Sichem I, Christoffel van -- Phantasiebildnis eines Mannes mit Federbarett und Handschuh. Holzschnitt nach Hendrick Goltzius. 31 x 20,8 cm. 1607. B. 3, Hollstein (Goltzius) 399, Hollstein (Sichem) 135, Leesberg (New Hollstein, Goltzius) 733. Wz. Bekröntes Wappen mit schreitendem Vierfüßler.Mit dem Phantasiebildnis eines Mannes in Tracht des 16. Jahrhunderts, das früher irrtümlicherweise als Portrait Otto Heinrich von Schwarzenbergs galt, übersetzt Christoffel van Sichem auf kongeniale Weise und unter Berücksichtigung der markanten Linienführung eine Federzeichnung von Hendrick Goltzius in das Medium des Holzschnitts. Goltzius hatte in den Jahren zwischen 1599 und 1608 eine Reihe von gezeichneten Phantasieporträts ausgeführt, die in ihrer Manier die archaisierende Stilsprache von Albrecht Dürer und Lucas van Leyden aufnehmen. Van Sichem, Sohn des aus Sichem (Brabant) ausgewanderten Buchhändlers Cornelis Karelsz., schuf mehrere Arbeiten nach Vorlagen von Goltzius. - Ganz ausgezeichneter, in einzelnen Stellen minimal trockener Druck mit der äußeren Einfassung. Verso in der unteren Blatthälfte vereinzelte Flecken, diese schwach nach recto durchschlagend, sorgsam ausgebesserte Randmängel, die rechte Außenkante etwa mit ergänzten Fehlstellen und partiell retuschierter Einfassungslinie, die oberen Ecken wohl montierungsbedingt lädiert, die rechte wieder angesetzt und mit säuberlich retuschierten Ausbesserungen und einem Einrisschen, der Gesamteindruck gleichwohl schön. Ausgezeichneter, klar zeichnender Druck links und oben bis in die Einfassung beschnitten, rechts und unten innerhalb derselben mit leichtem Darstellungsverlust. Unauffällig geglättete Falt- und Knickspuren verso, leicht angestaubt und fleckig, zwei unmerkliche Randausbesserungen teils mit säuberlichen Retuschen, verso mit Leimspuren und Hinterfaserungen, dünne Stellen, sonst in gleichwohl guter Erhaltung. Provenance: Property from the Phillip Lucas Collection, Spitalfields House This south-facing view of the Thames depicts the old York Water Gate and the York House water pump spire in the foreground, with Westminster Bridge, the old Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey in the distance. A similar view can be seen in the 1746-1755 painting by Canaletto, now at Penrhyn Castle, Gwynedd (NT 1420346). Condition Report: The canvas has been lined and cleaned.
