S. MARKS/ 1867Dimensions:10.8cm x 75.8cmNote: Note: Influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, Henry Stacy Marks trained at the Royal Academy in 1851 before studying in Paris the following year. In the 1860s he undertook work for William Burges, Minton, stained glass manufacturers Clayton & Bell and the artist Lawrence Alma Tadema. During this time, he was also approached by the Gaiety Theatre in London to produce a frieze for the Proscenium Arch. From the late 1860s, the venue played an essential role in the development of modern musical comedy, and Mark’s playful and charming compositions were a setting for spectators to marvel at.
Robert Frame, Scottish c.1922-1989 - Landscape in yellow; oil on board, 24 x 51 cm (ARR) Provenance: the Estate of the Artist; private collection Note: Scottish artist Robert Frame, studied in Jankel Adler's studio in Glasgow together with his friends Robert Colquhoun, Rober MacBryde and Benjamin Creme. Another friend was W.S. Graham, and in 1942, Frame and Creme each produced drawings for Graham's first book 'Cage Without Grievance' published by David Archer's Parton Press. Frame moved to London in the mid-1940s with Colquhoun and MacBryde. In London, he was part of the circle around John Minton, becoming close to Minton for a time and was friendly with Prunella Clough. In the early 1950s, Frame exhibited with the St. George's Gallery in London, and also became involved with theatre. In the 1960s, Frame produced illustrations for several books for Ian Hamilton Finlay's Wild Hawthorn Press. The British Museum acquired a collection of Frame's drawings and monotypes by the artist in the 1980s. Please refer to department for condition report
Fred Uhlman, German/British 1901-1985 - Welsh Landscape no.1; ink on paper, 24.6 x 34.6 cm (ARR) Provenance: with Piccadilly Gallery, London (according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame); The Hon. (?) Makins, purchased from the above on 8th September 1967; private collection Note: Uhlman's depictions of the Welsh landscape are amongst the most important and celebrated of the artists career. Uhlman first visited Northern Wales in the 1940s as a refuge from the ongoing. He and his family would return repeatedly, eventually acquiring a holiday home in Croesor Valley. Like his fellow emigre Josef Herman, Wales was to have a major impact on his art and his reputation in Britain, and Uhlman embraced the isolation of the landscape, creating mystical images, such as the present work. Uhlman's Welsh works were first shown in 1942 at the Leicester Galleries, London. This created a link in his work with the burgeoning Neo-Romantic artists in London, such as Graham Sutherland and John Minton, as well as with his fellow-German, the 19th-century Romantic master, Caspar David Friedrich.
