λ Sir Thomas Lawrence PRA, FRS (1769-1830)Miniature of Venus and Cupid in a landscapeOval, in a gilt metal frame, the reverse with a glazed aperture revealing a lock of hair, believed to be that of the artist53 x 32mmProvenance:Given by the artist to Mary Hamilton (d.1837), wife of William Hamilton RA, later Mary Denham;By descent to Mrs Charles Beetham, née Copeman;By descent to her niece, Mrs Arthur Beetham (d.1889);By descent to her son, Dr Frederick Beetham;By descent to the previous owner;By whom sold, Lawrence's, Crewkerne, 9 October 2012 lot 849, where purchased by the present private collectorSir Thomas Lawrence was a close friend of fellow artist William Hamilton, his wife Mary, and their son Henry Thomas. He is recorded as having spent some of the 'happiest days of his life' with the Hamiltons, and one of his most spectacular drawings is a portrait of Mary, now in the British Museum (no.2005,0731.8). William Hamilton died in 1801 but Lawrence remained close to Mary and the young Henry, and gave the present miniature to Mary. Lawrence also depicted Henry, who was a keen budding artist, in an exquisite drawing executed c.1804-05, recently with Lowell Libson & Jonny Yarker Ltd, London. In this drawing Henry is shown with a locket or miniature hanging around his neck, and it seems plausible that this is in fact the present miniature. An old label reads By Sir Thomas Lawrence/P.R.A. 1769-1830. He gave/this miniature to Mrs. Hamilton,/wife of his friend William/Hamilton R.A. who died/in 1801. Mrs H. left it in/her will to Mrs. Charles/Beetham nee Copeman/who left/to Mrs. Arthur/Beetham nee/Copeman, her/niece, who died/1889. Afterwards/it came into my/possession -/Frederick Beetham/her eldest son.

Lot 8

λ Circle of Thomas Le Hardy Portrait miniature of a lady, possibly Frances 'Fanny' Kemble, later Mrs Twiss (1759-1827), wearing a white dress and bandeau in powdered hairIndistinctly signed (lower right)Oval, in a rectangular ebonised frame80 x 66mmTwo further variations of this portrait are known which have previously been linked to Richard Cosway. One of these was inscribed on the frame Miss Kemble, afterwards Mrs Butler. This refers to Fanny Kemble (1809-1893), the famous 19th-century actress painted by, amongst others, Sir Thomas Lawrence. However, the costume of our sitter makes this identification implausible, and instead it is much more likely that the sitter is another Fanny Kemble, later Mrs Twiss, who was also an actress.
