A heavy quality Arts & Crafts style silver coloured casket, prominent strap hinges to sloping lid inset with QSA medal and clasp (illegible), front panel later engraved in stylized capitals “William Frederick Adams Imperial Light Horse”, on 4 ball feet, 5¼” x 3¼” x 2¼” (max), hammered finish, polished overall. GC Note: Adams was k.i.a., Defence of Ladysmith, 7th Jan 1900.
Four: DCM, Geo V field marshal type (93000 Pte W. Sidell 6/Tank Corps), BWM, Victory, WWII War Medal (last unnamed as issued), GVF or better, loosely framed with a brown, red, green regimental coloured lanyard and accompanied by a separately framed testimonial named to Pte Walter Sidell for his “pluck and soldierly conduct in action ... near Vaux (sic) Vraucourt on 1st September 1918” signed by General Elles Commanding Tank Corps. Note: D.C.M. London Gazette 15 November 1918, citation reads “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. His tank became detached in the enemy front line and was hit by a shell, which set it on fire and wounded an officer and two men. He first dressed the wounds of one of the men, and with the officer’s assistance carried him to safety. He then returned to the other man and dragged him back across the open a distance of 400 yards to our line, taking two hours to accomplish this, owing to intense fire from three sides. He undoubtedly saved the man’s life by his courage and determination.” Vaulx Vraucourt (Pas de Calais, France) was taken in 1917, following severe fighting, it was lost in 1918 before being retaken in September 1918.

A 1939 Knight’s Cross with oak leaves, being an unmarked nickel silver example with iron centre, the silver oak leaves bearing a small “900” silver mark. GC (needs cleaning, the oak leaves tarnished, the cross would originally have been silver plated). Vendor states that the medal was given to a young girl, Coleen, by a German airman who baled out of his stricken aircraft over Woodnesborough in Kent after a raid on Canterbury. The story was related by Coleen to the vendor, her neighbour for many years, the medal being given to him on Coleen’s death by her husband, who died earlier this year. Accompanying the medal is a postcard sized photograph of Coleen as a very young child. Plate 5
A splendid 9 ct gold and enamelled medallion - The Sunderland & District Butcher's Association, measuring 7.5 cm x 6.5 cm, weighing 68 grams gross, on blue ribbon necklace, in fitted presentation box. This medal was presented to John Smith Pickering, president of The Sunderland & District Butcher's Association in the 1930's.
