AN UNUSUAL LIGHTWEIGHT CASED 16-BORE DOUBLE-BARRELLED PERCUSSION SPORTING GUN BY CHARLES LANCASTER, 151 New Bond St., London, serial no. 3146, circa 1858, with 27in. rebrowned twist sighted barrels signed in full on the rib, scroll engraved patent breeches each with inlaid platinum line and pierced platinum plug, scroll engraved long tang and signed back-action locks, figured walnut pistolgrip half-stock with no provision for a ramrod, chequered grip and fore-end, and engraved iron mounts including trigger-plate with pineapple finial and trigger-guard decorated with two pointers, London proof marks, weight 6lbs, in original lined and fitted brass-cornered oak case with some accessories including white metal Sykes cap dispenser, two-piece ebony ramrod with worm, and leather belt frog for the ramrod, the lid with trade label (stained), the exterior circular brass escutcheon and flush-fitting carrying handle, the latter engraved with the name 'W.E. Warrand', with leather outer marked 'Capt. Warrand. Engineers'. Footnote: The present Lot was built for the vendor's great grandfather, Major General Warrand of the Royal Engineers. William Edmund Warrand was commissioned into the Royal Engineers on 8th June 1849 as a 2nd Lieutenant, retiring with the rank of Major General on 22nd August 1883 after 34 years service. He saw active service during the Indian Mutiny with the Bengal Sappers who were to play a key part in the storming of Delhi on the 14th September 1857. Shortly after sunrise that morning the Sappers advanced from Ludlow Castle in the face of heavy enemy fire, crossed a bridge that had been almost totally destroyed, lodged bags of gunpowder against the right leaf of the Kashmiri Gate into the city and blew it open giving access for the main assault column lead by Nicholson. It was at Delhi that Warrand lost his arm. By the end of the Mutiny he had risen to the rank of 2nd Captain. It is believed that he used this gun in India as well as at home in Nottinghamshire.

U.S.A.', case-hardened hammer and rammer, walnut butt and fore-end (small crack), the latter with brass fitting for the front sling mount, iron butt-plate, brass trigger-guard numbered '6581', iron sling mounts, white metal fore-end cap and barrel-bolt escutcheons, brass-mounted clearing rod, and much original blued finish (the barrel with two patches of pitting).

AN EXCEPTIONAL GERMAN 32-BORE PERCUSSION TARGET RIFLE BY REHBICHLER IN MUNCHEN, BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN MADE FOR KING LUDWIG II OF BAVARIA (1845-1886), with heavy 31in. octagonal barrel rifled with seven grooves, the exterior decorated in low relief flower-heads and scrollwork against a ground of engraved lines, two silver inlaid bands at the muzzle, silver inlaid signature and serpent towards the breech, and applied silver chamois at the breech, engraved rear-sight set half way down the barrel, finely scroll engraved symmetrical breech with inlaid with one silver and two gold lines, finely scroll engraved tang, lock and symmetrical side-plate, the tang decorated with scrollwork inhabited by a goddess and two putti, the lock signed 'REHBICHER' in gold and decorated with an owl and with a scene on the tail involving a lion attacking a mythical beast with a palm tree and two pyramids in the background, the hammer engraved with scrollwork inhabited by a goddess, the hammer nose in the form of a lion's head, and side-plate signed 'IN MUNCHEN' in gold and decorated with an eagle and with a neo-classical scene on the tail with armed putti in a tented camp besieging a castle, set trigger (mechanism defective), highly figured walnut half-stock with raised cheek-piece, and chequered grip and fore-end, the butt carved in relief behind the cheek-piece with a classical warrior seated in front of a trophy of arms, engraved iron mounts heightened with inlaid silver decoration including shaped blued trigger-guard, white metal barrel-bolt escutcheons each in the form of an owl, and original bone-tipped ramrod, with original brown leather slip. Footnote: Ludwig II of Bavaria was an eccentric and extravagant ruler.
