An Advertising Fan by Georges Redon. The French artist (869-1943) famous for his Art Nouveaux poster work and magazine illustrations, also created a series of humorous fan leaves, this being an example used as advertising for the Carlton Hotel and Restaurant London, depicting a small dog keeping a watchful eye on advances being made towards his mistress by a gentleman with perhaps doubtful intent. Together with A 20th Century Fan, advertising the Pavilion Royale, Bois de Boulogne, the double paper leaf mounted on lightly decorated wooden sticks, the leaf depicting a young maid attempting to evade the advances of a suitor but hampered by grape vines in her path, the reserves with portraits of young and elegant ladies. The verso bears the attribution of P. Tete Evantailliste; and An Advertising Fan, for ''Grands Magazins de Nouveautés Les Fils de M. Cieuzel et Cie Le Caire, an imposing store building and showing fashionable ladies walking past, motor cars on the street, circa 1900. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm; 8.5 inches or 22cm; and 9 inches or 23cm (3) ''Le Caire'' is French for Cairo, but also the name of a Commune in Provence-Alps-Cote d'Azur. However, the car drivers are seated on the right and from 1882 Cairo was occupied by the British, up to the 1950's.

Together with A Small Early 20th Century Silk Fan, mounted on cream sticks of a man made material, the silk leaf depicting Rinaldo in the Gardens of Armida. Guard length 7.75 inches or 19.5cm (2) This leaf is known to have been available in the uncut form as a gift from one of the Ladies Magazines and in at least two sizes. The uncut form has the name of the scene and the magazine name printed beneath the image.
