces (including the Pericles cabinet now in the Metropolitan Museum, New York) on the Holland & Son stand at the 1867 Paris Exhibition, it is widely accepted that Charles Bevan's 1865 designs for Titus Salt Jr marked a turning point in British taste. This cabinet was one of a pair, which were split up between two friends shopping in London at Harris Lindsay circa 2000. The other cabinet was purchased by the academic collector Peter Rose (recently sold at Christie's London, 30th September 2021, Lot 110, as part of The Peter Rose and Albert Gallichan Collection (£12,000). Stamped 'GILLOW & CO' '2324' the Christie's example has a note in the provenance mentioning Samlesbury Hall in Lancashire. Although originally built in the 14th century, Samlesbury Hall was acquired by the industrialist Joseph Harrison (1805-1880) in 1862 and given to his son William Harrison (18** -1879). William Harrison spent a vast sum of money refurbishing the interiors and furnishing the hall. The Gillow estimate sketch books, held at the Westminster City archives, have records of him ordering numerous pieces of reformed gothic furniture in 1866. The commission includes pieces in Bevan's distinctive style but also in Pugin's.

“A non-commissioned officer’s patrole (sic) of the 14th Light Dragoons and 1st Hussars, from Arevalo, took in Blasco Sancho, on the evening of the 25th., shortly after the King had left the place, 2 officers and 27 of the King’s cavalry, who had been left there to follow his rear guard.” Wellington’s despatch to Earl Bathurst from Olmedo, 28 July 1812 refers. The historic and unique Peninsula awards to Troop Sergeant-Major William Hanley, 14th Light Dragoons, who is the only known instance of an N.C.O. being mentioned by name in Napier’s History of the Peninsula War, for his gallant exploit at Blasco Sancho on 25 July 1812, when his patrol of three men of the 14th Light Dragoons and four men of the 1st Hussars of the King’s German Legion captured a piquet of French cavalrymen numbering two officers, two N.C.O.’s and 27 Dragoons; awarded a special Silver Medal by the Officers of the regiment at a full dress parade to commemorate his exploit, he was present in every engagement fought by the regiment in the Peninsula and in North America, and was afterwards appointed Foreman of Stores at the Tower of London until his death on September 1859 Military General Service 1793-1814, 11 clasps, Talavera, Busaco, Fuentes D’Onor, Badajoz, Salamanca, Vittoria, Pyrenees, Nivelle, Nive, Orthes, Toulouse (W. Hanley, Troop Serjeant Major, 14th Light Dragoon) last letter of unit obscured by suspension claw; 14th Light Dragoons, unique silver medal for ‘Blasco Sancho 1812’, engraved, 38mm [Ref: Balmer R77], Obverse: within an engraved wreath ‘Fortitudine Blasco Sancho 26 July 1812. Peninsula.’ Reverse: within an engraved wreath ‘William Hanley Corporal 14th Light Dragoons’, with riveted silver clip and hinged straight bar and silver ribbon slide to contemporary original red ribbon with attached ivorine name label, minor edge bruise and very light contact marks, otherwise toned, good very fine (2) £14,000-£18,000 --- Provenance: Fleming Collection 1871; Seaforth (Stewart Mackenzie) Collection 1873; Eaton Collection 1880 (later Lord Cheylesmore) sold Glendining’s, July 1930; Leyland Robinson Collection, principally acquired and added to by F. J. Ridsdale of Johannesburg, and mainly dispersed by Spink & Son in the early to late 1970s; Alan Harrison Collection to present vendor. One officer and 17 other ranks of the 14th Light Dragoons received the maximum 11 clasps earned by the regiment, all with this same combination. (See Dix Noonan Webb, 17 February 2021, for the example to Sergeant George Kinch.)
This unique pair of medals has not been offered for public sale since the dispersal of Lord Cheylesmore’s Collection at Glendining’s in July 1930 when it is believed they were acquired by Professor A. Leyland Robinson, of Liverpool, who amassed an impressively large collection of Peninsula War medals (over 700 individual lots including many pairs and groups as well as gold awards), some, but not all, of which was consigned to auction through A. H. Baldwin’s at Glendining’s in October 1952 (128 lots) and February 1953 (132 lots). A substantial part of the collection was acquired privately by Francis J. Ridsdale, of Johannesburg, who added further to it, particularly in regard to Officers’ Gold Medals and Crosses. The present cataloguer had the privilege of handling most of this collection when it was consigned to Spink and Son in the early 1970s for private disposal. It is notable, however, that the pair to Hanley were not at that time disposed of, Mr Ridsdale having then recently acquired some original manuscript accounts of the Blasco Sancho affair [sold with Lot] which gave new importance to Hanley’s awards and were the subject of a lengthy article by F. J. Ridsdale published in the Numismatic Circular in April 1974, as follows: ‘SERGEANT-MAJOR HANLEY AND HIS AWARDS By F. J. Ridsdale, Johannesburg. As all collectors know, there were no general awards for gallantry or distinguished conduct in being at the time of the Napoleonic Wars, but on very rare occasions Regimental Colonels or the Regiments themselves awarded or subscribed for individual awards. Times and customs have also changed very considerably, because I think there is only one instance in Napier's History of the Peninsula War where someone, not an officer, is mentioned by name; Vol. IV of Warne's Edition, 1886, at page 279. The man was Sergeant-Major Hanley of the 14th Light Dragoons, who with a small patrol captured 29 Frenchmen at Blasco Sancho on the 25th July, 1812. I have long had in my collection Sergeant-Major Hanley's Military General Service with 11 bars for Talavera, Busaco, Fuentes D'Onor, Badajoz, Salamanca,, Vittoria, Pyrenees, Nivell, Nive, Orthes and Toulouse, which is the full tale of bars to the Regiment, and a Silver Medal presented to him by the Officers of the Regiment at a full dress parade to commemorate his exploit. The obverse has, within a wreath, "Fortitudine Blasco Sancho, 26th July 1812, Peninsula" and the reverse “William Hanley, Corporal, 14 Light Dragoons”. The medals were in the Stewart Mackenzie and Leyland Robinson collections, and the regimental medal is in Tancred at p. 311. Quite by chance I was able to purchase a short time ago, a letter written by the Duke of Wellington on the 5th May 1831 to Major, the Hon. W. F. de Roos which enclosed manuscript accounts, not only of that exploit, but of another which took place near Pamplona in July 1813. These read as follows: May 5th, 1831 My dear de Roos, Some time has elapsed since I ought to have returned you the enclosed papers. The man is a very good one, but I really do not know what I can now do for him. I have not the most distant recollection of the affair or of the Dispatch. The best thing to do would be to find the Dispatch; and then we will see how we can give the Man an authentic copy of it. Believe me ever yours most sincerely, Wellington (ENDORSEMENT) D. of Wellington Serjt Major Hanley Coventry Barracks 10th July, 1828 Honoured Sir, Agreeably to your desire I have the honour to transmit a Statement of the Capture of a Picquet of the Enemies Cavalry, consisting of Two Officers, one Serjeant and Twenty Six mounted Dragoons and one private Servant with Two Mules and Baggage at Blascho Sancho in Spain on the evening of the 25th July, 1812, by a Patrole under my command consisting of Four men 1st German Hussars, and four of the 14th Lt. Dragoons. As soon as the Brigade arrived at Arévola and Picquets posted, I was ordered to proceed with the Patrole as far as Blascho Sancho to ascertain the route of the enemy, my party being small and in an open country it was necessary to move with great precaution. I accordingly sent one Dragoon 200 yards to my right front, another as far to the left, and a third, one hundred yards in advance, ordering them to keep each other in sight as much as possible (and also the patrole) to circle when in sight of the enemy, or fire if suddenly attacked. The Dragoon on my right front (Private Luke Billington 14th Lt. Dn) owing to some accident discharged his Pistol, wounded his horse in the shoulder, and was consequently unfit to proceed. This happened about 7 miles from Blascho Sancho, he was replaced by one of my party and we proceeded until the advanced Dragoon circled; I trotted to the foot of the hill and dismounted the men, I walked to the top and placed myself behind a stone cross where I had a perfect view of a column of Infantry on parade. We waited some time till at length they marched off and disappeared behind an opposite hill. I mounted the Patrole and galloped for that part of the Town they had le...

Jack Butler Yeats RHA (1871-1957) On a Western Quay/ Sligo Quay (1923) Oil on panel, 23 x 35.5cm (9 x 14”) Signed Provenance: Sir Patrick Ford, London; With J. Leger & Son, Old Bond Street, London, November 1942 label verso; Sale, these rooms 16 March 1978, lot 114; Private Collection, Dublin.Exhibited: Dublin, Stephen’s Green Gallery, April/May 1923, Drawings and Pictures of Life in the West of Ireland, cat. no.24; New York, Society of Independent Artists, Annual Exhibition, March 1924; London, Tooth, Pictures of Irish Life, cat. no. 33; London, Leger Galleries, October 1942, London Group 4th Wartime Exhibition.Literature: Listener (6 April 1942); Hilary Pyle, A Catalogue Raisonné of The Oil Paintings, Andre Deutsch, 1992, cat. no. 193.Bounded by a spectacular West of Ireland landscape, a sailor leans against a wooden building, its planked construction giving a sense of structure and solidity to the right hand side of the painting. Its starkness makes the surrounding scenery appear even more fantastical.  A high mountain dominates the vista with a large ascendancy house to its left. In the centre huddled along a causeway are a line of comparatively tiny cottages. Hilary Pyle has identified the location as Drumcliffe, the area north of Sligo town, under the shadow of Ben Bulben, where W. B. Yeats was later buried and where the Yeats’s paternal grandfather was once the clergyman.¹ The rugged shaped mountain has also been identified as Knocknarea, to the south of Sligo town, on a note on a label on the reverse.  It is not possible to identify the specific location.  Yeats seems to have exaggerated the details of the view for dramatic effect as he did in many of his later epic paintings such as On Through the Silent Lands (1951, Ulster Museum) and Two Travellers (1942, Tate Gallery), both of which feature similar glacial peaks. Here the juxtaposition of the large house and the sheer limestone cliff face of the mountainside convey a familiar congruence of manmade splendour and the more sublime beauty of nature as it exists in the West of Ireland. This, as in all Yeats’s work, is painted from memory and may combine different elements in the one composition. The details are probably gleaned partly from the perusal of earlier sketches. The man is dressed in a dark double breasted, marine style jacket and a peaked cap, like that of the pilot, a recurring figure in the work of Yeats. The pilot is based on Michel Gillen, who worked at Rosses Point when Yeats was a child living with his grandparents in Sligo. Gillen’s job was to guide merchant ships from Rosses Point along the Garavogue River to the quayside in Sligo town. The pilot’s job required great skill in navigation and sailing as well as a deep knowledge and understanding of the geography and conditions of the Garavogue and its environs. He appears in several of Yeats’s drawings and paintings, often in or near the Pilot House, a look-out hut, which was located on the headland at Rosses Point, and from where he could watch for the arrival of ships into the river mouth. In a contemporary work, Pilot Comes Ashore, (1923, Private Collection) the pilot stands on a quay in front of Knocknarea.² In Sligo Quay, he appears as an outsider in the depths of the countryside, his pose retaining a nautical stance. This solitary male figure in an expansive landscape that moves between water and mountain becomes a major theme in Yeats’s later work. Here the traveller is the pilot man who waits patiently for his boat to arrive rather than the nomads of the later work. He contemplates the incoming tide instead of the magnificent landlocked world beside him. The mixture of the building types in this space – the large colonial mansion and modest dwellings - denotes the complex history of rural Ireland. When the painting was made in 1923, the conflict generated by this past was raging throughout the land, and the solemn pose of the figure and the quiet calm of the view could be seen to reflect contemporary political and social tension. It shares the clarity of vision, psychological intensity, and rich colour with such other work of this period as the Island Funeral (1923, Model Sligo), Liffey Swim (1923, NGI) and Early Morning, Glasnevin (1923, Private Collection). The stone bollard on the quayside demarcates the foreground of the painting. Its solid form casts a shadow across the stone blocks of the quay, leading to the pilot. Touches of red in the sky suggest the slow dissent of the sun which casts its intense light on the gables of the houses and on the mountain cliffs in the distance, also heightened in red tones. Movement is conveyed by the blue turquoise torrent of the water and the cloud strewn sky above, a subtle indication of change and energy in the otherwise tranquil scene. The painting was exhibited in Dublin in 1923, at the Society of Independent Artists in New York in 1924, at the Goupil Gallery, London in 1925 and in the Leger Galleries in London in 1942.  It belonged to the Scottish politician and art collector, Sir Patrick Ford for many years. Dr Róisín Kennedy (July 2023) H.Pyle, Jack B. An interesting mid 19th century French gorge cased carriage clock with historical inscriptionthe movement numbered 637the rippled handle over an oval inspection window and bold cornice to glazed sides and a moulded base, the cornice engraved TONIGHT AT EIGHT, the base further engraved Wm. E GLADSTONE TO HENRY SEDLEY - LONDON - MAY 21ST 1864, the white rectangular Roman and Arabic enamel dial with Breguet style moon hands, the movement with silvered jewelled English lever escapement striking the hours and half-hours on a gong, 18cms high Footnotes:William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898) was a British Liberal politician and Prime Minister for four non-consecutive terms. He also served as Chancellor of the Exchequer. He was behind many reforms, such as the Trade Union Act of 1871 and pushed for individual liberty and to loosen political and economic restraints. He opposed several wars and was a careful manager of state finances. In 1864 - the year that he gifted this clock to Henry Sedley - he made a speech in which he stated that in principle he did not see why all men could not be enfranchised. The recipient of the clock, Henry Sedley is almost certainly the American journalist who visited England from circa 1862 to 1865. During this time, he published two novels; 'Dangerfield's Rest: A Romance' in 1864, and 'Marion Rooke; or, the Quest for Fortune' in 1865. It has not been possible to ascertain the nature of the relationship between the two men, nor the relevance of the inscription 'Tonight at Eight'. Sedley was born in Boston in 1835 and died in New York City in 1899. During a long career, he was one of the editors of the New York Evening Post, Times, and Commercial Advertiser; founder and, for a time, editor of the Round Table. A rare and well-documented ‘War of the Axe’ South Africa Medal 1834-53 awarded to Major General E. J. Dickson, 91st Highlanders, who had his horse shot from under him and was Mentioned in Despatches for his gallantry whilst commanding the small advanced party at the attack and loss of a 46-wagon convoy at Trompeter's Drift on 21 May 1846 - his detailed (and unpublished) journal, included with the lot, is an important first-hand account of the service of an officer in South Africa during the period South Africa 1835-53 (Lieut E. J. Dickson, 91st Regt) with top silver Hunt and Roskell riband buckle with gold pin, edge nicks, good very fine £2,600-£3,000 --- Edward John Dickson was born on Jersey on 16 May 1821 and was commissioned Ensign in the 75th Foot in 1839. He served in the Cape of Good Hope from 26 July 1840, until mid-1848, initially with the 75th Foot, before transferring to the 91st Foot. During his service in the ‘War of the Axe’, 1846-7, he was Mentioned in Despatches and was highly commended for his gallantry at the attack and loss of the convoy at Trompeter's Drift on 21 May 1846. Here he commanded the advanced party, having his horse shot from under him and subsequently commanding a defence until ammunition was expended. The Action at Trompeter’s Drift Historical Records of the 91st Argyllshire Highlanders gives the following account: ‘Lieut. Dickson of the reserve battalion of the 91st, while commanding at Trompeter's Drift, frequently obtained the approbation of Sir Peregrine Maitland and Lt.-Col. Johnston for his great zeal and activity; and on the 21st of May, when a convoy of waggons, proceeding from Grahamstown and Fort Peddie, was attacked and captured by the enemy on Trompeter's Hill, the gallant conduct of Lt. Dickson, who had voluntarily joined the escort, was highly commended by his Excellency the commander-in-chief, in general orders. In reference to this incident, Mrs Ward writes as follows: “On this occasion Lieut. Dickson, 91st Regiment, who had been ordered to assist in escorting the waggons a certain distance, till the other escort was met, nobly volunteered to proceed further, and led the advance; nor did he retire till his ammunition was expended. On reaching the rear, he found the commanding officer of the party retreating, by the advice of some civilians, who considered the defile impassable for so many waggons, under such a fire. Lieut. Dickson's coolness, courage, and energy, in not only leading the men, but literally ‘putting his shoulder to the wheel’ of a waggon, to clear the line, were spoken of by all as worthy of the highest praise. His horse, and that of Ensign Aitchison, were shot under their riders”.’ A much larger article on the disaster was published in the Cape Town Mail on 23 May 1846, of which the following is an extract: ‘The advanced guard had reached the summit of the first ridge and were just about to descend the opposite side when the Caffres, who had posted themselves in the thick bush and rocks by the road side, opened a heavy fire upon the party, killing lieutenant Dickson’s horse under him, a horse belonging to Lieutenant Aitchison and also a Fingoe. The moment the first volley was fired, the burghers under Lieutenant Dickson, plunged into the bush and gained this position. Mr Lucas, at the same moment fell back to the front wagon and was quickly joined by Lieutenant Dickson. They endeavoured to push their way through the bush with the wagon but on reaching the spot where the first volley had been poured upon them, they were met again with a most destructive fire by which seven of the oxen were shot dead, which as they fell, were cut away from the yokes in hopes with the rest might struggle through the pass. At this time there were only five oxen left and it was impossible that these unaided should draw the wagon forward, the Caffres still pouring fire upon them. Lieutenant Dickson and Mr Lucas put their shoulders to the wheel and by this means, and some of the men of the 91st goading the oxen with the points of their bayonets, the vehicle was at length got down the hill to the open space before described. Here the party with Lieutenant Dickson’s burghers, took up a good position. It was however found that though they had worked their way out of this perilous situation, yet the second wagon had to pass through the same ordeal. The Caffres on its approach opened their fire upon it, which was steadily and vigorously returned by the men of the 91st. This firing lasted about ten minutes, when upon it suddenly ceasing, a large body of Caffres was seen moving down the main road, apparently with the intention of cutting off communication between the party and the rest of the wagons. Lieutenant Dickson then deemed it advisable to fall back upon the second wagon, on reaching which it was found to be partially deserted, retreat having been made to the wagons in the rear. The Caffres again opened up a most destructive fire upon this gallant little party and by which two civilians were killed and several horses. Those who were spared struggled down the long train of wagons to the rear, where they at length found Captain Campbell, who immediately gave the order to retreat. The casualties in this disastrous affair are, as far as we have been able to collect them; four men killed; one of Mr Lucas’s severely wounded and also a man from the 7th Dragoon Guards. From sixteen to eighteen horses are reported to be killed, together with forty-one wagons, with all their oxen and stores.’ Lieutenant Dickson also gives a three page account of the episode in his journal. During the action, Captain Campbell, who commanded the company of the 91st that was escorting the convoy, inexplicably failed to support Lieutenant Dickson and his small band of men who were the advance guard of the convoy. He was afterward Court Martialed and subsequently cashiered from the service. Before leaving South Africa in June 1848, Dickson also served for a period in Charge of the Fingoe Levies at Fort Hare. Post South Africa, Dickson's military career included an expensive purchase as Captain in the Ceylon Rifle Regiment on 13 April 1849. Rising through the ranks, he retired as a Major-General on 20 March 1878. Mauro Antonio Tesi, Italian 1730-1766- Design for an architectural cartouche; traces of black chalk, pen and brown ink on laid paper, bears Edmond Fatio's collector's stamp 'EF' (Lugt 3472) (lower right), 20.9 x 14.8 cm. Provenance: Edmond Fatio (1871-1959) (Lugt 3472). [Presumably] His sale, Nicolas Rauch S.A., Geneva, 3-4 June 1959. Private Collection, UK. Note: Tesi's oeuvre consists almost exclusively of architectural and decorative designs, many of which depict solely small sections of a façade or an interior in a manner which provides the viewer with a tantalising glimpse into generally ornate settings. Edmond Fatio (1871-1959) was a Swiss architect and collector, with a particular focus on architectural drawings and designs. At least two other drawings by Tesi were owned by Fatio: one of similar dimensions to the present work which sold at Christie's, London, 27 September 2016, lot 51 (£3,000), and another which is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York [no.63.592.17].
