Fletcher Jamieson, the famous Rhodesian rancher, professional ivory hunter and pioneer photographer. Other Notes: Fletcher Jamieson began his hunting career with a Holland & Holland .500/.450 nitro express double rifle but following an accident changed to a W.J. Jeffery .500 (Rimless) Mauser bolt-action rifle which he used exclusively for a decade taking over 300 elephants with it. He had seen a German-made .500 bolt rifle by Schuler at Mitchell & Fallon's gun shop in Salisbury (Harare) and was taken by the ballistic capabilities of the .500 round but was not impressed with the German rifle. He straight away ordered a .500 from W.J. Jeffery in London which was completed in July 1937. Jamieson was a close friend of John 'Pondoro' Taylor, famed hunter and author of African Rifles and Cartridges, and supplied all the photographs that illustrate Taylor's book. Specific mention is made to Jamieson's Jeffery rifle in the chapter on large bore rifles, Taylor noting that Jamieson specified a 26in. barrel over the normal 24in. to aid balance given his great height. Jamieson died in 1947 in an unfortunate accident whilst working on a well, cutting short the career of one of the last of the great African hunters.

This rifle appears to be little used. Other Notes: The makers have kindly confirmed that this rifle was complete in 1968.

WINCHESTER. A RARE .44 (HENRY CENTRE-FIRE) 'MODEL 1866' (3rd MODEL) LEVER-ACTION REPEATING CARBINE, serial no. 89550, circa 1872, 20 1/2in. sighted barrel (black powder proved in 2009) retaining traces of original blued finish signed 'WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT.' with King's Improvement patent dates, rear-sight calibrated to 900 yards, full length tubular magazine, brass receiver marked with serial number and the initials 'F.S.' behind the trigger, 13 1/2in. stock (some bruising), brass butt-plate with sliding trap-cover (iron parts with some surface corrosion and discolouration).

REMINGTON. A .22-250 (REM.) 'MODEL 700' BOLT-MAGAZINE SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. C6737633, 24in. blued nitro barrel (rear-sight element removed), blued receiver fitted with Burris mounts and rings, 13 1/2in. pistolgrip stock, raised cheek-piece, chequered grip and fore-end, sling eyes, in universal case.

MAUSER. A 7X64mm 'MOD. 66' BOLT-MAGAZINE SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. G30603, 65cm. blued nitro sighted barrel, fitted with a Zeiss 'Diasta' 8x52 telescopic sight in quick detachable mounts, blued receiver with bright telescoping bolt engraved on each side with a woodland scene involving roe deer on one side and red deer on the other, 14 1/2in/ figured pistolgrip stock including 3/4in. ventilated rubber recoil-pad, raised Monte Carlo cheek-piece, grip and fore-end each carved with panels of foliage, set triggers, sling mounts.

A FINE GERMAN 9.3X62mm BOLT-MAGAZINE SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. 3123, 55cm. blued nitro barrel marked 'CAL. 9,3X62 NR. 3123' in gold, matt ramp-mounted bead fore-sight, scroll engraved matt block-mounted rear-sight of two folding leaves each with gold-inlaid centre-line, case-hardened scroll engraved receiver, fitted with a Schmidt & Bender 1.25-4x20 telescopic sight in quick detachable mounts, 14in. well figured pistolgrip stock, raised cheek-piece, chequered grip and fore-end, ebony fore-end cap, case-hardened scroll engraved pistolgrip- cap with hinged trap-cover with gold-inlaid initials, case-hardened scroll engraved magazine floor-plate and trigger -guard, sling eyes. This rifle appears to be very little used.

* A GERMAN 7X57mm BOLT-MAGAZINE SPORTING RIFLE REBARRELLED BY W.J. JEFFERY & CO., serial no. 35799, 23 3/4in. blued nitro barrel signed 'NEW BARREL BY. W.J. JEFFERY & CO. LTD., 26 BURY ST., ST. JAMES' LONDON S.W.', block-mounted bead fore-sight, block-mounted rear-sight of one standing and two folding leaves, blued receiver, 15in. figured pistolgrip stock, chequered grip and fore-end, horn fore-end cap and pistolgrip-cap, set triggers, silver escutcheon, sling eyes, in full length leather rifle case, the lid initialled 'J.M.S.'. Provenance : Air Marshal Sir John Maitland Salmond, GCB, CMG, CVO, DSO with Bar, and by decent to the vendor Joy Bell, Salmond's eldest grandchild. Other Notes: Salmond used this rifle for hunting whilst in South Africa and Nigeria at the beginning of his military career. Salmond graduated from Sandhurst in 1901 and saw action in the closing stages of the second Boer War with the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment. He joined the West African Frontier Force in 1903 but was soon returned to England as medically unfit. Salmond learned to fly in 1912 and commanded several Royal Flying Corps formations during the First World War and became Director-General of Military Aeronautics at the War Office. Upon creation of the RAF he was promoted to General Officer Commanding the RAF in the Field leading the RAF Iraq Command in 1923/4 and helped suppress rebellious troops for King Feisal. He was appointed Chief of the Air Staff in 1930 relinquishing this post in 1933 when he was appointed Marshal of the Royal Air Force.

B5839, 28in. blued nitro barrel, block-mounted bead fore-sight with hinged tunnel-cover, block-mounted rear-sight of one standing and two folding leaves calibrated to 300 yards, blued receiver marked 'ROSS RIFLE CO. QUEBEC. CANADA. 1905 PATENTED', 14 1/2in. figured pistolgrip stock with chequered grip and fore-end, silver escutcheon, sling eyes, in full length brass-cornered canvas and leather rifle case, the lid with George Gibbs trade label.

E. SCHMIDT & HABERMANN. AN 8X57mm BOLT-MAGAZINE SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. 5546, 23 1/2in. blued nitro barrel (proved in 2009) with full length raised matt sighting rib and signed 'E. SCHMIDT & HABERMANN' and 'SUHL I/TH', bead fore-sight, rear-sight of one standing and one folding leaf, border engraved receiver with matt receiver-ring, fitted with bases for quick detachable scope mounts, 14 1/2in. figured pistolgrip stock including 1/2in. rubber recoil pad, raised cheek-piece, chequered grip and schnabel fore-end, engraved mounts including magazine floor-plate with lever locking-catch and hinged bullet-trap cover on the underside of the butt, rounded pistolgrip-cap with gold-inlaid crest, sling mounts, and brown leather sling.

W.J. JEFFERY & CO. A .333 (RIMLESS NITRO EXPRESS) BOLT-MAGAZINE CROSS-OVER STOCK SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. 23545, 25in. nitro barrel signed 'W.J. JEFFERY & CO. LTD. 13 KING ST. ST. JAMES, LONDON. S.W.', ramp-mounted fore-sight with crude element, block-mounted rear-sight of one standing and two folding leaves numbered from '1' to '5', blued receiver tapped for scope mounts, 14 1/2in. pistolgrip stock (small repair to toe of butt), chequered grip and fore-end, sling mounts, leather sling.

A .303 'LEE SPEED PATENTS' BOLT-MAGAZINE RIFLE OF SERVICE TYPE, serial no. 20110, 30 1/4in. nitro barrel (reproved in 2009) sighted to 1,800 yards, fore-sight with Parker protector, receiver with dust- cover and magazine cut-off, 13 1/4in. semi-pistolgrip stock, long range volley sights, sling mounts, leather shoulder sling and leather target sling.

STEYR. A .308 (WIN.) MANNLICHER 'MOD. L' BOLT-MAGAZINE SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. 23997, 60cm. blued spirally fluted nitro sighted barrel, receiver mounted with a Weaver 'K4-F' telescopic sight in quick detachable mounts, 13 3/4in. figured pistolgrip stock including 3/4in. ventilated rubber recoil pad, raised Monte Carlo comb, chequered grip and fore-end, sling mounts, leather sling.

STEYR. A .308 (WIN.) MANNLICHER 'MOD. SSG.69' BOLT-MAGAZINE SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. 145092, 65cm. nitro sighted barrel, receiver fitted with a Khales 'ZF69' 6x42 telescopic sight in quick detachable mounts, 13 3/4in. figured pistolgrip stock including 1 3/4in. factory plastic extension, stippled swelled grip and fore-end, the left side of the butt with presentation plaque engraved 'PRESENTED BY MAJ. A 6.5mm (MS) 'M.1903' BOLT-MAGAZINE SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. 66 (partially obscured by scope mount), 22 1/2in. blued sighted nitro barrel, blued receiver, fitted with a period German telescopic sight marked 'ZUM SCHARFSTELLEN' and in tunnel mounts, 14 1/2in. figured pistolgrip stock, raised cheek-piece, chequered grip and fore-end, sling mounts, leather sling.

CARL GUSTAF. A 7mm (REM. MAG.) BOLT-MAGAZINE SPORTING RIFLE SHOT & REGULATED BY HOLLAND & HOLLAND, serial no. 279, 60cm. blued nitro sighted barrel signed 'SHOT AND REGULATED BY HOLLAND & HOLLAND, 13 BRUTON STREET, LONDON' (fore-sight missing), blued receiver, 14in. pistolgrip stock with Monte Carlo comb, chequered grip and fore-end.

ARMURERIE VAN HEER, NAMUR. A FINE 9.3X62mm BOLT-MAGAZINE STUTZEN SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. 1083, 21 3/4in. blacked barrel signed 'ARMURERIE VAN HEER - NAMUR', matt ramp-mounted bead fore- sight, block-mounted standing rear-sight with gold-inlaid centre-line, blacked receiver, 15 3/8in. well figured pistolgrip including 7/8in. rubber recoil pad, raised cheek-piece, chequered grip and fore-end, blacked mounts including pistolgrip-cap with gold-inlaid initials 'AB', sling eyes. This rifle appears to be very little used.

A BOER WAR 7mm 'MODEL 1896' BOLT-MAGAZINE SERVICE RIFLE, serial no. 3853, 29in. blued barrel (proved in 2009) sighted to 2,000 metres, blued receiver, 13 1/8in. straight-hand stock marked with the silver- inlaid initials 'P-O' on the right side of the butt, blued mounts, sling mounts (some wear to finish), German inspection marks, matching numbers throughout.

MAUSER. A FINE .416 (RIGBY) ANNIVERSARY '1898-1998' DOUBLE SQUARE BRIDGE MAGNUM BOLT- MAGAZINE BIG GAME RIFLE, serial no. R50/100, 25 3/4in. blacked nitro barrel marked with Mauser banner and '1898 1998' at the breech, matt ramp-mounted bead fore-sight, block-mounted rear-sight of one standing and two folding leaves, blacked receiver marked 'MAUSER WERKE OBERNDORF A/N' on the side-wall, 15in. figured pistolgrip stock including 3/4in. rubber recoil-pad, raised cheek-piece, chequered grip and fore-end, sling mounts, in original close-fitted full length leather rifle case lined in dark blue baize, with original factory test target. This rifle appears to be virtually unused.
