1972, playbill, The Royal Court Theatre, cast includes Jill Bennett and Denholm Elliott; 52 x 33.5cm (framed), together with nine copies of Henrik Ibsen's original play and John Osborne's adaptation; a Shropshire magazine featuring an interview with John Osborne; and a Royal College of Arts doctoral certificate awarded 3rd July 1970 (16)Hedda Gabler opened at the Royal Court on 28th June 1972. Osborne had written the new English language version of Ibsen's classic specifically for his wife Jill Bennett to star in. 'With her colonnial background, her pretensions and her volatility, Osborne saw her as very much a Hedda-like character. Certainly he saw both women as having a sharp wit but little authentic humour, women who had been born bored. Hedda he noted is a snob but she also has the saving graces of energy, spontaneity and a loathing of hypocrisy, the qualities that on a good day Osborne most admired in Jill.' (Whitebrook, p. 287). Despite some positive reviews, however, to Osborne's disappointment Hedda Gabler failed to transfer from the Royal Court to the West End, the first time this had happened in over a decade. Qty: 16
