A large Italian Maiolica tin glazed earthenware charger, with a large all-over scene, titled to the reverse 'The Trojan Chief Was Laid on Tyber's Banks, Oppressed with Grief and Found in Filemt Slumber, Late Relief Then, Thro the Shadows of the Poplar Wood, Erofe the Father of the Roman Flood' (sic), initialled 'JRC' and dated 1888, with various impressed marks and also titled/coded colour swatches to the back, diameter 52.5cm. A large study collection of Dutch and English delftware fragments, 17th and 18th centuries, including a number of charger centres decorated in blue and in polychrome enamels with tulips, pomegranates, animals, flowers and geometric designs, some fragments of early faïence and maiolica, together with a copy of the Northern Ceramic Society Journal Volume 30, 2014, in which some of the fragments are illustrated, and two copies of the journal of the Netherlands Friends of Ceramics Association. A Savona maiolica albarello, late 17th century, the dumbbell form painted with figures walking, running and riding through a European landscape, above and below a scroll inscribed ' Conf: Hamec', the shoulder bearing the initials 'F.R', lighthouse mark, some chipping to the footrim, 20.6cm. Hamech's Confection was a purgative preparation reputedly named after an Arab physician. Among other ingredients it contained rhubarb, senna leaves, agaric and colocynth.
An Italian maiolica armorial albarello, c.1720, probably Naples, of dumbbell form, the narrow waist inscribed in blue with 'BENEDETTA. LAX', on a scroll amidst leafy branches, above a shield decorated in polychrome enamels, containing a tree and the initials 'D I', a repaired rim chip, 20cm. Benedicta (Benedetta) laxativa is a laxative electuary made from turpeth root and other ingredients.
A Montelupo maiolica albarello, c.1550-80, painted in blue, green, yellow and ochre, with St Paul within a leaf and flower garland above a banner inscribed 'Si: Acetoso', the interior with a buff lead glaze, 17.4cm. This jar would have contained dried sorrel, which had a variety of uses including reducing swelling, treating bacterial infections and as a diuretic.
An Italian maiolica syrup or wet drug jar, c.1700, the ovoid body titled 'UNG to BASILICO' in manganese on a blue band beneath a small landscape panel, within a large bead border in shades of blue, yellow, ochre and manganese, applied to the reverse with a double strap coiled handle, some glaze wear and chipping, 21cm.

The original plaster for one of the figures, and design drawings for the stove, are in the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv. no. 4029-1853). Alfred Stevens, active as a sculptor, designer, and painter, rejected traditional distinctions between fine art and design. As chief designer for Hoole & Co., he produced award-winning designs for metalwork, maiolica, terracotta ornaments and chimneypieces. Decorations for the dining-room at Dorchester House, London, and the monument to the Duke of Wellington for St Paul's Cathedral, London are amongst his most celebrated works.

Italian maiolica charger, Aiuto Morroni, (1879-1954), Gualdo Tadino (Umbria), decorated in blue and gilt lustre with a scene from 'Muzio Scevola' within Renaissance style border of mythical beasts, inscibed verso 'Muzio Scevola, A. Morroni, Gualdo Tadino', 43cm diameterMuzeo Scevola is an early 18th Century three-part work composed in London by Amadei, Bononcini and George Frideric Handel, circa 1720. The young Roman soldier Muzio disguises himself as an Etruscan to assassinate King Porsena. When the King makes a speech to his troops, Muzio kills another man in error. Muzio is held but proudly proclaims that he is as ready to die and, to demonstrate this, thrusts his right hand into the fire, hence "Scevola" (left-handed). Porsena recognises his bravery and releases him.Condition report: Crack at 7 o'clock noticeable mainly to reverse
