Guillaume Coustou the Elder (1677 - 1746) was a French sculptor known for his work in the Baroque and Louis XIV styles. He served as a royal sculptor for both Louis XIV and Louis XV. In 1735, he became the Director of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. His most famous works are the monumental Carrara marble statues of horses created for the Chateau de Marly, which now have replicas standing in the Place de la Concorde in Paris. These Marly Horses reinvent the theme of the colossal Roman marbles of the Horse Tamers in Rome's Piazza Quirinale. Commissioned by Louis XV in 1739, they were installed at Marly in 1745 and later moved to the Place de la Concorde after the French Revolution. This mantle clock is an inspired by the statues, in an empire-style clock, decorated with bronze and gilded figure of a young man taming horses. Weight: 17 lbs. CYCLADIC IDOL HEAD CYCLADES, EARLY CYCLADIC II, C. 2600 - 2400 B.C. carved marble, the head upon a broad cylindrical neck, the smooth facial plane with a convex form, bending back as if gazing upwards, with gently rounded chin and central rectangular nose, raised on a bespoke mount 7.1cm tall Provenance:  From an old French private collection of M. M. Accompanied by a French antiquities passport.  Note: The Cyclades, an archipelago in the southwestern Aegean, comprises thirty-nine small islands and many more islets. In ancient Greek they were referred to as the kyklades, envisioned as a circle (kuklos) around the sacred island of Delos, home to the most sacred temple of Apollo. In the fourth millennium B.C. a distinctive culture emerged in the islands which ran for over two thousand years. Sitting at a favourable location in the Aegean sea and rich in mineral resources, in particular iron ores and copper, the inhabitants of the Cyclades benefitted from the trade in these raw materials at a time when metallurgy was developing rapidly across the Mediterranean. Existing largely tangentially with the great civilisations of the Minoans and Mycenaeans, Cycladic people are counted among the three major Aegean cultures. It was the Cycladic people who produced the very first masterpieces of Greek marble sculpture. “Idols” such as the present example were spread throughout the archipelago, with the tradition of carving such figures lasting for well over one thousand years. Their exact use is unclear, some resemble fertility figures encountered across the Near East. Others have been interpreted as images of the deceased or servants for the afterlife. It is clear however that they were used in both funerary contexts and day-to-day ritual life, as some have been found with ancient repairs.Though they are today notable for their minimalist appearance, scientific analysis has shown that the surface of the marble would originally have been painted with mineral-based pigments, azurite for blue and iron ores or cinnabar for red. Many of the figures show a remarkable similarity in their proportions, suggesting that the production of these idols was regulated using a type of early compass. The sense of abstraction offered by ancient Cycladic art stimulated many of the great twentieth century artists, including Brancusi, Modigliani, and Picasso. The present piece is a wonderful example of the type, though carved over four thousand years ago its geometric appeal remains distinctly modern.

A Parian ware figure attributed to Minton, late 19th century, depicting two post-mortem sleeping/dead children lying on a bed, based on a marble sculpture by Sir Francis Chantrey (1781-1841), impressed marks, 13cm wide 23cm deep 11cm high Considered to be one of Chantrey's finest pieces, the original Sleeping Children statue can be found in Lichfield Cathedral. It was commissioned by Ellen Jane Robinson, the mother of Ellen Jane and Marianne who died in 1813 and 1814 respectively, and depicts the two girls lying asleep on a bed in each other's arms. The tragic story behind the scene began when the children's father, Rev William Robinson of Lichfield, contracted tuberculosis and died. Shortly after, whilst Ellen Jane and her two daughters were on a trip to Bath, her eldest daughter's nightdress caught fire as she prepared for bed, and she was fatally burned. Just the following year, whilst in London, the youngest daughter, Marianne, became very ill and also died. Within just three years, Ellen Jane had lost her entire family and, terribly bereaved, she contacted Chantrey to secure the likeness of her children. Universally admired, it is considered to be one of the greatest works of English sculpture from the period, and was so popular on completion that it was reported that 'there was no getting near them; mothers, with tears in their eyes, lingered, and went away, and returned', and small replicas of it were sold.
