In 1998 she decided to become a full time contemporary artist. Judith Gardner was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 2000 and of the Small Paintings Group in 2003. Judith Gardner is quoted as saying 'My painting is representational to a certain extent. It begins with an idea based on strong observation. Once the composition has been decided upon, the reality to a point is not so necessary for me to develop the painting. This enables me to create light and atmosphere with tone, colour and brushwork'. Judith Gardner paintings are regularly exhibited at The Royal Academy of Art Summer Exhibition (London), the RBA, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, New English Art Club Exhibitions, British Painters Exhibition, Pastel Society and The Royal Society of Marine Artists. Judith Gardner has been awarded numerous contemporary art awards the most significant being The Italia Prize and the De Laszlo Art Medal at the Royal Society of British Artists 2003 Exhibition. * DAVID TONER (SCOTTISH B. 1944), THE HOUSE AT MIRLEES DRIVE mixed media on paper, signed and dated '85 43cm x 61cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Provenance: The late Helen E.C. Cargill Thompson. Note: Dr Helen E C Cargill Thompson (1933 - 2020) has been recognised for her contribution to both librarianship and the art world. Born in Burma in 1933, on the outbreak of World War II she returned to Glasgow to live with her grandparents in Mirrlees Drive, close to Glasgow Botanic Gardens. Her great grand-uncle was a founder of Burmah Oil Company. Her love of art developed in the city’s Kelvingrove Galleries. Dr Cargill Thompson was educated at Cheltenham Ladies College and then read Physiology and Pharmacology at St Andrews University. She went on to do a PhD at Edinburgh University which was research into the contraceptive pill. In 1970, Dr Cargill Thompson began work at the Andersonian Library at Strathclyde University, being appointed as the Head of the library’s new Reference and Information Division in 1982. Close to retirement in 1999, she was awarded the Princess Royal Medal for services to the discipline. Dr Cargill Thompson’s collecting and patronage was in the family tradition. A well-known character in the West of Scotland, especially at exhibition openings and private views. She lived frugally using public transport around the city and never viewed her passion for collecting art as a monetary investment. Dr Cargill Thompson was a truly public-spirited Glaswegian and throughout her time at Strathclyde University she supported the Collins Gallery (closed 2013) and in 1999 she gifted a substantial part of her collection of contemporary art to the University and a portion of her contemporary silver collection to The Glasgow School of Art.
* CONSTANTIN KLUGE (RUSSIAN/FRENCH 1912 - 2003), BORDS DE SEINE ENNEIGÉS À RUEIL (SNOWY DAY ON THE RIVER SEINE AT RUEIL, PARIS) oil on canvas, signed 51cm x 61cm Framed. Note: Constantin Kluge was a Russian-born French painter best known for his naturalistic scenes of Paris and French countryside in a style reminiscent of Albert Marquet. Kluge was born to a wealthy military family on January 29, 1912 in Riga, Latvia, which was then a large, industrial Russian port city. He spent much of his childhood and young adult life between Manchuria, Beijing, and Hong Kong, where he discovered a love for brush and ink painting. Kluge studied architecture at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris and earned his diploma in 1937. Upon graduating, he painted the city’s river banks and streets before returning to Shanghai. With the rise of Communism in China, the artist fled to Paris in 1950 and began exhibiting in the French Salons. He was a success both artistically and financially. Of his many awards, he received the Gold Medal, Salon des Artistes Francais and was made Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur by the French Government. He died on January 9, 2003 in Paris, France. Kluge’s works are in the collections of the Musée d’Orsay and the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris, among many others. Our only recent example of Constantin Kluge's work was "Notre Dame, Paris" from the same private collection, which sold for £4200 (hammer), Lot 547 (The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction, 26th May 2019).
* GORDON H WYLLIE RSW DA (SCOTTISH 1930 - 2005), AUTUMN MOON gouache on paper, signed and dated '82, titled label verso 11.5cm x 16cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Handwritten label verso. Note: Gordon Wyllie was born in Greenock and in 1949 was accepted to study at the Glasgow School of Art. Under the tutelage of such luminaries as Edward Odling and Mary and Willie Armour, Gordon distinguished himself, graduating in 1953 after an eminent final year. He was awarded the post-diploma, or Master's course, won the Scottish Academy Award and also the Newbery Medal, the school's most prestigious prize. This was all the more remarkable considering that Gordon had, in his diploma year, returned home to care for his father, whose seriously deteriorating health ended in death two months before the degree show, and Gordon himself had suffered a bout of pneumonia. With a scholarship award, he studied that summer at Hospitalfield, Arbroath, as a post-graduate under Ian Fleming. Fleming inspired Gordon and encouraged him in abstraction, with which he occupied himself for the next few years. Meanwhile, he trained at Jordanhill College of Education in Glasgow to become a teacher, in the vanguard of the resurgence of art teaching in Scottish schools by the new art masters, undoubtedly because they painted actively while teaching full-time. Passionate about art education, he was instrumental in influencing many students to pursue a career in the creative industry. A former pupil aptly described his classroom as a "guided exploration rather than a formal lesson". His love of the Scottish countryside is mirrored in his work and undoubtedly stemmed from the bank of images he built when, as a youngster, he travelled with his parents around the country. Argyll and the Western Isles were his favourite destinations, where he was fascinated by the crofts and farms sprouting from the land. Small houses typified his landscapes and still-lifes included abstracted landscapes; flowers, particularly poppies, fruit and fish feature in his later output. In 1996, he was awarded the Alexander Graham Munro Prize at the RSW exhibition in Edinburgh. His work featured regularly in one-man and combined shows and at his last one-man show in London in 2003, demand for his paintings remained high, as it has done ever since. In the last couple of years auction prices, in Glasgow and elsewhere, have shown a significant surge, reflecting the increasing collector interest in Gordon Wyllie's work. His auction record price has been beaten on regular occasions and currently stands at £2400 (hammer) established in October 2020.
* ADRIAN WISZNIEWSKI RSA HonFRIAS HRSW (SCOTTISH b 1958 - ), TUBER-BABES oil on canvas, signed and dated 2008 214cm x 183cm Unframed (as intended). Provenance: Acquired for a noted private London collection from The Lemon Street Gallery, Truro, Cornwall in 2008. A handwritten letter dated 10.11.08 by Wiszniewski to the owner accompanies this lot. Wiszniewski states: "I am really pleased that Tuber-babes has found its way into your collection. I began painting Tuber-babes in 2005, worked on it over a six-month period into 2006 and then left it until the beginning of 2008 when it was completed. The painting (process) can be a long one and I spend that time developing the subject matter - drawing and re-drawing. I was intrigued to see where the painting story might take me. What would be the pivotal point. The point of the painting Tuber-babes balances on the relationship of two worlds - the rural (earthiness) and the urban (urbane). The rural world is populated by the Tuber-babes, their children are of the earth and of nature and are linked umbilically with it. They are however dominated by the more sophisticated and elevated who look down on the Tuber-babes as curios. They survey them with a superior air in the way that ancient gods might from their mountain top. They smile and toy with their 'playthings' and use a pointer as an educational prop. The Tuber-babes, however, like all other 'vegetables' that populate the canvas have an energy and an unflappable life-force - a fact that might prove dangerous if it were denied. This point is underpinned by the view from the window; a garden recedes into farmland and to a horizon where the twin Trade Towers stand distant and aloof. Yours Adrian Wiszniewski". Note: Adrian Wiszniewski creates work characterised by a strong drawing element and fertile imagination. Populated with contemplative figures set in vividly coloured Arcadian landscapes, his paintings are rich with symbolic, political and philosophical depths. Adrian Wiszniewski (pronounced Vishnevski) was born in Glasgow in 1958 and studied architecture at The Mackintosh School of Architecture in Glasgow 1975–79; then trained at Glasgow School of Art, 1979–83. Wiszniewski is one of the leading members of the New Glasgow Boys responsible for the revival and resurgence of figurative painting under the tutelage of Sandy Moffat OBE; a group of artists that included Steven Campbell, Ken Currie and Peter Howson. His multiple awards include the Haldane Trust Award in 1982, the David Cargill Scholarship in 1983, the Mark Rothko Memorial Award in 1984, the I.C.C.F. Best Design Award New York in 1993 and the Lord Provost Gold Medal from City of Glasgow in 1999. His work can be found in many international public collections including The Gallery of Modern Art in New York, The Metropolitan Museum, New York, The Setagaya Museum, Tokyo, Japan, The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, Tate Britain, London and The Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Wiszniewski has had numerous major solo exhibitions over many years including in London, Sydney, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Ghent and Tokyo.
