NIKOLAI KALMAKOV (RUSSIAN 1873-1955) Hebe and the Eagle of Jupiter, 1926 oil on paperboard 39.5 x 56 cm (15 1/2 x 22 in.) monogrammed and dated lower left PROVENANCENoble Collection, since the 1930sThence by descentSotheby`s London, June 9, 2010 lot 268LOT NOTESThere is an undeniable, pulsing undercurrent of eroticism found throughout Nikolai Kalmakov`s oeuvre. A member of the ascetic Skoptzy movement, Kalamakov eschewed the company of women, including that of his wife. In his works one is frequently faced with the menacing femme fatale, threatening to lead astray and consume her male victim. In the present lot, we see the sensuous nude body of Hebe, the goddess of youth, encircled by a lustrous cascade of red hair, presented before her father in the form of an eagle. By removing from the composition the cup of ambrosia Hebe is meant to be presenting to the eagle of Jupiter, Kalmakov places the main focus on to the tension between the two figures in the still, star-filled night.

* Freud (Sigmund, 1856-1939). Autograph letter signed, 'Freud', 39 Elsworthy Road, London, NW3, 21 June 1938, [to Margaret Stonborough-Wittgenstein], following the Freud family's emigration from Vienna to London, saying that the amulet has so far proven its worth and that the journey was easy and the reception in England flatteringly pleasant, continuing to say that the weather is good and that their makeshift home, picked by their architect son, is comfortable with the garden and view of Primrose Hill Park being ample replacement for Grinzing, where they would now have had Gauleiter [Josef] Bürckel [1895-1944] as a neighbour, then changing tone in respect of the black-edged paper of her letter and his shock at her news [the suicide of her ex-husband Jerome Stonborough], and saying he can well imagine what a painfully conflicted emotional state this must have put her in, concluding with questions about what she will now do and sending his deepest sympathy, written in clear blue ink on letterhead, 2 pages, 8voMargaret Stonborough-Wittgenstein (1882-1958) was the sister of the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein and the pianist Paul Wittgenstein. She was the subject of a famous 1905 portrait painted for her wedding, to art collector and wealthy American Jerome Stonborough (1873-1938), by the artist Gustav Klimt. The couple had two sons and divorced in 1938; Jerome committed suicide shortly thereafter on 15 June, just six days before this letter. After the First World War Stonborough-Wittgenstein was appointed as special representative of the American Relief Program for Austria. When working in juvenile prisons as a psychotherapy adviser, she came into contact with Sigmund Freud and was analysed by him over the course of two years, then remaining in contact until Freud's death. In 1926 she commissioned her brother Ludwig and the architect Paul Engelmann to design and build Haus Wittgenstein in Vienna. In 1940 she emigrated to the US, but returned to Austria after the war and obtained restitution of part of her wealth which had been confiscated by the Nazis. She moved back into Haus Wittgenstein until her death in 1958, passing the house on to her son, Thomas. On 4 June 1938, Sigmund Freud, with his wife Martha, and their daughter Anna left Vienna forever, boarding a train to take them to Paris, and from there to London, arriving on 6 June. Hitler’s annexation of Austria to Germany on 13 March had placed Austrian Jews in immediate danger. Within days, Freud’s apartment and publishing house had been raided, and a week later, Anna was arrested and questioned by the Gestapo. Freud's four sisters remained in Vienna and were all murdered in Nazi concentration camps. Freud was a collector of amulets, particularly phallic ones, and it seems that Margaret must have given him one as a good luck travel talisman before they left Vienna. The Freud family stayed only briefly at Elsworthy Road before moving nearby to 20 Maresfield Gardens, now the home of the Freud Museum. A full transcription and translation is available on request. Mathieu Molitor, (German 1873 - 1929), a patinated bronze model of a youth, 'Gürtelbinder’, portrayed standing and nude, looking downwards towards his belt held in both hands, his tousled hair held with a band, wearing sandals; on a naturalistically cast circular base, 132cm high; atop a faceted cylindrical oak veneered pine pedestal, 113cm high; height overall, 245cm CATALOGUE NOTES: Mathieu Molitor was a sculptor, painter and printmaker working in the context of the Jugendstil movement. This model shows the early, more academically inclined part of Molitor’s oeuvre. Conceived during the artist’s stay in Rome in 1907, the model's substantial size and classically rendered anatomy echo the Ancient grandeur of the city. The pose could be derived from the Ancient Greek ‘Apoxyomenos’ sculptures, which show nude athletes with their hands in similar positions. The graceful youth, particularly his posture, is also similar to the central figure in a small oil painting by Molitor, which was sold at Nagel Auktionen on 30 March 1996. Though several smaller versions of this model circulate, produced by Berlin’s Gladenbeck foundry during the 1920s, the present near life-size example is much rarer and could even be an early cast after the original wax model. This wax model is mentioned in the catalogue that accompanied the exhibition ‘Mathieu Molitor. Bildhauer, Maler, Grafiker’ at Leipzig’s Museum der Bildenden Künste in 2009 (1). The two other large casts cited in the catalogue include the one in the Leipzig museum’s own collection, and the version in the courtyard of the University of Jena (Thuringia, Germany). In the same entry, the author also mentions an unsigned version, presumably much like the present example, at one time in the possession of the artist’s daughter. A smaller version of the model was recently sold at Scheublein Art & Auktionen in Munich, 29th June 2018, Lot 340. The model is described and illustrated in Birgit Hartung et al. (ed.), ‘Mathieu Molitor. Bildhauer, Maler, Grafiker. Anlässlich der Ausstellung im Kreismuseum Bitburg-Prüm, 30. April - 16. August 2009’, Leipzig: Passage-Verlag, 2009, pp. 46-47.

The painting on offer here is characteristic of the work he produced for the firm, its circular format indicating that it was possibly a design for a charger.

'The Building News' commented in the November 24th edition that 'our double-page illustration this week gives some detailed drawings of the four figure subjects of the series of eight from the painted windows of a new billiard-room lately built at Court-green, Leighton-court-road, Streatham for Mr J. Chapple Esq.' and later in the December 1st edition that 'The work was executed by Messrs Saunders & Co of Endell-street, from cartoons by Mr F. Smith'.The painted glass panels, of which the current lot was one of eight, occupied the upper portion of a bay window and a further window in the room. The rest of the room was decorated in the 'Pompeian style' with walls painted with panels 'illustrative of Greek mythology' and 'specially designed' furniture. The illustrations show the designs for the current painted glass panel and the seven others entitled 'Dice'; 'Billiards'; 'Draughts'; 'Chess'; 'Cards'; 'Dominoes'; and 'Tossing'.
